The Masked Marvel (1943) is a 12-chapter film serial created by Republic Pictures. Lots of great action, and miniature effects created by the Lydecker brothers.
Don't know about anyone else but I got my ice cream and crackerjacks and settled in for a great feast of nostalgia. Fights, gun play car chases and the music, c'mon what isn't there to love, wish directors today would take notes, don't want a sermon, just want good escapism and fun!!
I LOVED watching this serial on Chuck McCann's NYC Sunday morning show back in the mid 60's - & such a thrill revisiting it today! One advantage of watching it on RUclips: I can zip thru all the fight & action scenes at 2x speed & take in all 12 chapters in so much less time!
The best thing about these Serials the clear distinction revealed or that Good always prevails and NO Buyoffs of criminals unlike to to days fiction. Our generations knew and taught this to our own. thank you for the uploads to remind some of us what was lost.
The only serials I'd ever really watched were Captain Marvel and Blackhawk. Thanks for posting these, they're a revelation. The budgets, acting and effects are really pretty darn good! Most surprising to me is the scripting. Sure, there's the occasional plot hole but that's to be expected with over 3 hours of sometimes intricate story-telling. And, for me, the "Secret Service in Africa" confirmed that they're surprisingly adult in approach too.
I doubt there was time for much choreography. These serials which have a total running time of almost four hours were typically shot in about three weeks.
the beat perfect almost lyrical repartee during the Quigely address exchange is near flawless topped with the "I will correct both mistakes.." coda, They really do not make them like they used too. Again Love, Light and Blessings AAP. Dx
And have you noticed that they rarely strike with their left hands? They punch like little school boys. When I was in the 3rd Grade, I surprised the playground bully with a left to the mouth. I got in trouble and he didn't, but he left me alone after that.
The stuntman behind the mask in the fight scenes was Tom Steele, a great utility stuntman ( meaning he could do different types of stunts ) but for some reason he was never credited. Other members of the team were listed among the supporting players, but not Mr. Steele.
Good series / rememer that the bad guys wore black suits and the good guys wore gray suits and did you notice that they never lose their hats /just like in westerns
They kept their hats on all the time to make it easier to edit the footage ("did he have his hat on or off in that last shot? He has to have it on when we cut to his close-up") - avoids all sorts of continuity errors!
My question is why so many Americans are working for a Japanese spy in wartime America? And how can the spy be headquartered in close proximity of the investigation without detection?

@@FIREBRAND38 You're probably thinking of the Cold War. The Russians were on the side of the Allies during World War 2. Traitors usually came in two types. One was the secret Japanese, German or Italian citizen; the other was the thug for hire who was in it for the money... they didn't want the Axis to win but just didn't like to think about it or let their conscience get in the way of their profits.
Many fight sequences - you can't capture anyone without losing your gun, and can't hit anyone by throwing anything other than punches. Somewhat unreal but hey, it's meant to be. Some good fun with tension.
You must be young. Cars in those days had two spares, one mounted on each front fender. The tires and the roads were really lousy, and it was not unusual to use both spares on a short trip
It hasn't changed. In 'Tombstone', Johnny Ringo (Powers Boothe) whipped out both six-shooters and rapped off at least 22 rounds without reloading. And that was in a 'modern' movie.
Bob Steele, the ace stunt man at Republic Pictures, used rubber tubing inside his hat to hold it on so the viewing audience couldn't see that he was a double for the star.
Like I said before and I say it again if I really lived though the horrors of the second war DAISY DUTCH Cartoon Shorts would appeared in theaters as well as LIVING LADY LIBERTY not to mentioned THE SUPERHEROES Of WORLD WAR TWO and even JUMBOLENA COL.COLOSSAL CRICKETMAN GLOWGIRL will likewise appear in theaters everywhere.

