- Hey everyone !
In today's video I'll walk you through my setup for photographing badgers at night. I have been lucky enough to have permission to photograph wildlife on some private land, which hosts a wide array of species. The badgers have always eluded me and so in the coming months I am going to put my skills to the test to get get some photographs of these elusive nocturnal creatures. So stick with me on this mini series to learn more about how to photograph badgers and more on how to use a DSLR camera trap.
I hope that many of you will find it interesting in how I capture some of my images. If you have any questions or comments then drop a comment below.
For those interested in my photography and want to find out more then head over to my website. I have started to write up more posts on the blog page which give a bit more detail on the shoots I go on. Nice video Josh! Will you photograph them live in May or June ? That is the best experience. Doing badger work over here in the Netherlands for a youtube vlog and documentary.
Hey there, yes I’ll be back out in early May to start again with the camera trap. At this time the cubs will be starting to emerge. With the added summer hours of daylight I’ll also be trying with the long lens. Ah that great ti hear you’re from the Netherlands, if you need any other advice let me know !
@Wildlife with Josh thank you Josh. Nice to hear you will go back again. There isn't much good footage of badgers out there. I will use a 300 mm f2.8 lens with speed booster, to obtain f2 equivalent. Great for dusk.
Hi
Magen here
Where u get flash cover ?
What types materials it’s that
I saw forms cutting camera traps case super clean and tidy
For this set up I used for cloth bags from a wildlife photography company. I am just about to film a video on my new camera trap setup including some DIY flash housing which are fully weatherproof. Stay tuned !
Hell yeah!!! Looking forward to your videos!!
Cheers Neil, really appreciate you watching and look forward to seeing your next instalment !
Nicely done Josh, I have my camera trap out for badgers at the moment, I hope you have some success with your set up. 👍
Cheers John, really appreciate the comment. You’ve got some great videos and loved the idea of photographing badgers from above, really different from the usual camera trap images !
Nice one, enjoyed that buddy. Been looking at some trap set ups like that, badger hair isn't round like other UK mammals so pings/flicks when you roll it between your thumb and forefinger 👍🏼 .....Have a new subscriber 😉
Thanks for the tips JP ! I’m slowly getting their but the badgers are alway elusive but good to get some practice with the foxes. Appreciate the subscription and the videos are a bit slow to come out but want to have something fun to watch so it can take a bit of time.
Your setup is very interesting. I've also been following Neil for a long time, and personally I've been practicing this type of photography for a few years. It has caught my attention that you use the Av mode in case there is something usable from the environment, very good trick. Greetings from Spain and looking forward to seeing those badgers. Thank you for the comments, I am working on some new videos and some new kit unboxing videos. Greetings from the UK and thank you for subscribing !
Wonderfull. Could you share settings on flashes?
Of course, as a guide I would look up Casey Smart’s lighting diagrams online. Each setup of different but for this setup I used the first flash setup in the guide. I will make a video on flash settings if you would find that useful ?
Hi what camera do you use please
Hi Graham, I use a Canon Rebel T1i currently and works great. This is used in conjunction with a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 wide angle lens.
Any luck getting a photo at the setup in this video?
Will be out checking the camera this week so fingers crossed. I’ll film the return to check if the cameras had some luck !
