Episode #14 of the "Fall Railfanning Series".
I headed up to Springfield, MA for the first time to spend an afternoon of railfanning. Despite the tempatures hovering around freezing and a steady wind all afternoon, I was able to catch two shuttles, the westbound Lake Shore Limited, and the Vermonters passing each other. The station in Springfield is a run-down old piece of metal that is in a desperate need of resteration. CSX did not make an apperence this afternoon.

WOW!! Here's a service that cries out for the RDC's or (if they had been reliable) the SPV-2000's.
there's more to the Lakeshore. another part of that train starts from NYP. they join/split in Albany NY.
@BosworthJ I uploaded the video the night I came back, so I filmed the trains on Saturday December 17th.
Yes I expecting some Amtrak Employee to at least ask me what I was doing, but they didn't seem to mind me. I hate people who call themselves "Americans" but don't even know our consitution.
Thanks for watching and I encourage you to subscribe!
Awesome!!
Yes the springfield station is very run down. Not the best spot to railfan if youre looking for csx either head out to west springfield yard and the B&A springfield/selkirk line to catch some csx action. nice video!
@Thunderheadpros Of all the times I've seen the Lake Shore Limited at that station, I haven't seem to have a problem because I film at New Haven and alot of people know me there, including the Amtrak police so I haven't been questioned in Springfield as of yet.
Nice video! What time did you stay until? a Pan Am train came through around 4:00.
Hey me and my son went recording at Berlin Amtrak and guess what, WE DIDN'T GET CAUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People film in Kingston RI all the time and no one says anything!!!!!!!!!!
@trains0509 Wow, now body said a word to me, and the engineers were very nice to me. Stupid Amtrak Employees
What exactly are the shuttles' purpose?

Boy, train buffs like you are certainly ill-informed as to what Amtrak operates. The 400 series trains exist to connect Springfield and Hartford CT with the Northeast Corridor at New Haven. This is a continuation of the New Haven Railroad's long-lived operation. Amtrak also runs a SPG-WAS through train. With the rehabilitation of the ex-B & M to Greenfield and Brattleboro, new train service will be added, as well as a rerouting of the Vermonter. Also, the old Union Station building is in the middle of restoration as well.
I do suggest that you contact the rail advocacy groups for more accurate information on what Amtrak is doing, rather than relying on the "foamer net".
I suspect it's to placate politicians who approve money to keep AMTRAK afloat. Were it not for that, the only service would be in the NE Corridor (Boston-NYC-DC), Empire Service (Albany-NYC) and maybe some of the other short-distance operations that do make a dime.
Rail advocacy groups are why this service and AMTRAK's long distance trains are still running. They funnel money to the DC crowd that votes on the AMTRAK budget. In reality, the NEC and Empire Corridor turn a small profit; I'm not sure about some of the other "Corridors". The rest of AMTRAK is a money-losing swamp supported by the taxpayers.
Wanna come Railfanning with us and Brendan too?
Those Amtrak guys aren't very good about showing the difference between the front and rear of their trains. Marker lights on the front of 57....DUH!!!
