This remix is intended to provide better insight into how our courts and the folks who run them administer justice to the public they serve. Remember they have to deal with folks who are often having their worst day on a daily basis. We also hope to bring you cases with interesting legal concepts, twists and interactions you may not encounter elsewhere…

Is it just me or do people who have a zoom meeting scheduled for 9:00 AM set their alarm clocks for 8:59 AM?
It’s amazes me the sheer lack of understanding that these zoom meetings are the same as a court appearance.
I totally agree I think zoom should be a privilege and if u mess up in one zoom meeting then u should be required to show up in person for all future court dates since u can't behave and follow court rules so many people totally disrespect the judge and the court and they wouldn't act this way if they was in person cause they would be arrested on the spot zoom court should be a privilege and some of these judges are way to leanent and allow this disrespect and behavior judges shouldn't allow this one bit I'm sure they wouldn't allow people flipping them off and cussing if they was in person in the court room so why allow it over zoom the judge is at fault for not finding people in contempt every time someone disrespect swears cusses or anything else and showing up without cloths or laying in bed is just as bad

Agree re: people acting poorly in Zoom hearings. If I were a judge, you screw around once on Zoom while in court, you appear in person from now on.

Love this judge. She has all the patience and compassion for those deserving souls. All hard nosed business for those who want to take advantage of her and the system.
I mean... the fact that this is the route we went instead of not arresting people for mostly petty bullshit, says a lot about our country and how bad it is right now.
I suspect it will be permanent. Its too much of a reduction of cost for our government to not love it, they have other things to spend our money on like oil subsidies and tax breaks for the rich.

The thing about Bennie Sims: it seems he has been tried and convicted of 2 different crimes in 2 different jurisdictions. He's either trying to combine the two or he thinks one has to be completed and finished before he can figure out the other one.
Honestly, I think he believes that he should be let off the hook by one court because he's already being 'punished' by another court.
this dude is absolutely insufferable. let him do the 60 days because he clearly isnt capable of understanding that he only has to do 10 days of community serivce and pay some fines to reduce his legal obligations by 50%. a total goof that guy.

How disrespectful it is of him to refer to the judge as "Washington" & his attorney as "public defender." Not to mention I'm pretty sure it isn't helping his case any either.🤦🏼♀️And I was taught very early in life that actions speak louder than words. This new generation hasn't learned anything over the years of growing up. But give me, give me. The court doesn't care about your responsibility since you didn’t care about your responsibility when you did the crime.
I’d ask the defendant to repeat the probation phone number after a couple of minutes of talking, to check the defendant has written it correctly, and give a warning that non compliance has mandatory jail time, so this is the final warning. No more excuses.

It sounds like a year in jail would adjust his attitude. The acceptance of this behavior and lack of accountability is how a society goes to ashes.

If you don’t want to sit in jail then do what you’re told. You’re the one who got you in this mess to begin with. (That’s to the guy in the car). Judge Washington is amazing and suggested some wonderful suggestions to the mom in trouble.
Some of these people act like they're the victims of unfair pressure or treat the court as if it was an annoying sibling. Court is like war according to Sun Tzu, the best hearing is the one that never happened, cause you haven't got into trouble nor has someone wronged you and you had to go to court.

I understand why some folk get a little caught out by court rules when it’s via zoom and they’re in their own homes. I don't think it's *inherently* bad, but it's true that many people don't respect the court when the proceedings are done remotely. Tbf though, a lot of people just lack any kind of common sense, and although that obviously doesn't excuse their behavior, at least they're not intentionally disrespecting the court. As for the ones that *are* intentionally disrespectful, I'm willing to bet many or most of them wouldn't have the audacity to behave that way in person.

Do some of these people just not ever attend a school? Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a different dimensions version of court and reality in these videos. If this is how people come out after an elementary and secondary education, then they really need to do something.

I’m amazed the way some high school graduates act, talk, write and think. They appear no smarter than elementary kids and honestly my 11 & 8 year old grandson do all of those things on a much higher level than many of the people I see here. They can even discuss politics and their thoughts on climate change and other hot topics these days. I say some graduates because their are many that are very intelligent and such. But far too many acting like Mr Sims and whoever that last guy was.

Good episode, OSG. I wish there were a way to make a recommendation to the gal that has a child and needs to do community service... Way back when I was young, I had an incident and ordered to 40 hours of CS to do. Here in Illinois, they would approve almost anywhere. I suggest she seek a church to do her CS. She might even find free childcare from church members.

Mandatory dress code ought to be applied for virtual court. Non compliance has a mandatory jail time, because for some people it seems to be a big joke and a way to have power over the dignity of the court. Also think of what would happen if they walked into court dressed like that.

I agree, except perhaps in the case where they are at work and can verify that. I realize that if they were meeting in person, they’d have to call off work. And that maybe they should call off work for Zoom court as well. However, many jobs will hold taking the day off for court against you, and we all know that lack of money increases risk of criminal behavior.

Why can’t people hold cameras still, stop interrupting the judge and keep your face centered in screen, it’s not difficult!
They need to start issuing bench warrants for failure to appear after about 5 minutes of wasting the courts time, and give warnings for contempt of court if they aren't dressed and ready. Mr. Sims needs to just do what the judge says without giving 100 other reasons why he can't do what he's supposed to do. Smh...🤦♀️
I want whatever the judge is on, that she stays so calm with hinkey connections, people seem to think a Zoom to a court is the same as to their buddy and have not the first clue how to conduct themselves IN THEIR OWN INTEREST. I'm sure the on-line dealing encourages the casual attitude and I'm not sure it necessarily speeds the throughput of cases. It's also the case that many of the people they are dealing with really do need things spelling out slowly and carefully for them.