I love that the Masked Marvel has his own record label with a mask for a logo.
That's some fight choreography! Every room gets totally and spectacularly trashed.
But they missed my ex-wife.
After all these fights, one word..
IKEA.

this can not get any better wonderful cation i never knew whet i was missing fantastic
They sure wrecked a lot of cars, rooms and warehouses!
Really good stories, thank you for uploading Atomic Age Pictures 🙋♂️
fun series. old cars, guns and radios..
Another good one!
yep keeps thrilling
Exciting chapter 7. They not only destroy an office in a fight but take out a laboratory as well.
:)
Sakima was the same guy who played Darlas Dad in the Our Gang comedies, where he was much wimpier and whined a lot.
This is fabulous much better than today’s Rubbish The fight scenes are legendary, they must’ve took hours to choreograph.
I doubt there was time for much choreography. These serials which have a total running time of almost four hours were typically shot in about three weeks.
They really are great. Hollywood was probably bursting at the seams with punch-up expertise in those days I imagine!
Love a good Republic slugfest.

If you ever needed a wrecking crew just call these guys.
And have you noticed that they rarely strike with their left hands? They punch like little school boys. When I was in the 3rd Grade, I surprised the playground bully with a left to the mouth. I got in trouble and he didn't, but he left me alone after that.
Good bye Bob, and good luck on your next adventure! Excellent.
Cell phones would have cut this adventure down to about a half hour.

Exactly the same scenario. They can't shoot very well either
They kept their hats on all the time to make it easier to edit the footage ("did he have his hat on or off in that last shot? He has to have it on when we cut to his close-up") - avoids all sorts of continuity errors!
this is great, thanks!
Actually, one of the best serials in terms of continuity and believability.
Muito bom e uma pena não ser dublado muito obrigado pelo agradecimento
I like it! Best Rauferei ever!!!
The Masked Marvel scenes was actually a stuntman and his voice was a radio announcer.
Yes the stuntman's name was Tom Steel.
I knew a fight scene was gonna happen , when I saw all extra furniture
Clocked her with the 2x4 , like hacksaw Jim duggan Ho

Different reasons; same as for all the American traitors working for the Soviet Union during WW2.
@@FIREBRAND38 Or for the Nazis.

Consider all the anti-American scum working tirelessly to destroy our nation from within in 2021!
Good twist at the end with who is really that masked marvel. I was wrong the whole time lol
If that was a real cotton bail they couldn't knock it over. They weigh about 1500 pound s
Yeah I grew up in a community that growed cotton . I have seen my share of it.
Everyone wears hats indoors
That´s because they were in offices, not home places. You could (can) wear hats in working places.

I would have love to seen Mr.Crane go to prison.
No spare tire on the bad guys car.
You must be young. Cars in those days had two spares, one mounted on each front fender. The tires and the roads were really lousy, and it was not unusual to use both spares on a short trip
The masked marvel should have been a cowboy
For God's sake don't ever let them do a remake of these cliffhangers!
Damn these serials should be PG13..
Not the Flats to the face
...The villain sounds sort of like a robot.
It's amazing how many rounds those pistols can hold.
They need the extra rounds because they don't "aim".
They reload when they break in shooting a scene.
bad shots too
It hasn't changed. In 'Tombstone', Johnny Ringo (Powers Boothe) whipped out both six-shooters and rapped off at least 22 rounds without reloading. And that was in a 'modern' movie.
John Lawrence Yep, I was thinking the same thing!
They're real marksmen shooting car tire's
Did they glue their hats on their heads?

Bom
The bad guy talks like a old computer 0r robot
Poor acting style. That's the director's fault for allowing it.
Lol
Mae West.
I like the chick. She's nice.
I enjoyed the show but, it was too easy to figure out which one was the masked marvel. BTW, how did French Stewart go back in time to play Sakima.
Never mind that, how did high-class author George Plympton go back in time to work on the script?
Ihave seen chapters 7-12
I don't believe it he killed all of them.
all 4 men wore the mask

4 dudes and 1 chick always together . Not a good look

That's Tom Steele you're thinking of, and he was the best that any studio had to offer.
