Just word of advice even though it’s too late, it is best to install these on the roof over the overhang. That way if it leaks, it doesn’t leak INTO your house. You also won’t need to tack the wire down on the shingles, creating more leak spots. You also should have made a drip loop on your wire right where it enters the house. Otherwise, water WILL work its way into that hole. You cannot rely solely on silicone to protect your home… I’ve spent many years installing stuff on roofs, eves, and running wire into homes. A lot of stuff in this video are just problems that WILL cost you thousands in repairs later….
I may be mistaken, but if I remember correctly, when my father installed cables from the TV antenna outside going into the basement, he would drill upward at a 45 degrees angle, just to be sure that the water could not drip down into the basement.
And include a drip loop. The other day I was examining a professionally(?) installed point to point WiFi link and noticed they not only didn't have a drip loop, but the cable went straight into the conduit with nothing to block water or bugs from getting in. I have also installed short haul microwave systems & worked on cell sites and a surge protector was always part of the the job.
I remember driving through Wyoming from west to east. I was amazed on my gas mileage until I turned south on I-25 and was hit by a 30+mph crosswind from the west. When you were talking about windage, it reminded me of that memory. The high plains near the rocky mountains have a stark beauty to them. Way too cold & windy in the winter for me though.
in case people are wondering -- a drip loop is a slack bit of cable that sits lower than the rest. The whole purpose is to let water pile up at the bottom and drip off. If your cables were tight, water from outside could travel down the wire and get straight into an outlet or onto your electronic device
This gave me the confidence to drill a hole in the side of my house. You made this seem extremely easy and gave me a great game plan for when my systems arrives!

Pull some of that cable back outside and create a drip loop - the way you have done it (even with silicone) gives water a straight path to flow into your house (albeit slowly) and start causing problems, because of the surface tension holding the water to the cable. A drip loop sits below the ingress hole and helps the water drip and gravity stops it getting back up and in.

Nice! I'm really excited for starlink. One thing to note about your roof mount, you'll want to leave the bottom edge unsealed. That way if water gets under the mount there's a place for it to flow out. For solar footers (that only have one 3.5" lag bolt) we put roof sealant in the hole and two large arches on the flashing. That way if water gets behind it it'll direct it away from the penetration and it would flow back out to the roof.

[Why be stuck at home, when you can be stuck on the lake!] I did note a couple of things in your install which I would recommend. First, when you caulked the base of the mount, you ran it around all 4 sides. I would recommend leaving the bottom edge open, so that if any moisture did work it's way in, it is free to drain out [even with your relatively low-pitch roof]. Secondly, I would suggest including a drip loop at the bottom of your exterior run just before entering the house, this way if any water does happen to travel along the cable, it won't try to work its way in through any imperfections in the caulking.

Quick tip for wind noise in video: You can do something called a high pass in premier pro (to pass over the lower sound frequencies,) which will take out the wind noise if you adjust it just right.

I would recommend adding a longer pole so that the icicles forming when it snows wont stop the dish from moving. It will damage the motor. That is if your area snows during winter time.
Starlink dishes have a feature that if they have snow on them the electric usage will go up making the dish hot and the snow and or icicles melting off
Wow I was simply watching since I signed up and live out on 40 acres. Oilers die hard/season seat holder, didn't expect to see you reppin' the jersey! Love it!
One of the better install videos I've watched. The service loop at the antenna is something a lot of people don't do but should. That said, putting sealant completely around the base of the roof mount will trap water under it. There is no open space for it to escape. Also, where the cable enters the wall you should have a drip loop there. Extending the cable below the entry point and then looping back up. This helps prevent water running down the cable from following the cable directly inside. The water will go to the lowest point of the cable and drip off.
Thanks Mike. That makes perfect sense about the drip loop entering the home that I never thought of. I'm not super worried as it never rains here lol. Your comment will surely help others though. Cheers!
Just available in Australia. We've had no internet for more than a week due to floods. We can no longer rely on terrestrial service providers. I ordered Starlink yesterday - keen to see how well it works downunder.

Hey, as someone that had a house with a metal roof in New Mexico, make sure you get a good installer. If not done correctly, a metal roof can be far worse than a shingle roof if it is damaged via winds. And upgrade to the thicker stuff if given a chance. I can’t remember the details of the roof we replaced our old metal roof with but the thicker stuff made a world of difference.
You've a great house and what a view around! Thanx for recording this. BTW, how Starlink works during windy days like you show up at the end of video? Doesn't vibrating dish slows internet speed?
Thank you Алексей Сухов! That's a great question, that I was wondering before installing the unit as well. I have personally seen no negative effects with the signal and speeds with high winds so far. The vibration doesn't seem to bother it.
You forgot a drip loop at the exterior wire entry point. Now water will run down the wire and "attack" the entry point at it's weakest point. I'd pull it out, add a drip loop, secure it then re-caulk.
That is just SO awesome for satellite ! I remember the days when I couldn't even watch a youtube video at 720 P due to buffering.. now starlink makes it seem amazing af! lol

I LOOOVE where u live IS SOOOO OPEN ,fresh air, quite , i like those BIG mountings ahhh sooo beautiful WOW , GREAT to watch storms or UFOS from the house windows i love it there
I dont know if it rains where you live but at the spot where you go trough the wall with the wire put it down a little bit more than the hole itself so water can't creep in with time because the doplets form at a point lower then the hole and the cable comes from down below and not from above. It then kind of looks like a hook or the letter J. Learned this from roofers when the installed our Sat Dish.
Currently have a telus hub like you did, living in pretty much the same area as you (judging by the view). I've ordered a starlink and currently waiting. Can't wait to go from 2mbs to 200mbs
You should have left a little loop of wire where it goes into the house. A drip loop helps to prevent water from running in along the cable and into the home. I know you calked it but it is an extra bit of measure to help.
Also could use two of those clamps he had with one on the mount flush to another on the dish mast pressed firmly together. As long as they were super tight and tight against each other it would act as one continuous pole.

