Lord Of The Rings - How To Make Boromir's Leather Vambraces / Arm Guards

  • This past Christmas, I got involved in the Fools With Tools Treasure Trade. A lot of makers from the Facebook group Fools With Tools gathered to play Secret Santas.
    I received an awesome gift from the very talented prop maker Karolien Hinz, and I needed to make one for Rasmus Loen Steensguaard, an also very talented blacksmith from Norway (check his channel here: / axrac .
    When I heard he likes Lord of the Rings, I decided to make him a pair of leather arm guard/bracers/vambraces. In the movie, when Boromir dies, Aragorn starts wearing Boromir's arm guards and I thought it would be nice to make Rasmus these vambraces, as a symbol of friendship.
    I used 2.6mm vegetable tanned leather and 2mm cow hide. Once everything was ready, I died the leather brown, and stitched the hide with my sewing machine. Then it was a simple assembly, stitching by hand all around the first piece and three layers.
    I really like making thing for others and I think they turned out pretty well. Rasmus seems to like them, so I'm happy.
    If you have questions, please leave them in the comments, and don't hesitate to share, like and comment the video as it really helps the channel.

    Quand je regarde tes vidéos, je me dis qu'il me faudrait 2 fois plus de temps pour réussir à essayer de faire tous les trucs que j'aurais envie de faire. Il faut vraiment que je me mette à faire un truc en cuir !
    Tu me donnes envie de faire pareil ! ... disons, d'essayer ;)

    Nice work! What did you back the leather with before going over the lines with the beveller? Some kind of anti-slip stuff?

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! It's an anti-spread sheet. It's use to keep the leather from getting to thin and to spread when you tool it. Not always necessary, but it helps a lot keeping the right dimensions of the piece you're working on.

    Bonsoir, super travail ça me donne envie d'essayer le travail du cuir. Petite question, quelle est la différence entre le cuir et la peau ? notamment tu dit utiliser un cuir cuir tanné végétal de 2,6 mm et une peau de 2 mm ! Merci !!

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  5 лет назад +1

      Bonsoir, et merci. Les peaux sont très souples, certaines sont déjà teintées et traitées. Le cuir végétal peut s'acheter en différentes épaisseurs, est plus rigide, peut être moulé, gravé, travaillé, teinté, assoupli ou durci. Beaucoup plus de possibilités pour le cuir végétal. Mais tout dépend du projet :)

    Beautiful work!!!! I’m interested in learning what kind of material you used to transfer the design on to the the leather and how you got the design on to that material? Also would the design have been permanent with out using the swivel knife if you just embossed it?

    • @RedSmithLeatherwork
      @RedSmithLeatherwork  5 лет назад

      Thank you Jon!! I used tracing paper specially design for leathercraft. One side is like normal tracing paper the other one is very smooth. You can draw the desired design, wet the leather and then emboss it by using a leather stylus. Once the leather is dry, the design stays. You can stop there or use a swivel knife to cut it and tool the work. :)
