Love the Roxy cam...so cool and funny at the same time...O' you shocked me with your new hair style...hahah....I liked it longer...but I am just a man and we men like longer hair...don't know why exactly...I so enjoyed the restaurant footage...you all are celebrities...
ALWAYS download your footage EVERY day! Kate - HAIR! I like flowing feminine locks as much as anyone. But for practicality on a BOAT? I'm sure a shorter sculpted do would look good on you and be even easier to manage. "The trip towards Cape Horn is still on." GOOD! That's the reason I initially subbed you two. And now there are more reasons. Thanks for the fun vids. Stay well, stay safe.
Love the Roxy Cam and Kate's hair, disappointed to hear about your drone, elated you are leaving the yard, heading for Punta del Estes. In the old days the Whitbread sailors all said Punta del Estes was their favorite port.
Thanks Rauf! We expected this to happen to the drone at some point, just thought it would be offshore in 25-30, not at the beach in a sunny 5 knot day :-) We are excited for Uruguay, as the Whitbread stories in the old sailing magazines planted the seed which grew into Sweet Ruca's RTW adventure!
Funny how many guys are commenting on the new hairdo, I’ll add mine. It’s cute, a younger look! Sorry about the drone but it seems to be pretty standard, most channels have lost multiple units. Curtis did a great job on the repairs please don’t bump into any more whales. I’ll stick with my rudder well protected by the full keel. Brazil looks like a blast I’m sure you were sad to leave. I am looking forward to more of your adventures! Are you headed for the South Pacific after rounding Cape Horn or working your way North along the coast? Great work. Thanks, Ben S/V DAWN
Hi Ben! Thanks for the kind words about the new hair style. :-) Our current plan is to head to the pacific, following a route similar to Slocum, Magellan, Darwin, etc. Continued South American cruising though is very enticing. Despite the dreaded paperwork, the people and cultures are wonderful and the scenery is beautiful.
Congrats on getting it all done. Glad you had a bit of time to enjoy new friends and see some of the country. Love the new hair, Kate. Ravishing as ever.....
Thanks Yvonne! We can't remember how much it cost, but we remember it was a fair price for such excellent food and a unique atmosphere! The restaurateurs were very gracious and awesome people!!! We will never forget the great time had by all that day.
Looks like you're having a blast. I guess the repair was a blessing in disguise as it have you time to really enjoy that place. And... Rest in peace valiant drone.
Looks like a very good repair job, given what you have available. Learned a lot about J boat construction (and repair) as well as what to look for when something hits your rudder. Many thanks for sharing the details. Sorry you had to stop short of Porto Bello (a port made infamous by Jimmy Buffets Cowboy in the Jungle). Been singing that song for 40 years and always wondered what it really looked like and where the sailors raise hell, night and day. Glad you were able to make the best of what came your way.
Another really good video. Very entertaining. So much adventure packed in to 22 minutes it seemed like 22 seconds. I didn't want it to end. Kate, I noticed the hair cut right off. Looks great. Makes your smile even brighter. Yall keep having fun and stay safe.
Awwww! Thanks so much!!!! We had tons more footage but some doesn't make it in the videos as we always have to figure out how we can fit it into a weeks worth of editing. :-)
Well that was a variety packed episode! You had beautiful conditions for your introduction to motorcycling, and again benefited from the friendship and kindness of so many people. Of course sharing food with strangers and learning about their connection to dishes is always a great way to make friends. Hopefully Kate will have another chance to try surfing as that looked fun. Slightly nerdish question- it looked like you’ve got an Edson quadrant?
Totally awesome episode guys. Loved all the excursions inland and especially the restaurant night out. Kinda shocked me a little with the short hair, Kate, yet all good.........and it will be easier all the way round. ✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝 👙 🌞 ✨ 💕 ✨
Well they drive on the right side of the road. If and when you get near the Oregon coast I have an extra Hog for you guys to ride around on. Sweet Boat repairs look A#1, done right. Surfing lesson was good for first lesson .. I see Captain Rick Moore of sailing sophisticated Lady was sent a waterproof drone, That would be the only type I would want on the water as it gives you quite a few second chances at recovery.
Hey David thanks for the feedback and the offer! We may have to take you up on that some day 😄 Kate lived in the PNW for three months many years ago and it is beauitful! We have tried to get a new drone shipped to South America but we couldn't get it shipped here at the time.. maybe later! Cheers and thanks for coming along!
Adorei Roxy cam! R.I.P. Drone.
