ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Badgers are elusive
Badgers live in deep burrows, known as setts, and only come out to forage at night. Their brief daylight forays make it difficult to get a thorough understanding of their characters and as a wildlife artist I've always wanted to learn more.
Badger sighting
So I built an underground badger sett and installed cameras into secret chambers within it. Then the day came when I learned of three young cubs that had been found wandering about on their own along a roadside, having clearly lost their mother.
Badger rehabilitation
With the help of a wildlife rehabilitation centre, I placed the cubs into my artificial sett until they were ready to be released into the wild. I let the cameras roll as they got to know their new home and the resulting footage revealed a magical, secret world.
A glimpse into their secret world
I learned so much about badger behaviour, especially about how playful these creatures are and I saw things I had never seen before. Simple things, like yawning, were all new to me! Watch the film to see a badger yawn - in case you too have never seen one - and follow their story from the day they arrived until the day came to release them into the wild. Until this point they had not seen or felt grass and it is so special to see them take their first steps outside.

To anyone that may be confused why the badgers are so social: These are *European* badgers. North American badgers are famously solitary, grumpy, and territorial; European badgers are VERY social and live in communities called "setts." And they're absolutely adorable.
thanks for explaining this I grew up in Wisconsin USA and this state had a badger on the state flag plus the college football team is called the Wisconsin badgers. They are grumpy animals I must say
@@x35mmman Even there, it depends on the badger. The wild ones are definitely territorial and solitary creatures. But I've met badgers in rehab settings that grew up around and socialized to humans. It kind of rocks your world when you have a *NorthAm badger* waddle up to your feet, nose it, and start begging for pets. There's some amazing RUclips videos out there of these badgers. They're like any animal - different personalities, and how and where they are raised can have a huge impact on that personalty.
You are a great human being. The world needs kind, gentle, thoughtful people now, more than ever. Thank you!!!
@Stellvia Hoenheim Don't be silly, they meant thoughtful by helping create animal habitats and rehabilitating birds and wild animals, which this youtube creator does. He doesn't just make videos.
Why now more than ever?
@Stellvia Hoenheim What would be even better for the world would be less irritable people like you.
@@happyapple4269 lots of animals have been becoming endangered during these past few decades and this is helping if a tiny bit
Thoughtful great human? He’s a beef farmer.. he artificially inseminates female cows, steals the babies when they’re born, kills the male babies for veal, takes their milk & sells it for a profit & then after all that, kills the moms once she’s too worn out to continue.
Hypocrisy at its best.
Not only are you a wildlife researcher and wildlife artist, but also a true cinematographer... your video presentations and compositions are beautiful and enjoyable to the senses.
You're also a dedicated & talented worker. Thank you!
Agreed
