    Super useful slideshow/explaining. At the moment i am renovating a studio from the 90's and i have to connect many lines and patchbays to one big main patchbay. I need to do this alone and these videos pretty much walked me through every possibility.

    I had to watch this video several times as I was not getting it, however, I fallowed it to a T, turns out the inputs of your outboard gear go to the top row and the out puts to the bottom. I had it reverse and no sound will come out of my headphones, I believe I miss understood when he says the output ( at the front now top row A) goes out and patches into the B row(bottom) input. I don’t know if people noticed that, but anyway, after I reverse my connections on the back I got my gear to work, nevertheless, it helped me a great deal, God bless you Vatche. Thank you for this vid.

    Thank you, these videos are great! One minor thing that's worth mentioning... I think I'm right in saying that if any connector in a passive signal path is unbalanced, the entire signal path is effectively unbalanced. So, because those insert cables are unbalanced, the fact that the compressor feeds and patch cables are balanced is making no difference in this case. Of course, it's still worth using balanced cables wherever possible, to increase the chance that the entire connection will be balanced.

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  3 года назад +2

      Yes, you are correct about the insert points being unbalanced. Not many budget interfaces have balanced out/in. But, in many large live mixing consoles, they have balanced seprate insert out and in for each Mic channel, as well as the Master Bus.

    Hi Vatche. Excellent tutorial on patchbays and the different modes. I can see why the thru mode is a must for serial FX like compressors. What mode should I use for parallel FX like delay and Reverb? I am trying to integrate my Mackie 1604-VLZ3 analogue mixer with my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 generation II audio interface. I have a couple of 3630 compressors along with an old Midi verb4 and a QUAD V2 multi FX unit. Regards

    Hi Both Fantastic Videos !! How would you set up the Sidechain on the Compressor? I'd like to have that option on my patchbay. My Compressor has a Sidechain IN and OUT on both channels so would i use half or full normal? I'm literally as you are with my home studio in bits all over the floor!! Any help would be appreciated as i'm finding it difficult to find a definitive answer on google.
    I also have a dbx 266xs which has an Insert Sidechain so would that be different as if the jack is inserted it changes the signal path?

    now that was useful far better demo. I found I was losing my train of thought in the last video. this one works for me A B C . Now the real power of patching is with the AUX on the mixer. the FCA1616 is a nice little interface I have one. but move over to a mixer I used to get my AUX from the FCA1616 via line out, I can honestly say I don,t known much about the input insert because I,am in to synths and use stereo a lot, the insert patch leads are unbalanced I known with them being short there should,nt be a problem, but they can interduce hum, and as my synth are on the other side of the room. does the input insert produce a stereo sigal I wouldnt thought so, but it might be because it could be a digal signal ? do you known thx for getting back. I should of check your other video's. cheers....keep them coming/*****

      Maybe this video might help you about "inserts" ruclips.net/video/a_iJphEicgs/видео.html
      Yes, usually inserts are used for pre-processing and next to the mixer/audio interface. Few mid and high-end mixers do have separate insert OUT/IN that are balanced. Inserts on mixers/audio interfaces are analogue and 90% of the time on the mono Mic channels.

    what do you do when a piece of outboard gear as a L and R out? How do you connect and use that gear with a patchbay?

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  4 года назад

      Like a CD player? Then simply connect it to patch A, and then B to an input you would normally plug into, like your mixer or audio interface. Then you can use the patch to reassign the output of the CD player or the input of the mixer.
      Hope that makes sense.

    Great video!Just a quick question about synth connection i noticed that you have sent synth signal from the front of the patchbay with one TRS patch cable. Does that mean that you have connected synth signal at the back of the patchbay with also 1 TRS cable (by converting 2 TS (L + R) from synth into 1 TRS? I am learning so much from you.Thanks a lot! :)

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  6 лет назад +3

      The illustration is for mono output synth.
      If a mono synth, then 1 TRS lead, or 2 TRS leads and patch bays, for stereo synth. Even if the synth is stereo with TS signal, I still use one patch bay for each, and not use the TRS as stereo.

