Oct. 27, 2017 | Felix Contreras -- Natalia Lafourcade is a successful singer-songwriter whose voice and music live on the edge of pop, but maintain a distinct independence.
A few years ago, while Lafourcade was traveling Brazil, she felt a great nostalgia for her native Mexico and its folk music. When she finally returned home, she immediately called some friends for the kind of party that is ubiquitous in Latin America: lots of social drinking, lots of food and lots of guitars and singing. Classic folk songs were on the playlist and a good time was had by all.
Someone recorded the informal jam session and Lafourcade's management team heard the tapes. "This is your next record!" they told her.
That record, Musas: Un Homenaje al Folclore Latinoamericano en Manos de los Macorinos, Vol. 1, was a commercial and critical hit, and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It only made sense for Lafourcade to bring her Musas tour to the Tiny Desk. The performances are an ode to a magical time in Mexican popular music, one that is revived with every note this singer and her band perform.
One important historical note: The two older gentlemen on the video are Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Peña, two revered musicians who played with the iconic ranchera singer Chavela Vargas.

Check Natalia's history, you won't be dissapointed. She has been a warrior from a very early age, and she has studied music non-stop. She's our tiny giant jewel. Mexico is so proud of her.

Absolutamente de acuerdo. Viva México !!
I don't speak Spanish and I agree
Why am I crying? I don't even understand a word she is singing? Like something beautiful you heard in another life.
It's beacuse the lyrics are so poetic that they trascend languages, and the boleros are beautiful. I made a translation for the lyrics of Soledad y el Mar, the first song. It is above in the comments ;)
First one was Lonelines and sea
I’m so proud she’s from my state 💖 Solo Veracruz es bello ✨🐚

What made you feel emotion is the energy us humans carry. We all have it but some never show , feel or experience it . Long live the human spirit.
First song sounds like its out of an old movie and Coming out of a radio, so beautiful
You nailed it. It's a bolero, an iconic style popular in the 30s and 40s.
Oh dude! I couldn’t put my finger on it!
This Tiny Desk performance was the perfect example of music being universal - I don't really know Spanish, every few words maybe, but I didn't need to. So much emotion and vibrancy and joy! Truly a pleasure!
What we cant understand we can feel.....
I really recomend you her new album De todas las flores.

As a daughter of mexican immigrants, ive felt a disconnect to my roots having always lived in the US. Listening to the first song filled a space in my heart that i didnt realize was empty. It brought me to tears. So much beauty, grace and joy in one song. ❤

She sings about love and actual love she has for her country. I saw her in concert recently and she took a selfie photo with us. She is awesome!
It's so poetic!
She sings about "Veracruz" 4hrs by car from México City
"like the sound of sunshine" = agreed. great description!
You got it right. She sings about love and about Veracruz. Veracruz is in the Gulf of Mexico, it's very sunny, very tropical.
I am from Vietnam and I understand every single word. They’re words of love.

The 1st song really transports you to a better warmer place.
She looks very happy while singing though
when they harmonize its really captivating
Sí!
Its about loneliness
It's actually a really sad song about loneliness and nostalgia. It talks about inundating yourself in it and hoping that the sea will sing about that loneliness
She's not just singing, she's living the song.

I know no spanish but the vibe and music here is such an visual and auditory treat, she really sings from her heart.
Tiny Desk is doing a fantastic job at showcasing Latin, Alternative, Mexican and Tejano music
Tejana?😅
Tejano?????
Tejon?
Tejano?? All regional music in Texas is mexican
Just so you know.
That was an extremely obtuse comment.
The best of Lafourcade Is that she was a famous pop star when a teen. Then she matured her art to real traditional Mexican music, becoming an outstanding representative of our beautiful country
Now it makes sense. Was listening to her earlier albums and from there I could hear different vibe of music she got back then.
Her music matured just as she did. It was a beautiful thing to witness the evolution of her talent.
Well, her older music isn't necessarily immature. They are very well-crafted and intelligent pop songs.
That's the most amazing thing... embrace our roots!

I have always loved the first song because at @2:20 she turns, starts singing, and turns back to the mic. It makes a surreal sound effect that makes it feel dreamlike.
Especially when the signal of her voice on the band mates microphone and the signal of her voice on her own microphone interfere with each other. Almost sounds like an effect peddle.

It has pased so much time
Finally I disvoverd your kisses
I was tangled by your gaze
You embrace me with all my defects
You know how to love me , you know how to adore me
Please don't go , stay with me for ever , to love you for ever.
Heart, you really know how to love me
I'm the flower that brings the hit to the garden of your live.
Heart, you know how to love me, please don't go, I'm brave to correapond your love.
It has pased so much time

Mexican culture is so much richer and joyful than some people in the US may tend to think.
Natalia Lafourcade looks so sweet and she's a great artist !
Gringos wouldnt understand our culture is a billion times richer.
@@urkric1865 Ellos también tienen una cultura aunque muchas de las tradiciones que tenían antes hayan desaparecido.
Jeje lo digo por qué un amigo es de Nueva Orleans y ahí es otra onda 👀
I wish I learned Spanish young but I LOVE the music so much.
As a latino, I must say I love our accent when we speak english! 🥹
