Gotta admit I didn't know any of those games and yet watching this list felt strangely familiar. In my almost 40 years of gaming I've never experienced such a generation as the era of the original PlayStation where so many whacky and creative concepts made it into actually functional and playable games. I myself played countless games that most likely nobody heard about and love them so much. As much as I still enjoy playing modern games, that past era is definitely something very special to me.

Unholy War, was that the one that had the add with a blue'ish creature on it that look like a cross between a Zergling from StarCraft and Violator from Spawn?
I think that's what it looked like anyways, it's been many years since i've actually seen it.
Another really fun game that i don't see mentioned for PS1 is Silent Bomber, the gameplay of dashing around setting or stacking then exploding bombs as fast as your fingers can tap was soo addicting. For me it's one of those games that you just never understand why something else similar hasn't been made again.

I was tempted to buy a Playstation mini because it was on there as IQ. I decided just to stick with my Switch and the dozens of games that I haven't got round to playing yet or completed. Seriously, I've had Breath of the wild for about 6 years and I've barely played it because I'm waiting till I've got nothing left in my back catalogue of games to play before I invest every single waking second of my time into it.

I never knew Toys for Bob developed The Unholy War, it just says Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos. Such a great game, mixing strategy with fighting. The fighting even had strategy in the sense each unit was strongest vs a specific unit and weak to another. Also the arenas each had advantages and disadvantages for different units. I would love a remake or a sequel, but doubt that will happen ever. Just glad I have my copy still.

mentioning Incredible Crisis and not mentioning the AMAZING soundtrack by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra? This will not stand, for penance go listen to a couple TSPO albums, they're all fantastic.
The Unholy War is definitely a great game. If you want more in that vein, the Archon games are an early version of it, on all old computer systems and the NES. The second never got an NES port, but the first was remade on the PC in 1994 and well worth checking out. Around the same time was Dark Legions on the PC, developed by Silicon Knights. I loved the whole "chess, but you actually have to fight" angle of those games, and wish they'd do an update to the concept.

*Intelligent Qube* - I remember a demo for I.Q. was a part of the first demo disc I got for the PlayStation. Being terrible at puzzle solving back then, it took a long time for me to actually beat the demo. Cut to 2014 and I finally get the full game. I’ve since beaten it multiple times and consider it a top five puzzle game on the system.
*Threads of Fate* - Damn this one hurts. Okay so, up until maybe 2-3 years ago, I thought I didn’t like any turn-based RPG not named Pokémon or Star Wars: KOTOR. I found a complete copy of Threads of Fate for $5 at a thrift store back in 2012 but couldn’t tell from the box whether the combat was turn-based or action. Ultimately, I decided to leave it there because I didn’t want to take the “risk” but, that very night, I looked up some gameplay, saw it was an action-RPG and realized my mistake. Next time I went to that thrift store, the game was gone. Cut to 2024. I still don’t own a copy and the disc alone goes for $35+ online. Oh and it turns out I do like turn-based RPGs, too, so yeah.
*Incredible Crisis* - Man this game is insane but in the most fun way you can imagine. From going shopping to having an affair to protecting a freaking UFO, it’s truly something else.
*The Unholy War* - This is the only game on the list that I don’t agree with. To be fair, it’s not completely the game’s fault. I knew I would have no interest in the strategy mode of the game and bought it strictly for the fighting game mode. Unfortunately, it falls short in that department, not being bad enough to call it a piece of crap but not good enough to keep coming back to. Oh well. At least there’s the Soul Reaver demo it comes with.

One game that I would consider to be a PS1 hidden gem is "Galaga: Destination Earth". Featuring not just the classic top down camera angle, but also two additional camera modes. There are unique environments, tactics, bonus stages, power ups and even objectives to complete as you fly through each level. The music is also beautifully crafted as a spacy, techno, and even orchestral pieces that make the campaign worth it. (Even cutscenes featuring our ship)
In my opinion, it is the perfect spin-off of that arcade title.

ps1 had the best library ever, it literally had a game for every genre possible, and even for games that didn't have a genre. Shame that with the ps2 all of this disappeared

I guess....but at least you could still play ps1 games on the ps2.

I loved this gaming generation, the period of Sony elbow barging into the Sega and Nintendo console war

Not sure about ps1 but...I'll give some PS2 ones I always thought were underappreciated or lesser known.
    Shadow Hearts.
RAD (Robot Alchemical Drive or some such)
    Shinobi PS2.
Of course there are plenty of others but these are 3 I always default to.

Unholy War is really cool and fun, been playing it off and on since it came out, and STILL can’t beat the second mission where the damn Prana Devils keep spawning over and over and over.

Try to use the flying bike against those creatures. I destroyed a lot of them with just one bike on the highest difficulty

Of course when it comes to PS1. They’ll always going to be hidden games that came only in Japan or just plain ignored it,and Happy Slap Rhythm Master is one of these hidden gems I’ve ever seen.
