Dale Earnhardt, Neil Bonnet Tim Richmond, and more. It's been so long ago. I remember watching races with my Grandpa back then. Good times and good memories.
Thank you for posting this. I love watching the old races with the drivers I grew up watching. But, from these comments, I guess I'm in the minority about Bristol going from asphalt to concrete. It BECAME the true "Thunder Valley" in the late 90s with the concrete...and the racing was never better. The best rest ever was the 1999 night race in August, most true NASCAR fans know the race I speak of. And thank God they stopped with the damn dirt covered track!
Watching these races just depresses me with what NASCAR's become today. You have Steve Phelps trying to turn every track into Talladega while cars can't get close without plowing.
@@rdaws73I'd say it peaked before then. Probably around the end of 2002. True fans stuck it out for a little while after Earnhardt died but without him there for people to cheer and boo for it just wasn't the same and the gravity of that loss really started showing in 2003. It's been on the decline ever since
Seeing Bob and Benny is just sad. They made NASCAR sound so fun.😢😢😢 Also, seeing how Bristol was laid out, compared to how it's a literal collusseum, its not the same. R.I.P Tim Richmond. The biggest "what if" in NASCAR history.
I was 6 years old and at this race. We started going in the fall of 83 and then did both races from 84 to 88. If you notice on the front stretch nobody is sitting or even walking from about the tenth row down while under green. That's cause you would get peppered with chunks of rubber and some of them could hurt ya! Lol good memories! One of the biggest brawls I've ever saw was at the end of the fall night race during that time we were going. I can't remember which year but it started with people throwing chicken bones and hitting people below them and everyone had a ton alcohol in them! 😆 Nascar is nothing like it was back then! Can we at least get the commercial break music back on tv? I love hearing that old bluegrass!
Love these old races. I saw my first race at the 73 Daytona 500. The best drivers, no plates no speed limit on pit road. Now there's so many rules. Today Smokey Yunick would be run outta town!
when they built the empty seats all of the way around her the took the south out of it. Doggone shame, so beautiful as we see it here. I always wanted to visit Bristol back then and it was as much the scenery that was calling me as it was the racing. Now…im good. The yearning is gone
I feel ya on that being born in 2001 I never got to experience even watching this live but going there and standing at the very top and looking at the view is still awesome

**POINTS STANDINGS and WINS before the 1985 SOUTHEASTERN 500 (5 of 28):** #5 Geoff Bodine (618pts, GM) #12 Neil Bonnett (-30 with 1 win, GM) #44 Terry Labonte (-45, GM) #11 Darrell Waltrip (-49, GM) #9 Bill Elliott (-75 with 2 wins, Ford) #3 Dale Earnhardt (-94 with 1 win, GM) #33 Harry Gant (-97, GM) #75 Lake Speed (-106, GM) Ricky Rudd (Ford #15) was in the top16 all season but was only 11th. With similar results, Rusty Wallace (GM #2), the best rookie in 1984, was only 12th. Meanwhile, Bobby Allison (GM #22) finally had his 1st top15 of the season and was 13th almost 200pts behind the leader. Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus the rookie of the year before and whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Bristol’s case, the earlier race is the Southeastern 500 while the later one is the Volunteer 500.
Forget new Nascar I will watch these old races on Sunday they're more fun. They could adjust spoilers if they had to. When's the last time you saw a car run without a front clip?
No one could believe in 1985 that they would have grand stands completely around rhe track and in the future host the Tennessee versus Virginia Tech football game..and had 157000 at the gameh
It was Richard's 400th CONSECUTIVE race, dating back to 1971, and something like 960th overall. In 1986, he made his 1.000th start overall. Still, 200 wins in less than 1,000 races is better than a 20% average.
Sure would like to see one of today's drivers run around Bristol UP FRONT with no power steering. And finish it. Not taking anything away from todays guys, But that has to be a worse case scenario for a driver.
RIP Bob Jenkins and Benny Parsons
Larry Nuber too.
Dale Earnhardt, Neil Bonnet Tim Richmond, and more. It's been so long ago. I remember watching races with my Grandpa back then. Good times and good memories.
Jack interviewing DW with a mic... live ,during a pitstop is what makes 1985 NASCAR different lol
10:13 While Junior Johnson pounds out a fender! Three legends showing why NASCAR got as big as it did.
R.I.P. Benny and Bob
Best era ever, dig dem G-Bodies and Thunder Chickens.😄
Why was this ever tampered with? This is perfect. The asphalt, the cars, all of it.
Agreed! Mostly out of Corporate greed!
Couldn’t agree more. Still true racing in 1985
I think the reason was because the asphalt was breaking up which was a safety hazard for the drivers especially at those speeds.

Wow, its crazy how much Bristol raceway has changed over time.
400 laps with no power steering at Bristol in a big ole heavy 1985 Nascar Monte Carlo.. Vintage Dale Earnhardt.
Watching these races just depresses me with what NASCAR's become today. You have Steve Phelps trying to turn every track into Talladega while cars can't get close without plowing.
I agree. NASCAR peaked in 2007. Its sad looking back at how BIG NASCAR was.
Square bodies, open engines, asphalt surfaces.. the perfect recipe for good racing.

@@nathancausby4406 He would be proud if he knew that he WAS Nascar.
Yeah they might as well just do it virtual now in comparison to what these guys did.

I don't disagree but I would like to point out Rob Moroso as well as a huge what if. He would taken a few rings from Earnhardt and Gordon.
@brianhunt1742 whole-heartedly agree.
Another thing about these old races is you get to see Earnhardt in his prime years
This was real racing , even had a cabover international parked next to the turn !!!
Benny holding in his laughter at 2:10:20 is gold.

Really enjoyed watching this 🏁🏁
@12:18 Jack Arute asks Bill Elliot if he's gonna just "stroke it" for the rest of the day. :)
Crazy to think there was a time when there wasn't a pit road speed.
Good Demonstration on Banking.

1:03:20 Cows grazing, it's amazing how much this track has changed!!!
That's the most pissed off I've ever seen Neil Bonnett. Also the infamous Bobby Allison/Phil Parsons steering wheel fiasco
Dang, I want one of those jackets the broadcast boys are wearing.
Something to watch today in san diego california.benny and Bob sound great
2:38:06 What I want to know is the what the communication was between Dale and Ricky.

When it was real nascar racing....unlike now
Forget new Nascar I will watch these old races on Sunday they're more fun. They could adjust spoilers if they had to. When's the last time you saw a car run without a front clip?
Working on bodies car in the mud and gravel. Real nascar
I was there
The Greatest Of All Time!
Unlike today, you can tell where the cars are in relationship to the track.
They are going 20 mph slower probably.
@ethanweeter2732 The camera shots weren't constantly zoomed in. You routinely saw background as opposed to just cars and the track width.
No one could believe in 1985 that they would have grand stands completely around rhe track and in the future host the Tennessee versus Virginia Tech football game..and had 157000 at the gameh
Good Lord...bristol isn't even recognizable. I was almost 2 when this happened. This track has grown soooo much.
Yeah I was there last fall for my first nascar race and I was -8 when this race happened haha
Wooow...that was racing these days ❤❤❤ #bristol #1985 #winstoncup
eddie bierschwale sighting. The LEGEND 35:38
All that “washed away rubber” where does it go?? Downhill and into the grass?
Nice in car reporting on pit road.😊
9:50 whelp Darrell Waltrip wasn’t winning this race.
so THIS is Richard Pettys 400th race. that means he had won every other race since 1959 up to this race. sheesh