Cool video! I always wondered how boat designers would deal with a lightning strike on a fibergrass boat. These copper straps explain a lot. I suppose those are connected to the mast and/or rigging all the way to a point where the current can escape to the water (= electrical ground).
Thanks jfv65! Turns out the copper has something to do with the SSB tuner as well. All of the boats metal fittings, mast, pulpits, and rigging all have grounding (bonding) wires which connect everything to the water through the propeller shaft strut.
Did someone mention BIKES? Early tomorrow morning, I'll put my brand-new electric bike on the road. I've never ridden/driven one. Shooby EXCITING!!! At 74, our daily 3-mile walk with my 7yo, 75-pound mixed breed, Skeeter, has become more and more painful, so the bike is the replacement. My boy will run alongside.
It's SO much fun. I have a trailer coming for Skeeter, but at seven, this month, he's got some old habits that aren't compatible with running alongside that we need to train out. With success, he'll be able to run, which he LOVES doing.
Hi Jeff! You're welcome!!! The drone was calibrated recently and we had just done several flights in the area, even some very long range ones (we had awesome footage of the harbor and ships). We actually sent the log files and cached video from the drones fatal flight to DJI, and they replaced the drone as they determined it was a software error....more on that in upcoming episodes, unless it hits the cutting rooms teak & holly floorboards!
Curious fact: the blue sphere on the Brazilian flag is based on an armillary sphere, a sailing device that was on the old Imperial Brazilian flag, coming from the flag of Portugal for obvious reasons ( how important sailing was on Portugal history) The stars are real stars in the Southern Hemisphere over the sky of Rio de Janeiro on the day of independence, but seen from outside (like the armillary sphere)
WOW! That is awesome Rogério! We always thought the Brazilian flag was beautiful, but never knew the background. The history is wonderful, especially for sailors, and makes the flag even more enjoyable. Thank you for this! 🇧🇷 🇺🇸 🌎
@@SailingSweetRuca Brazil independence was a little different, let's say. A little background Before becoming independent in 1822, the entire Portuguese court fled Napoleon to Brazil and Rio de Janeiro became the capital of the Portuguese Empire. Brazil became United Kingdom with Portugal, and thus ceased to be a colony around 1816... long after Napoleon had been defeated. Because the Royal Family was really liking living in Brazil. The Portuguese King was forced to return to Portugal to retain the theme but left his elder son in Brazil and advised him to declare Brazilian independence in case Portugal tried to make Brazil a colony again, because he knew otherwise Brazil would go to a war for independence, like the Spanish colonies and USA. That's what happened. Brazil became independent of Portugal but the Emperor was of the Portuguese Royal family and also heir to the Portuguese throne although the constitution forbid him of being both. Well, the point i am trying to make is that there was no big rupture like USA or Spanish colonies. The Empire of Brazil flag had the green of Bragança House, yellow of the Habsburg house (Dom Pedro I wife, queen consort, was Marie Leopoldine from Austria), coffee branches (Brasil is the largest coffee producer in the world for 200 years already), and the center of the Imperial Flag has symbols found on the Portuguese Flag. So sad about loosing the drone. It is maybe the #10 I've seen in RUclips. Have you ever thought about tying just a birtday balloon so it can float in case goes down?

Wow lots of stuff in this episode. I don't know what to comment on first... Well first of all I've got to say I hate losing a drone. The Splash Drone is a little more expensive, and bright red, but the cool thing is they are pretty much waterproof and don't sink when they fall out of the sky over water. An additional alternative to DJI, which I myself have gone this other route, I buy cheap like $50-$120 drones. There a lots of pretty decent "No name" drones out there that even support 4k at times. Don't expect much from them, but hey they are not a $900 loss, but you will continue to lose drones no matter what. I don't know anyone that uses them that hasn't lost at least one quite frankly. Anyway that is my two cents about drones. The Roxy cam was neat, and even my kitty watched it for all of two seconds(Really don't expect much from a lazy feline audience). The camera on the dog adds a little bit of flair from a little closer to the ground!!! Its too bad you two can't have a light motorcycle, e-bikes, or maybe two folding bikes. Maybe you do and I don't remember, but we have two folding bikes (Zizzo Via's)we take with us on the Catalina. Plus an electric Swagtron scooter. We'd love ebikes, but the laws where we sail the boat out of pretty much say no to anything but an actual bicycle. That's Charleston SC mind you, they kicked out all the ebike and scooter rentals. I noticed the grounding strap you two had to work with. It is pretty beefy, and you two aren't hanging out in Florida or Panama...so...it isn't as super important right now.
