I agree 100% with your criticism of the step-father's "lesson" to his step-son in personal (ir)responsibility. However I do not believe for one second that the parent learned anything. He never, at any time, sounded reflective, never pausing to consider the judge's comments and respond in a way that would truly suggest his thinking has changed. The mention of the dashcam sounded fishy...if he's got that gear why isn't the step-father checking it, and if he's not then why mention the cam in the first place? Just strange, that bit was. The final straw for me was how he brought up his ex-cop father's advice again, very matter-of-fact, rather than acknowledging that that advice, to try to "beat the ticket", was the wrong goal to set.

One of my favorite stories was when I stopped a speeder on the way back to the substation at end of shift. The driver happened to be a 16yo young lady who happened to be returning to her home at the local Navy base. She was understandably a bit scared. It happened to be too early in the morning and she was technically violating curfew. I wasn't trying to cause her real issues. She'd been accepted to college and was very respectful. She was speeding home because her parents told her to be home by midnight but she fell asleep at her "friend's" house. I didn't pry about the friend, but I did ask about her parent in the military. Turns out, her father was a Navy Master Chief. I decided he could do far more about this than I ever could, so I called him. She was asking me to just write her a ticket and let her go, but I explained that she'd need a parent or guardian to come get her. He was unhappy about coming out, but I explained that I didn't want to put anything, including a curfew violation, on her record and jeopardize her college admission. In the end, I'm pretty sure the Master Chief reminded her that she had a curfew for a reason, but walked away with only a warning from me.

And he is working, which is much more than many teens today. Good luck to you kid, and your family.
One thing I found interesting that the dad mentioned foul language on the stop - the detective never brought that up, nor the judge. Bringing that up really makes me question whether the son really DOES freeze up in the presence of authority. This dad has blinders over his eyes.

Gotta love a "parent" who just can't let their kid take what they earned. I hate when former/retired cops start meddling in cases to protect a family member. The moronic kid admitted to crossing a double yellow line to the cop but my guess would be he and the other car were drag racing like the 911 CALLERS said. This kid is gonna grow up having this POS step daddy trying to protect him while he just keeps breaking laws. The fact this kid is sitting there with a smile on his face all throughout this leads me to believe he's done crap like this before a fake grandpa got him off because he's a retired cop. BTW, CONGRATS on the 5K OSG. WELL DESERVED!!!!

@@loisbolton1800 he tried the i don't believe the cop over my kid, pos in my book especially when he brought in the retired who should've stayed out of it. if he was trying to protect his kid, maybe take the keys away. he said his kid already had issues with driving and he had talks with him before so he knew his step kid isn't an angel when it came to driving. The cop gave him a ticket for crossing the double yellow lines he admitted to, if he wanted to be a dick he could've given him the drag racing ticket and not lower it to help teach the kid a lesson but not hammer him on points and huge dr fines. he was probably pissed that the cop didn't do the let the kid go since he was "related" to a retired cop thing.

@@loisbolton1800 Watching the step-father's behavior, mainly speech pattern really, I'm not convinced at all that he learned a damn thing. The only thing that could easily change my conclusion there is to hear the guy talk...a lot...in other contexts. Maybe the guy never sounds reflective, never pauses, never seems to be thinking before speaking etc etc. The fact that he jumps in to say he will pay the ticket, while knowing the kid works, is another telling moment. I try to be optimistic but I think the evidence points rather strongly elsewhere.

I’ve always been into cars. I’ve raced on actual tracks on bikes and cars, and when I first got my licence, and made a bunch of friends who were all into the same stuff as I was, man i can guarantee you that every Thurs Fri Sat Sun night, we were all up to no good. Either burnouts, or drag racing, rallying on dirt tracks, or doing speedway on abandoned speedway tracks. We were lucky in that we had a lot of areas with no houses and almost no traffic late at night, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that we were doing dumb shit. Fortunately, once I got a good job and made good money, I realised how important my licence was, and a clear record was, but I would still go out and watch, I just didn’t race as much. If I was caught and my car was impounded and it cost me my job, it would have also caused me to be homeless because no way would my mum have stood for that shit.

Oh God, this Judge is really something else. That should be the essence of the law, not to punish people in retaliation, but to educate them in not behaving in a dangerous way to them and to others. What Judge Simpson did here is exactly that, his argument was so strong that no one would have tried to dispute the ticket again. And lesson learned for the step father and the boy. I think that in the end they are both good persons, they were only misguided in their opinion that the court is your enemy. I really think they understood what the Judge said to them.

I personally trained my boys for their learners permit and then on towards their license. We spent plenty of time in a parking lot with parking, backing, starts, stops, and corners. We then headed out on quiet backroads and kept working and learning. Both sons have since continued this program with their children. Have rode with my grandchildren, and their fathers did a fine job. Even then, it is still a worry to see them pull out on that road. Those old wrecks happen so fast. Wish everyone's children and grandchildren stay safe out there on the roads.

After what Judge Simpson said to the stepdad, his responds should’ve been “I get it judge. My stepson and I will have more conversations about this. Would it be possible to make the original offer from the trooper available to my stepson again?” WITHOUT going into the breakout room. That was such a huge teachable moment, yet stepdad blew it. I love the logic here. Trooper could've given a misdemeanor ticket but decides a civil infraction is more appropriate. Former cop step-grandpa says 'well technically he has to witness the infraction since there's no accident so you should dispute it'. Stepdad and defendant take that advice.
At the time of the formal hearing, the trooper offers a further reduction to something that carries no points.
Stepdad's like nope! My dad says fight this on technicality!
Gee, would you have preferred if the trooper had just issued the misdemeanor ticket in the name of not being 'technically' wrong?
I think the trooper *just* wanted the young man to say 'hey, my bad, I did something stupid' which is why he went the civil infraction route and then offered to reduce even that, and *still* offered it halfway through the formal hearing. He wasn't interested in punishing as much as he was interested in, as Judge Simpson said, getting the defendant's attention. And the defendant (along with stepdad and stepgrandfather) darn near got in his own way because of a technicality.
We need more cops like Trooper Smith.
