One of my favorite examples of good lyricism.
    "Jeremy spoke in class today"...
The implication being that the gun did all the talking for him, his intent conveyed through action.
But it's not just a creative choice in metaphor, in this context is sounds like what you would hear from a traumatized witness, fumbling for a euphemism to describe what they saw without actually saying the words that may push them over the edge. People who have experienced trauma often use word choice to distance themselves from the memory, especially around the act itself. For example, "mistreated" instead of "abused", "assaulted" instead of "raped", etc.
It adds a lot to the gravity of the song. If the objective is to move people, what you say is often less important than how you say it, and that is especially true in song.

The look on your face at the end of the video, when you realize the final subject matter, was exactly how the entire world reacted to that video, when it was first released. One of the most powerful statements in the last 30 years of music history. Not just the lyrical content, but the imagery of the video that went along with the song. Pretty much complete genius.

It did evolve to focus more on negative information because it was important to know if something bad and dangerous happened in the vicinity of its living area as soon as possible. Like wild animal attack or pathogens in the water...
The media uses that affinity to feed us mostly with negative information, but the problem is we now get them from all around the world and it's depressing and hard to handle that overload

A little more background on Pearl Jam. They were formed shortly after Andrew Wood; from the Seattle band Mother Love Bone passed away. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament; who were members of MLB, wanted to carry on after Wood's passing. Long story short, Pearl Jam was formed about a year after this.
I live near Seattle and was fortunate to see all of the music that was happening at the time.

One thing I'm not sure if you noticed is as the song goes on everyone slowly stops playing that major 1 chord when they hit it (it becomes an A power chord) and near the graphic part at the end the vocals are singing B-C natural instead of C#. It really changes the feel of the song.

Back in the days MTV only showed a somewhat softer version of the video with an altered ending. You didn't block it, you simply didn't see it. Sometimes they showed an earlier clip with a mock live performance. Glimpses of it are used for this video, too.

This is 100% correct. I must have watched the music video for this song 1000 times on MTV and VH1 but I just watched the official one on RUclips and the ending is definitely different. I never saw the gun before. In the "softer" version it just shows him drop his shoulder and the viewer is left wondering slightly - as a kid I always thought he killed himself with one of the sticks he had been sharpening in the woods, because that fit the video narrative.

You don't remember that clear image at the end of the video because the version on youtube is not the version shown on MTV in the 90s. YT has the original version, MTV showed an edited version that obscurred Jeremy's final act. However, there are some images earlier in the edited version that are better than this version, including one where the actor portraying Jeremy, who happened to be cold on the outdoor shoot, wrapped himself in the flag like a blanket to keep warm. The edited version has a longer shot of that, and it's a really powerful image.

Hey Doug, a 12-string bass has four courses of strings, with three strings each. It's sort of similar to a 12-string guitar, which has six courses of two strings. On the 12-string guitar, there's a normal string and then an octave string(*). The corresponding setup on bass would be an 8-string. The 12-string bass adds a second octave string, but the two octave strings are tuned to the same pitch. They create a natural chorus effect an octave above the fundamental. So yeah, that whole intro was on the 12-string, including the harmonics.
(*) On a 12-string guitar, the four lower strings are doubled an octave up, and the two higher strings have a companion in unison.

  • @edelcorrallira
    @edelcorrallira 22 дня назад +1

Personally have a different view on some aspects, but to me its the abandonment that really hurts poor Jeremy. Like it says on the second prechorus:
    "Daddy never gave affection
And the boy was something Mommy wouldn't wear"
Ive seen kids being paraded like circus animals and its just so bad. My closest cousin once said: "I hate my parents" it wasn't an angry outburst, he said so coldly and matter of factly. He would often be forced to sit on the table if ge didnt like something. If ge barfed it didn't matter they'd refrigerate it and microwave it until he ate it. If stepped out of line ... Either would bruise him.
Point is, cruelty is just so scarring.
Their parents now act as if he had never been born, so I have no idea where he is or what he does.
Now on this subject, Megadeths 99 ways to die is a great piece worth checking out.

This song is a good example of attempting to close the barn door AFTER the horses left, meaning that we only react to this type of mental dysfunction AFTER something happens. Does society really take heed to the warning signs from people or are we so enclosed in our own little world that we ignore those who are crying out? Truthfully, talk is cheap and that seems to be the most of what we do afterwards.

The uncensored version leaves no doubt as to what happened, but the censored version still provides a small clue. You see Jeremy raising the gun to his head briefly, but it’s in shadow. I didn’t catch it for the longest time. The freeze frame ending was definitely ambiguous…at first glance it does appear that he killed everyone else and that they’re bracing to protect themselves, when they’re actually just reacting to what they’ve seen.

    Did you know this:
The song is about a true story Jeremy Dell:
Jeremy Wade Delle was a high school student in Richardson, Texas, who died by suicide in 1991. The song, written by Pearl Jam and released in 1991 on their debut album Ten, is a powerful and emotional portrayal of the struggles and isolation Delle experienced.
The Delle family expressed their discomfort with the song, feeling that it portrayed their son in a way that was both painful and intrusive. They were concerned that the song’s lyrics and music video, which dramatizes the events leading up to Delle's death, exploited their son's tragedy rather than respecting his memory.
The band's lead vocalist, Eddie Vedder, and the rest of Pearl Jam have discussed the song's origins and its impact, expressing regret that the Delle family was hurt by it. The song is meant to address important themes like mental health and bullying, but the sensitivity of real-life tragedies can sometimes lead to unintended consequences.

Interpretation of lyrics is interesting to me. 'Blown Wide Open' by Big Wreck sounds like a gun and suicide song to some if you take it literally, but if you follow it a little more closely you realize it's metaphor. Not dealing with the crap in your life until it all blows up in your face and destroys relationships. You keep bleeding and it doesn't just go away. I like that some artists allow you to interpret however you like and don't tell you what it's all about. Love your song takes Doug! 😊

I appreciate you talking about how metal/ alt rock can convey very deep things. That’s why I’m so drawn to it. Side note I find many horror movies do the same, but generally people write it off as being off putting when there’s actually a deeper message in the art

No doubt this song was played on Omaha's KFMQ ("Q102, Nebraska's Rock & Roll Legend") back in '91.

Great video and great song. It always annoys me how YT sweeps things like this under the rug. Such an important and difficult topic, and YT doesn’t want people to talk about (or even use the word). Demonetize it, unlist it, or lock it behind a login. As if it happens because someone saw a rock video or heard someone say the word.

So I knew Jeremy. What a smart, handsome, conflicted kid. Our lives interjected at the hospital for a few months. Then he was discharged. Sometime after that, Jeremy did this. We were shocked. I still am. Good kid.
My oldest graduated from Richardson HS, my youngest is about to be a Jr.

I love your reaction to this, the aversion to the horror of the worst of the human experience. But still we survive and we should support our brethren among us.
