I was in fourth grade when this show came on. I couldn't wait to get out off the bus to catch the series. I'm 53 yrs old now an now I've watch my children love watching this as well now my grand son too!
When i went to University of Washington my freshman year(1991) one of the RA's had the entire series on VHS and posted a couple signs and we had 200+ people in the lounge all watching it. We all sang along to the opening and it was almost painfully nostalgic.
Ahh... How well I remember this episode. From 25 years later the flaws of Star Blazers are apparent but the show was a benchmark production for its time and far superior to the cartoons of the day. It still brings fond memories. Even after all this time.
Love this show. So they changed it from the Japanese version--this is the version I saw and I still love it after all these years. For some reason I always missed this episode when it showed on TV, and now I've been able to see it. Great!
I remember how much it bummed me out when I missed the final episode.. so glad that I finally got to see it.. Starblazers is probably my favorite cartoon of all time!
Well to be fair she blasted them apart into the basic particles and atoms that they were formed from so that actually does return them to the cosmos in that now they've transform back into the immaterial dust that they evolved from. That's not really a change to the story that's more of a translation error...
Same. All life on earth is being killed by the millions, and Nova, Wildstar and Trailana are all sharing a moment. Lol But I get it. It's a good message and meaningful to the show.
They didn't forget, those scenes were never dubbed into English because they were cut from the American TV version for being too intense or adult for the very young audience they were marketed towards in the US. Many youtube clips re-insert the deleted scenes in Japanese for lack of an English language version. Even with the edits, Star Blazers was much more adult and sophisticated than any other children's television in the US during the late 70s/early 80s.
Hey I'm a huge fan of this series and it played a huge role in my childhood. I would recreate battles with ships I built out of legos. Sad today how no cartoons compare to Star Blazers back then. Also the music score enhanced this series tremendously. Do wish to add for what its worth, there's still a little missing from the end where Zordar is quickly trying to turn the ship around. Back in the 90's I bought the VHS tapes of the last four episodes of the Comet Empire and only saw it there where Zordar uses a whip and slashes the navigator before you see him (navigator) on the floor sitting on his behind. I never saw that when the cartoon originally aired on tv when I was little which stood out when I saw it on the VHS tape when I was older. Later I bought the DVD of the whole series and its not on there either. Just interesting how they completely took that out, guess at the time they were concerned about too much violence being depicted at that particular point. But that part was there on the VHS copy back then.
I agree with you about the childhood, but i think Gundam Wing compares pretty favorably. Gundam Wing used to be on the cartoon network every night so if i had been the right age i could imagine having the same experience. Attack on Titan is really excellent also, but it was never on tv and is a different genre although equally epic.
it was edited by whoever imported the series. The original was more violent and cruel. One version had the sargeant getting out before the planted bombs exploded in the comet empire engines. Also, in the japanese version the daughter of zordar and the first lieutenant was left behind to die as Zordar space ship lifted out of the remains of the comet empire...that is why the daughter freaked out so much. Zordar in the friendlier version he said" come on, i can still use you guys for more minor tasks"...but that was not in the original japanese version. I think as well, the pilot of Wildstar's fighter plane ( Conroy) dies as the plane lands back on the argo but that was taken out too.
Yes, thank you for everything, Trelaina. Thanks for dragging your feet until the Earth fleet was destroyed, Earth bombarded, and my ship turned into a wreck. Why couldn't you have dealt with the Comet Empire at the start?
I was confused by this too. But the Japanese version shows that Trelaina was of pure anti-matter. When the Star-Force rescued her she told them not to touch her. Even in the American version it is hinted that she has discovered the secret of anti-matter. She suppressed her true form long enough to love & help Mark. But guess what happens when she goes full anti-matter and touches Prince Zordar's Dreadnaught?
This series seemed to resurrect certain characters. Conroy is killed here (the Japanese version) Dash is also blown up in the Japanese version, then resurrected, but none of their deaths were shown or mentioned in the American version. The Farewell Movie done before this season pissed off the Japanese who didn't want most of the crew killed. So they seemed to disown it and redo the movie as a series. Sparing Sane Wildstar Nova and Sandor. Funny how Venture wasn't scratched in the Movie.
What a horrible ending. Millions of innocent Comet Empire citizens killed because their evil militaristic leaders wouldn't surrender, even when there was no hope. I wonder........
Huluplus stuck AN AD smack in the middle of the bit where Trilena knocks off Zordar. $7.99/mo for content that gets spoiled by ads? No more. This was a cool part of that show and I'm glad it's still on RUclips.
Yoshinobu Nishizaki put a movie (Farewell Yamato) before the Comet Empire TV series was created. Kodai(Wildstar) did indeed ram Zordar's spaceship. As far as I could tell, Leiji Matsumoto was very displeased with the movie's ending. The TV series ending is Matsumoto's idea.

Desslok redeemed himself. He had a moment of clarity when he realised that his war of revenge against the Star Force had been pointless and that he was on the wrong side. Withdrawing the Gamilon fleet, he gives Nova the clue that Gatlantis, the Comet Empire asteroid city, is vulnerable from beneath. The next year he risks everything to attempt to defend Starsha and Iscandar from the Dark Nebula Empire and later allies New Gamilon with Earth against the Bolar Federation.
Yes, I remember renting it a couple of decades ago. It was the movie version of the Comet series (but quite different) called Farewell Space Battleship Yamato. Its in the wiki, and its also on youtube if you want to check it out.
It did in the original Japanese movie version of the Comet Empire. However, the Japanese producers remade the Comet Empire into a 26 part series which was American dubbed version of Star Blazers. Neither of the 26 part series (Japan or American versions) showed the ramming of Zordar's ship by the Argo.
if you followed the japanese version you would know trelaina was of pure anti matter when the star force rescued her she told them not to touch her! even in the American version it is hinted that she has discovered the secret of anti matter. I thought so too but I didn't remember and thought I imagined that, but now that there's a confirmation I believe there was that ending. The Argo rammed Zordar's ship and crash landed right where it originally took off and looped back into episode 1 of the Iscandar series.
Watching this again after watching the Japanese version makes things a little harder. "I'm your co-pilot Derek" is just juvenile. Not to mention there was never an 'espace pod', Trelaina was actually giving Mark a blood transfusion and Trelaina doesn't say anything to Zordar to cover up the fact she and him and those in the spaceship died. >:)
