    Another very instructive video. I've been doing some research on the different NHLs. It appears that they keep on hardening over a number of years and that they often become too hard. I have also found that, for example, Roundtower 3.5 is actually stronger than its nhl 5. It seems that in the industry nothing is actually standardized. I have now started slaking my own.

      @@dportercontracting9974 Hello again, buddy. Sorry to bother you while the Ashes is on but then again you're probably out shopping with the missis. Have you used/seen one of those Quickpoint mechanical mortar guns and if so, does it work with lime? Also what you did with that big oak tree was sublime.

    • @dportercontracting9974
      @dportercontracting9974  Год назад +1

      @@carltonbreezy No worries matey. The only ashes that interest me are the ones in the firepit.
      I'd definitely steer clear of any mechanical application device as the mortar for pointing with lime needs to be a stiffer consistency. A sloppy mix won't corbonate properly and bleed salts down the face of the stone. The larger aggregate in a lime mortar won't pass through the nozzle under the force exerted by a strong forearm..
      Those application guns are ideal for pointing brickwork with a cementitious mortar that you can get some plasticiser in.
      Cheers for the props on the oak tree. It'll look even more magnificent when the hefty slabs are made into something to eat your bacon and eggs off of.

    Enjoyed your video you are very knowledgeable with the lime. It's a real science to learn.
    I've got a brick house built in 9inch solid brickwork with black ash mortar circa 1913.
    How deep would I need to rake back ?
    Is the process for brick the same as stone?
    Cheers from sunny Manchester.

    • @dportercontracting9974
      @dportercontracting9974  Год назад

      Thanks for the props Lee. That hard black ash mortar is like iron. Grandad grew up in Salford and could remember the ash bins on the end of each row that went for local lime construction.
      The process is exactly the same for all pointing, I've found. As long as your bricks aren't dripping wet when you point them up, you'll make a splendid job of the project.
