I don't know how I feel about this. I lot of movies use real world locations as setpieces for action, yet they rarely get criticized like this.
Although, I'm more surprised by how the Church was able to "win" this case.
Also nice use of Shadow of the Colossus OST.

Wonderful video. Very different. This could have easily been a documentary on a television network. I can only imagine what Sony executives must have been saying behind closed doors during this time!

This was fantastic! Living in the United States, I was familiar with the game and how it used real locations, but had no idea Manchester Cathedral was causing a fuss over their inclusion. It really makes me wonder if they were genuinely offended, or if it was a calculated maneuver to garner free publicity. There is no doubt in my mind of the benefits gained by turning a popular game into an international story focused on how your business has been abused.
Anyways, this was well paced, edited, and nineteen minutes of enjoyable education. Thanks!
It's not impossible they contrived the story for publicity, but I don't believe it's the case. I have the audio of a CofE debate about violent games from a few years later (I should upload it somewhere because the official links have been broken for a long time) and most of the speakers truly do seem to believe in a causal link between games and real world violence. I think they've 100% bought in to that tabloid narrative, and that the consternation caused was probably genuine.
But there's also no doubt in my mind that they played the story like total pros, and knew what they were doing. They came up with a new angle every day; the story didn't leave the media for a week.

In a way it's a very similar thing to how there are always "controversies" around "awareness" movements, "communities" or Lifestyle choice groups.
Usually it just starts with the "offended" group going: and then it slowly devolves into the offended party or thirt party marketing groups using the controversy for their own motives such as selling a product to wider audiences (my religion is good, vote Brexit, drink Pepsi, watch x Howllywood movie unless you're racist/sexist, etc. etc.)
I'm from Manchester and most found it funny but you know how old religious people are. I think they were genuinely mad about it.
I also think that Manchester isn't a city often seen in media and therefore they over reacted. If this was London it'd be water off a ducks back

Wow, I had no idea they took it this far, I remember this story when the game came out, never visited the place but heard a few bits about them being upset here and there but never wanting to sue or force guidelines or interfere with copyright.

I'm from and live in Manchester and I was about 12 when this scandal happened. I remember it very well, I thought it was so cool! But I got a 360 instead of ps3 because they were too expensive so didn't play it for years.
Fair play to the guy for not been lazy and just opting to go to the well trodden tourist traps that all Americans gravitate to. And trying to teach his country men there his a whole country outside London. One of the few that realised they are other places on the map besides the capital.

I suppose the real question is how much money were they after or did they get ? That’s the real issue here they were concerned that the building was being used for commercial gain that they were not benefiting from that’s the real issue money
