Lord Of The Rings - How To Make Boromir's Leather Vambraces / Arm Guards
- This past Christmas, I got involved in the Fools With Tools Treasure Trade. A lot of makers from the Facebook group Fools With Tools gathered to play Secret Santas.
I received an awesome gift from the very talented prop maker Karolien Hinz, and I needed to make one for Rasmus Loen Steensguaard, an also very talented blacksmith from Norway (check his channel here: / axrac .
When I heard he likes Lord of the Rings, I decided to make him a pair of leather arm guard/bracers/vambraces. In the movie, when Boromir dies, Aragorn starts wearing Boromir's arm guards and I thought it would be nice to make Rasmus these vambraces, as a symbol of friendship.
I used 2.6mm vegetable tanned leather and 2mm cow hide. Once everything was ready, I died the leather brown, and stitched the hide with my sewing machine. Then it was a simple assembly, stitching by hand all around the first piece and three layers.
I really like making thing for others and I think they turned out pretty well. Rasmus seems to like them, so I'm happy.

Thank you again friend. So happy you like them!! 😊👍❤🖤
The pictures looked great but seeing the video leaves me even more impressed!
Thanks a lot James! Much appreciated.

Fabulous job G. Those are beautiful. I love seeing the way you make Leather come to life
Thanks a lot Steve. I love working with leather. The smell, the feel, and taking a flat piece of leather and turning it into a (sometimes) useful 3 dimensional objet is vey rewarding :)
Fantastic job Red. Congratulations. Cherra from Brasil
Thanks a lot Pedro!! Cheers from France!!😊
Wow dude, fantastic work
Thanks a lot :)
I doubt the movie prop was as beautifully made as this. Really good workmanship.
That's very kind of you to say. Thank you!!
Beautiful work. I especially like the white tree.
The white tree is Gondor's sign. After Boromir dies, Aragorn wears the bracers to honor someone he came to respect. In the books, Aragorn makes sure that a statue of Boromir is set up in the great hall with those bracers carved in.
Thank you very much. Carving the tree was the hardest part :)
Exactly :)
Beautiful work as always G. So many great details, but the embossing on this is just amazing... ❤️️
Thank you Ellen. And my sewing machine didn't let me down for this one!😉

Really nice work Red. I was fascinated particularly when you where transfering the design and embossing it into the leather. They must have taken you ages to make.
Thank you very much Matt! Transfering the design is not the longest part. The tooling is :)
They took quite some time yes, but when it's a gift for someone, it's always worth it.
They’re fantastic! I’m a big for of LOTR too, these look like they could easily have come from the films. Nice one Red.

Awesome Red! I always Liked Boromir... I didn't think they they made as much of a bad ass in the movies as I thought he was in the book but your bracers are super cool!
Thanks a lot Dave. It's one of my favorite character as well ;)
Impressive.
Thanks Jim!
BAD ASS!!! Thanks for the inspiration! And the awesome video!

It’s beautiful but it would be super awesome if you’d also give a verbal description of what you’re doing as you do it… For those of us trying to get into leatherworking knowing your process and tools would be a big help in getting started on making scrollwork on projects. Thanks for the video :)
Thanks a lot for the kind words. I usually add a description to the video to explain what I'm doing when there is no voice over, but feel free to ask questions about anything you don't understand. Thanks for watching.

Merci encore 😊
Wow,that it's sow amazing my friend,congratulations great work as always,big hug ;)
Thank you for the continued support Pedro! Hugs to the family!!
Beautiful end result! Critically - I think the white paint spoiled it.
Thanks a lot. You're not wrong, I'm not totally happy with how the paint turned out. My silver paint was probably too old...
Awesome work Red bro ! Based on your clothes, are two days enough for all this tremendous work ? Also thanks for the deeply relaxing experience ;) All my best wishes for your clan. Thank you so much

Hello!! Amazing amazing work. I know it’s been a few years, but Im working on a boromir cosplay and would love to know if you have patterns for the pieces and some information on supplies? What dye did you use? Can I attempt this with a limited amount of leather working knowledge?
Hello, and thank you for your kind words. All my patterns are available at www.redsmithleatherwork.com. You can surely attempt it with a limited amount of knowledge. Pratice is the key to master a skill and mistake are part of the learning process. With time and practice, you'll know what dye you prefer compared to a different one, and that's how you'll get better at the craft. Have fun and thanks for watching!

Pls could you tell me what type of paper you are using at 2:23- im seeking it everywhere, and i can't find it.And of course great work with those arm guards!
Thank you! It's leather tracing paper I order in Japan. I can't find good tracing paper anywhere else...
Nice work! What did you back the leather with before going over the lines with the beveller? Some kind of anti-slip stuff?
Thank you! It's an anti-spread sheet. It's use to keep the leather from getting to thin and to spread when you tool it. Not always necessary, but it helps a lot keeping the right dimensions of the piece you're working on.
Teach me more Obi-Red. You’re my only hope.

Beautiful work!!!! I’m interested in learning what kind of material you used to transfer the design on to the the leather and how you got the design on to that material? Also would the design have been permanent with out using the swivel knife if you just embossed it?
Thank you Jon!! I used tracing paper specially design for leathercraft. One side is like normal tracing paper the other one is very smooth. You can draw the desired design, wet the leather and then emboss it by using a leather stylus. Once the leather is dry, the design stays. You can stop there or use a swivel knife to cut it and tool the work. :)
Thank you Red I actually went to my local Tandy leather today and got the supplies. I’ll tag you on Instagram when I finish my first attempt. I’m sure it won’t be pretty