    I’m a keyboard player, and have this patchbay… and I’m struggling to set things up in an optimized way. The main purpose for me having the patch bay is that I have a rack mounted mixer for my keys… and it’s a hassle getting to the inputs on the rear (SM10). So my idea is to use through just to handle this. I also have an iConnect Audio interface that has 4 inputs on the front.. and 4 outputs and one headphone Jack on the rear.. perhaps an overkill as I’m not routing any effect chains.. my conclusion watching your excellent series on this topic is that for my purposes all patching should be set to through to allow me to achieve my goal of simply replicating then inputs and outputs of my rack mounted devices to the front of the patch bay? Am I understanding correctly? In your example you have the keys going into the back.. but again for access reasons I want the keys output to go to the front of the patchbay. As these are inputs to the mixer I assume following the convention keys should go to B1 on the front and a patch lead from B1 rear to the desired mixer channel on the rear?

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching.
      Nearly got it :)
      The keyboard is an output and should go rear A1, come to front A1, normalised to front B1 and out of rear B1 to the mixer.
      The idea of a patch bay is not only to bring the rear of units to the front on the patch bay, but also to minimize patching.
      This video might help you ruclips.net/video/mCAdbM6aDIw/видео.html

    • @apz9022
      @apz9022 2 года назад

      What are your thoughts on using THRU mode and connecting Keys L/R to A1 and B1 front and A1, B1 rear to the mixer… This goes against the principle of outputs on A and inputs on B but would utilize an otherwise redundant B1 channel if I were to use normal mode.

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  2 года назад +1

      @@apz9022 A1 as output and B1 as input is only a recommendation and makes it easy for anyone to just plug in, but there is no reason why you can't use any which way it benefits you.

Would I take the outputs of the 1616 to the output of the patchbay then take the inputs from the patchbay to the inserts of the mixing desk ? Thanks for any help you can give me with this best wishes .Dave

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  6 лет назад +1

      Not sure it will have many benefits with FCA1616 as A&H Zed24 does not have sub mix channels to feed to FCA1616 inputs. Not having multi-channel output from the mixer, defies the purpose of having a multi-channel audio recording interface. Yes, you can feed the FCA1616 outputs into Zed24 inputs for multi-channel playback.

    Hi. Just subscribed. I have a question regarding thru mode and outboard processors. My patchbay is an old Whirlwind. It doens't have a mode switch for thru mode. I can only reverse the pcbs to get normal and half normal mode. If I wanted to patch outboard gear in half normal mode how do I avoid the feedback loop danger when I have nothing patched in ? My only solution is using 2 separate patchbay channels for the input and output of an effects processor in order to avoid the feedback loop. How do you patch outboard gear if your patchbay has no thru mode switch? Will it damage the gear to have a feedback loop in a half normal mode when that channel has no patches in front? Thanks. Always enjoy your videos.

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. If the patch-bay doesn't have any Thru configuration, then only choice is to use 2 bays. You can't afford loopback and damage your gear.
      If your gear has input and output, then they would normally occupy twice the spaces. eg. 2 channel compressor, A1 & A2 as outputs, and B3 & B4 as inputs etc. So Audio Interface outputs are at A3 & A4 and input back at B1 & B2.

    How would I use that patchbay with a 16 track mixing board ? I have a compressor on tracks 1-8. For example, tracks 9-16 don't have any compressors on them. So track 3 has a LA2A connected to it and I want to send the compressor signal to track 11. Then record the compressor on track 3 to track 11. Is that possible through the patchbay ?

    Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if you are using an insert cable, you are actually losing the balanced side of things. You're connecting the compressor with balanced TRS cables, but the audiocard through inserts, which uses unbalanced TR cables. It would make much more sense to use the balanced inputs and outputs of your audiocard than the inserts, if you ask me.. correct me if i'm wrong. For the rest, nice video..

    • @RecordingStudio9
      @RecordingStudio9  4 года назад

      You are correct about INSERT points being unbalamced and very few mixing consoles support TRS out/in.
      But most times the EFX gear is very close to the mixer and this should not cause any issues, plus they are at line level. Not many bus compressors or EQ gear have mic level input.