You did a fantastic job my friend 👍 especially with the roof mount. And putting the tape on your clips. That’s Spot on buddy. The few I’ve done, they absolutely love it. We’ve have the same shitty 4G point to point wireless for years. That star link is a game changer for sure man
Thanks for the positive feedback my friend! I agree, it's such a game changer and puts some pressure on other companies to improve their rural internet service. Thanks again for the tip!

You can do something called a high pass in premier pro (to pass over the lower sound frequencies,) which will take out the wind noise if you adjust it just right.
What a great video! Super clear, concise, easy to understand, and well edited. Thanks, bud. I also enjoyed the scenery from Alberta! I hope your Starlink service is still going strong.
makes me wanna live in the middle of nowhere with just a starlink dish
this is so true
I will be doing that pretty much with a big sprinter Van in Norway and Sweden😂
This is the future of human working and living. Big cities are dumb.
If you were living in a city for cheap highspeed internet I think you priorities are real messed up or a whole lot of sacrifices for that
Right… as long as u have the power generator and ur good to go.
I have run sattelite, cable and internet wires for 20 yrs, other than drip loop, very good job, I get my kit in nw arkansas tomorrow friday 16th.
I use zip ties to fill in the gap sometimes, like between the mount and the mast. Former USAF Aircraft mechanic. I have used duct tape on ducts, on aircraft. :) lol

This guy is super thoughtful. Thinks of everything.
So happy that he didn’t add any music to avoid the winds
This is why I want to marry a man good with handy work and tech! Who else could install things and hide the wire so neatly!! 😍
This is EXACTLY who Starlink was designed for people like you!
I don’t even get 1 mgb per second of internet
but I dont understand. Elon wants to launch 1000s of satellites costing billions of dollars to give internet to those not living in cities. But the number of people who dont live in cities and can afford starlink are really less and therefore wont generate enough income for Spacex. Especially in other parts of the world. Great video! I get to install my first Starlink system for a client on Monday and because of your video, I discovered a small detail I overlooked initially. Your video was very thorough and informative. I used to be an installer and your install was flawless. I'm strongly considering Starlink and not just to make Elon happy.
You and your video are an inspiration.

You are pathetic.
I am obsessed with your roof for some reason
Thank you for this excellent video. It is not only you were showing us starlink, also a very good workmanship on diy home improvements
Pro Tip: You're best off drilling from the inside of the house where youre going to put the line through or outlet, than drilling from the outside. I know you sealed the hole where cable goes into the home, but we always put a "drip loop" so water doesnt run down the cable and into the hole/wall. Good job though.

Thanks, great video! We’ve ordered and waiting for our Starlink delivery.
@@PROSDIY Immediately started thinking about installing a Starlink dish on an RV - with a little gyro if needed ))
You forgot a drip loop at the exterior wire entry point. Now water will run down the wire and "attack" the entry point at it's weakest point. I'd pull it out, add a drip loop, secure it then re-caulk.
Кусочек фольги или скотча приделай, и вода по ней будет стекать. 🚀
If the cable can move under those clips, the service slack at the top could be traded for a drip loop at the bottom without re-running.
That is clean install. Great work.
That is just SO awesome for satellite ! I remember the days when I couldn't even watch a youtube video at 720 P due to buffering.. now starlink makes it seem amazing af! lol
That was a very awesome video!! Informative and I loved the end with the Lieutenant Dan!!! LOL!! My in-laws live in Idaho falls, and it is also crazy windy up there.
That speed is much faster than I have in the cities. 😂
Exactly people say that broadband and wired connection is faster but its costly too
And ot has also a data cap
Starlink atleast has no datacap
I LOOOVE where u live IS SOOOO OPEN ,fresh air, quite , i like those BIG mountings ahhh sooo beautiful WOW , GREAT to watch storms or UFOS from the house windows
i love it there
I dont know if it rains where you live but at the spot where you go trough the wall with the wire put it down a little bit more than the hole itself so water can't creep in with time because the doplets form at a point lower then the hole and the cable comes from down below and not from above.

In the mounting plate Cut a slot with a grinder. So when u put the clamp on. It allows it to compress the bracket metal onto the pole
Soooo happy I found this channel. Nice and neat. Sturdy/strong. Simplicity.

Damn that view is amazing
You should have left a little loop of wire where it goes into the house. A drip loop helps to prevent water from running in along the cable and into the home. I know you calked it but it is an extra bit of measure to help.
If you use a saw to cut a vertical slot in the tube on the roof mount, I think the clamp would work even better.
That's an excellent idea! If it starts bouncing around enough I'm going to do that. Thanks wrekced!
@@PROSDIY dont bother . if you get play in the mount you need to add a support leg . to stabilize the dish .
Also could use two of those clamps he had with one on the mount flush to another on the dish mast pressed firmly together. As long as they were super tight and tight against each other it would act as one continuous pole.

When installing the cable thru the exterior wall, install a drip loop so water doesn't get into the wall. This is important.
Extremely important!

True. But With the amount of sealant he put in, I don't think water will get in!! lol
@@nicolasramis7212 it will get in through the cable. the sealant was for the outside hole. the water will run right in along the cable.
