- Hi again. Thanks for stopping by!
Some time ago, a young man told me: "Hey teacher, I know you play Super Mario Bros' Underground Theme on your bass. Would you please transcribe it for me to play it on my baritone sax? You don't know how many friends can be made by playing that!"
And I think he's right. Every time I play this, someone has a smile for me. So now that I have a new camera (I think you'll notice the difference with my previous videos), I've decided to test it recording a video tutorial on how to play SMB's Underground Theme. Hope you enjoy it. Thank you again! :)
EDIT: I've just posted the transcription to my blog, for those of you who are interested:

@BaseyCasey: Thank you for your comment! I never used any kind of effects and only recently got seriously interested in that stuff. Actually, I bought an MXR Bass Compressor two weeks ago and I'm getting used to it (so far I like what I hear), but at the time I recorded this video I didn't use any kind of effects. The only processing to the audio track is one normalization pass made with Adobe Audition.
Thank you for your comment! In this video, my Bongo is plugged to my Kustom KBA30 practice amp, which line output is plugged to my sound card's auxiliary input. Although the amp has all EQ controls near flat, it seems to give the bass a brighter tone. For a comparison, check my "Bass line for Rush's Force Ten" video. The bass was plugged directly into the sound card for that recording (no amp). I didn't want such brightness there.
Let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you again! :)
Thank you so much for your comment! I think the best way for you to decide is to hear some clips. Just after getting my Bongo in 2005 I recorded several mp3 files trying to show different settings (including piezos, of course). Let me know your e-mail address and I'll gladly send them to you (continued...).
Check the video description. You'll find a link to the tab there (posting links within RUclips video comments is a real hassle). Thank you for your comment!
hey, thanks a lot for putting this up! i could play the beginning part before, but always wondered how to play the crazy part at the end, and now after years, i finally know how thanks to you! good work!
You have now reached a whole other level of awesome. Grats!
I've been looking for this, glad I finally found it.really cool.
Man thanks a million for playing everything so slow as instruction and education for those of us that aren't as awesome as you are!
wuhoooo.. the Mario underground theme...!! i always use that to warm up before any gig... brings lots of smiles to the crowd.. thanks man for the transcription.. now i know what i still need to complete the song! thanks !!
Gracias Alva! I just sat down and learned this because of you. Saludos i Feliz Año nuevo.
Okay you my friend are an inspiration for me to pick up a bass again, may you have many more awesome years with the skills you have acquired
You can find my transcription at alvabasstuff (dot) blogspot (dot) com. If you look closely, you'll notice that I never play the low B string. Thank you for your comment!
Thank you for showing me this line. I learned it in ten minutes. From one fellow Bass player to another again thank you.
that bass looks awesome!
If you want my opinion anyway, I must say that I love the added growl that piezos put into the slap/pop tone and the sparkle that embellishes solo tapping pieces (putting aside execution flaws, of course). For regular fingerstyle basslines in a band context, I don't think piezos make a remarkable difference.
Thank you again!
thank you! I was trying to catch that second part!
Best Tutorial I've Seen!!!
Thanx heaps.
Hey! I've just posted the transcription to my blog. You can find it at alvabasstuff(.)blogspot(.)com (without parentheses).

@chapanese96: Thank you for your comment! The strings are DR Hi-Beams and the amp is a Kustom KBA30 practice amp plugged directly into my sound card's auxiliary input.
GREAT! good job man.
This is super fun! Thanks a lot for the slowed down version, I pretty much got it down, just gotta work on the rhythms a bit on the run and getting it up to speed! :)
Hey, check the video description on the right panel. You'll find a link to my transcription. Hope this helps.
THis is awesome I can't stop watching it!!! But you bass is awesome.
Great video!
Thank you for the information. :)
After comparing the Bongo's sound in the Underground Theme with your rendition of Force Ten (I love HYF too, especially Turn the Page), I conclude that the great tone comes from the bass and your excellent skills.
Thanks again for replying and please continue sharing videos of your playing!
gotta love the coins. nice vid, and indeed, everyone loves mario's underground theme ^^
some friends of mine made a medley of every mario theme into a huge arrangement; the underground part and the sea world part were really interesting XD
coin noises were really neat too, done with distorted harmonics and the like
(strictly fingerstyle) xD
You're a good bassist, I like!
@bassist99909: Thank you for your comment! That's a discontinued color called Lava Pearl. The fingerboard is made from rosewood.
Thanks a mill. I almost had it completed but I always hit a couple of wrong keys in a little section of the faster part... It was all my ear could do ;o.
Thanks a lot for clearing up my doubts. Keep up the great teaching.
Greetings from Panama
great job man.

Thank you so much ima play this in church!
You're good!!! Kepp it up
some fast finger work there dude
dude, I really thanks you!
@Slapbass19: Two. I've barely been able to take advantage of the three-finger technique. Thank you for your comment!
Very Good !
This is like in the upper echelon of AWESOMENESS
¡Muchas gracias! Same for you and your family, man. Happy New Year! :=)
Genial man! Beautiful MusicMan sound!
We it will play with our bassman. Thanks for video!
¡exelente!
Esta bello ese Bongo y toca muy bien...saludos desde Venezuela
Braaaaavooooo !
Thank you so much for your comment! I don't think any of my basses is better than the other. I love them all, but one thing's for sure: My fretted Bongo is the one I play the most, since to my ears it is the most versatile. I agree that any player can make an instrument as versatile as he/she wants, but anyway I wouldn't take my Ric to a tropical music gig, for instance. I don't think its typical tone is suitable for that kind of music.
WOW! Why cant all turorial vids be as clean cut and informatve as this one? No mumbling before or after about nothing, just pure information.
this is cool
Buenaa eeeh buenaaaa !
Nice! I like the Coinsounds :-D
love it tehe
It's my Kustom KBA30 practice amp plugged to my PC sound card. Thank you for your comment!
excellence!!
Your bass is bawss!!!
sweet!
Thanks for asking! I transcribed it in standard notation plus tab. Let me know if you want a copy.
gracias!!
@webbysmygirl: It's an Ernie Ball Music Man Bongo. Thank you for your comment! :=)
woah, this is so underground!

Good work dude this should have been the original psoing music, sounds so deep but good
¡MUY BACANO!
thanx my friend

i really like your bass guitar
Bass tab on the blog is set to private. Would like to view it, please set it back to public.
Thank you for your comment! I've just posted the transcription to my blog, so you can find it at alvabasstuff(.)blogspot(.)com (without parentheses).
The T-40's neck is my absolute favorite among my basses, closely followed by the Bongos and the Ric in the last place. It's wide and shallow (thin front to back), exactly what I like the most. There are many reasons why the T-40 isn't my main bass (passive, 20 frets, no low B), but the neck alone would make it my #1 bass.
I'm gonna set out to be able to be just like you man!
@BassDude50000 a big part is in the strings you use
Es barato o podria alcansarme para comprarlo?
Looks like a great finger exercise...
You should put more videos up.
well done
tyvm
Haha yes! more coins! Smash the turtle!! :D
Well done bro.
J
ha ha ha, the coin sounds just made that ten times cooler!
@Alvabass Okay, thanks.
Great rendition! :D
I love the tone that you're getting out of the bass. May I ask you: what amp are you using and how much does it affect the tone?
Good!!!!!!!
Se puede tocar esto en un bajo de 4 cuerdas???????????'
Great video! learned to play it. The part from 1:55 to 2:10 was really helpful
Thanks! :)
