That's not true. I had heard this story well before Trump mentioned it. I had even seen debunkings of it before then. Trump and Vance certainly made the issue worse, and are benefiting by exploiting the disinformed, but there's a bigger problem than that. Disinformation campaigns need to be treated as fraud, and it needs to be done much more aggressively. There also need to be laws that penalize passive involvement in disinformation beyond a certain threshold, both for media companies and in some cases for individuals.

I refuse to live in small towns because the way the residents amuse themselves is by gossiping about their fellow citizens. The closest I ever came to that was working at an institution for the developmentally disabled. I couldn't believe the rumors that circulated around there about me. If I'd done half the things all those dummies said I did, I wouldn't have had time for work. Social media has succeeded in turning the world into a small town full of malicious gossips. As I recall, bearing false witness is considered a sin in the Bible.

Living in Montreal, where we have a roughly 150,000 strong Haitian community, of which about 55% are first-generation immigrants, I can say that, like many other communities in the city, Haitians have contributed to the art, culture and restaurant scene in positive and inspiring ways. Any Canadian politician making this kind of unfounded claim about any immigrant group in Canada would see their public career ended in an instant. Meanwhile, in the U.S., a candidate for PRESIDENT get's away with it? Unreal. Oh....and BTW, in Canada, her post would be considered a hate crime punishable by up to two years in prison.
