  • Drag racing is supposed to be fun. Being that drag racing is such a difficult sport to be successful, the element of fun sometimes gets lost. Even on the worst days, having the right attitude and mindset will help you find the joy in racing and often lead to the winners circle.
In this quick video, Tim outlines why having the right attitude is vital to the success of your racing program along with common pitfalls and how to mitigate them.

I recently returned to owning and driving my own car after crewing on friends cars for the last 20yrs. I came back and said "I am only racing for the fun of it, I'm not going to kill myself, working myself to death just to go racing. I'm not going racing if it's 100 degrees out. If I break the car at the track, and it's not an easy fix, I'll load it up and fix it at home. And I only go racing with close friends."

Hi Tim, I had the toughest 1971 Ford Falcon in Australia it was called the GMHETA I had a crew chief for years that took all the credit for my hard work told everyone he built my engines fffff.
Used my car as a logo at his shop stole my ideas & registered them within days of telling him what my next plan was, constantly put me down with rumours he created to keep everyone away from me & built a wall around me of haters for which I never new for years, cheated on his wife using me as a scape goat.
It has taken me decades to clear my name, he went broke & builds engines in his back shed apparently a guru!
He road my coat tails for years & now I’m about to go racing again guess who popped his head up!
    Gotta watch these guys!
I’ll do fine without his help.
But crew chiefs are a bunch glory hunters in a lot of cases, I’d rather pay & get a real guy to help with a contract any day. Thanks I’ve always wanted to tell this story I’ve kept it to myself for decades.
Love your vids. I hope this gives someone a laugh. Shame it’s all true.

When I started road racing, I had a well prepped , competitive car that was in the top 1/4 to 1/2 of the field right from the start. This was against drivers that had many years more experience so I took this as a win. Had I raced longer I would have inched up the field.
When I went oval track racing in an entry level class, this was play time as I knew the car was not really up to the task. But hey, I wanted to try oval track and had spent about zero money getting the car on the track

Excellect & timely topic Mr. McAmis. Definatly words to race by...but also words to live by 👍. I'm approaching 64 years on the planet...and still...the sound of a fuel motor gets me going...and has done so, since 1964. Life is a series of challenges, requiring one to adapt. But it's how you perceive those challenges, that is key. Are you a victim? Or survivor? Are you a thankful person, or a jealous one? Glass 1/2 full, or 1/2 empty? One's attitude....effects ALL these perceptions. (PS...have had my DL 48 years...and been drag racing every one of them, thankfully ✌😎)

Absolutely! I am in public sector Civil Engineering and the mantra around our offices is that when we break it all down, only two things are under our complete control; they are our attitude & our work ethic. In addition to that, I've always claimed the with any given problem, 10% of that problem is the problem itself & the other 90% has to do with our reaction to the problem. Great advice, Mr. McAmis! We could never learn too much about having the proper attitude. It won't prevent us from experiencing issues but will enable us to handle them better.👍🏼

I just want to say that I met Tim decades ago when he was building a chassis for a good friend of mine that I helped him with his program as a 20 something tech and I was absolutely impressed by him, my first racing tee was a Tim McAmis shirt I wore forever, I was impressed by his same no nonsense blunt approach to telling you how it was or how it needed to be and there was no arguing about how the car would be set up if he was doing it. Those interactions stuck with me and helped me to expect more of myself and the things I touched on the race car, Tim I think it’s amazing that you are taking the time at this point in your career to share your knowledge about what took you a lot of hard work and decades to learn so that others can use it in the future, we’re only around so long and I think when someone is able to do this with a trade they have mastered it should be recognized , thank you sir for all you do.

For a while I ran entry level oval track at Bugtussle Speedway located in Podunk USA. I've witnessed those that were fixated on winning even though the car was ill prepared and the driver was not much better. Fix the car / fix the driver don't continue to throw tools and break stuff because things didn't go your way.
In my case, I had done well in road racing and oval track was play time in a cheap car that I knew was not really up to the task.

I think about the seven P's. Piss Poor Preparation Perpetuates Piss Poor Performance. I'm not in racing but build thermoforming machines and build auto's on the side. People who are not prepared have the hardest time at anything. You like me lay out the truth without the kid gloves but as you surly understand, always have the right attitude and you can accomplish anything.

Great video Tim, way too often people do things and let the fun slip away so unless you're killing it winning gobs of money despite your attitude it is a must to figure out how to be racing for yourself, it starts with being honest with yourself and "why" you are doing it. We've all seen those racers that show up looking for affirmation but lose the plot about the fun for self satisfaction, just look at the difference between those teams that are glad to qualify vs those that think they deserve to qualify, it speaks directly of their ability to accept the reality of the sport.

OK I just fired myself. Just kidding I'm getting older and don't win as often as I used to but guess what I'm happy as F, when I get out of the car win or lose. I am a one man operation and no matter what, I'm the only one to blame. Either car malfunction or driver head space and timing it's all on me. I have a great time at the track and could give one shit less. Now don't get me wrong, I want to win and I expect to do just that every weekend. The only problem is I look around to find out who to fire and the only one is me.

Other races the 'weather' was beautiful, but all it takes is one or two people to set the mood for the whole pit area.

  • @hughobrien4139

I’ve been on both sides of that fence. Good leadership will most often dictate the attitude of the team.
As a team leader it should go further than just “the guy with the attitude.”
We’ve all worked with “that guy” the one who knows exactly what he’s doing but you just never see him doing any of it. He’s got a great attitude just doesn’t work efficiently.
You can’t walk passed that guy while he’s bullshitting around and ask someone else who is currently working on something to drop what they’re doing and handle it.
That will kill a good attitude quick.
I have to work on my attitude and so does every single person on this planet.
I admire the true leaders in this world. The men and women who can put a person in over their head and encourage success out of them. That’s the true skill in life. Evasive for myself but I do recognize that this is the goal I’m working towards.

Part of the " pissed off racer" is an attempt to intimidate other racers by building a reputation. This seems to be more prevalent in oval track racing and somewhat road racing where in both cases, cars interact with each other more than in drag racing.

I asked the guys to stick with me (Crew chief) for the season because they were not having fun and the driver was a dick. We finished the season fifth in points and crew members found new teams for the following season. The crew had a great attitude once we started having fun and everyone noticed. Having fun was the key to success that season for the crew. The driver had a tough few seasons because of his attitude.

@@jimw9174 I just looked, the vids he did are for carbon body however I'd expect some of this to be the same / similar as a steel body. ( see titles below, search for them on YT ) While I haven't hung a body, there are some things I'd do.
Look towards the oval track and road race guys for info on hanging a body. 5 Star is one body maker I've heard of but there are others.
After a trial fit, roll the car outside and site down the body lines. I've put things together and once they are out in the sun, things look differently.
Do you have access to a complete stock bodied car to pull measurements from? I know someone that put a tube frame road race 90 Camaro together in 95. Their number one comment was " you think you know what a Camaro looks like but you really don't "
For body support tubes, I'd make some temporary extendable tubes in order to gauge length then replace them one by one with cut to length tubes.
