  • www.mybimmerspa... I thought creating this video would help guide some of you with replacing the upper tensioner & guide on your M50tu based engine.This first part will cover the removal of the vanos, upper chain tensioner & guide. The second part will cover the installation of the upper chain guide, tensioners & vanos. It is also a great opportunity to rebuild your vanos during this time, although I did not cover the rebuild there are articles out there that cover the procedure. MyBimmerSpace

    My 6 Zylinder went down the drain beginning of last year. Oil pressure gone at times which led to engine overheating and inevitably a torn and warped cylinder head between spark plug 3 and 4. Thanks to this video I was able to completely rebuild the entire engine from separate new parts which I purchased here in Bremen at Bobrink. They really didn't think I'd make it, I suspect, but the engine has been running very smoothly now for almost 10000 km. Of course I also renewed the oil pump, crank shaft, pistons, bearings, etc. and got the automatic transmission thoroughly cleansed and flushed. Thanx a billion.

    Thanks so much for taking the time to make and post these videos. I recently replaced my head gasket on my 1995 M3 and these videos cut my time down so much and explained where the Bentley manual could not. Thanks again!!!

    Thanks for making this great tutorial. I followed it to replace my 325i cylinder head and the end result was a perfectly running engine. I'd like to add that the inverted torx bolts holding the vanos chain tensioner and the corners at the front of the head come out with a 1/4 inch 12 point socket driven by a 1/4" ratchet, as a 3/8" socket will not fit on the holes where these bolts live, has to be 1/4" drive. In my car, a 8 mm 12 point was not small enough, a 7 mm 12 point was too small, but a 1/4" 12 point socket had the grip on these bolt heads. I could not find a T8 inverted torx socket with a 1/4" drive.

    Gonzolo, it's very likely chain stretch. You can also place a ruler across the back of the cams, the ruler should sit flush to both camshaft squares dots on the back of the cam facing up. If the ruler does not sit sit flush then your cams are off. Don't worry about the cams for now just go ahead and loosen the exhaust camshaft torx bolts as if you are removing the Vanos. Once the torx bolts are lose you will be able to rotate the cams back to TDC with a wrench and put the blocks in.

    I believe the gizmo you removed from the rear of the airbox is actually the intake air temperature sensor. It doesn't "warm up the air" or the throttle body, it senses the air temp so the ECU can compensate for temperature-induced density changes.

    Thank you for showing the simple things like paper towel in areas to prevent bolts from being lost into the engine. I feel more confident about doing my 00 528. A P01523 comes up when scanning. I don't think the Vanos has ever been replaced or repaired. Question, can I just repair my Vanos by replacing yhe seals and springs? I saw the kit on Dr. Vanos site.

This is going to sound dumb but can you set the timing by turning the cams until they're at the 45 angle and dropping the blocks in? I have a 95' 325i. ill start by saying great job on the videos! very well instructed and explained. anyway, im here because when i put my motor on TDC i noticed my camshafters were not in the same position as yours... is this because maybe the timing was off a bit? i drove the car with no problems so im alittle confused. the are in the perfect position to where i cannot get the long guide bolt past the 3 bolt flange at the end of the cam. i need to take the camshafts out anyway so i can take the guide out after that, just wondering why the cams would be out of position. any input would be appreciated. mybimmerspace

Is it possible, and will it affect anything if I just simplyremove and plave the vanos?

    Awesome video, I'm using your video a guide for a head gasket job. Quick questions what do you do if you break the little fly wheel plastic plug where the locking pin goes? My cams are no where near the 45 degrees but the engine is at top dead center (the crank and the line line up and I can see cylinder #1 at the top too) is that normal chain wear causing that?

  • @bikehubjapan
    @bikehubjapan 7 лет назад

    This question might strike fear, anger, hate, and disbelief...but do you think it's possible to swap the intake cam out without the vanos removal kit, locking pin, and cam locking kit?

  • @samirhalloumsh

    How diffetent is it to lock the flywheel at the top dead center with m50 non-vanos? and is it going to be difficult by any means to remove the cams if I don't have vanos? With respect to the chain, the tensioner and the sprockets?

It is cranks to my tdc mark but the cams are facing down instead of up at 45 degree like you said. Hey hows it going. I am working on 2001 bmw 330xi dual vanos 3.0l. I am a certified Tech. I just started working for a Used Car Dealership and they had me replace the head gasket. So after drilling and inserting new threads in the block, i got the head on and tight but i am stuck at the part where i have to install the vanos shaft coupling that slides in the two exhaust and intake sprockets. I alined tdc and had special tool in for the camshafts alignment. I finally got the couplings in the exhaust and intake cam sprockets but now the cams are slightly off alignment is that normal or should the cam and crank stay in alignment when the coupling are installed. If you happen to get this and have any input please get back to me thanks.

    What keeps an engine like this in this state or clean condition (on the inside). Is it the engine oil or sommething else.
    I'a asking because in Europe, Castrol engine oil is beeing counterfited, and lower quality engine oil is sold as Castrol engine oil.
