After a defeat against India in their last game Afghanistan found themselves in a do-or-die situation in the Super 8s. They will be up against Australia at the Arnos Vale Stadium Kingstown St Vincent on Sunday (June 23). Australia are one of the three unbeaten teams in the tournament along with India and South Africa and would look to carry on the winning momentum in the Super 8s. With India defeating Bangladesh in Antigua.
Australia will qualify for the semis if they go onto beat Afghanistan. In their last match the Mitchell Marsh-led side defeated Bangladesh by DL method in a rain-affected encounter. Bowling first Australia restricted Bangladesh to 140/8 from their 20 overs. Pat Cummins was the star with the ball for the Aussies as he became only the second Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup. Adam Zampa picked up a couple of wickets while Glenn Maxwell.
Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis got one wicket each. In reply David Warner and Travis Head got the Australian team off to a flying start. They made 59 runs in the powerplay without losing any wickets. Head departed after scoring 31 off 21 with rain coming on and off forcing frequent pauses in play. Warner carried on and brought up his half-century. He remained unbeaten on 53. In the 12th over rain returned in Antigua and that forced the officials to call the game off.
Australia were well ahead of the DLS par score and were declared winners by 28 runs. Afghanistan on the other hand suffered a 47-run defeat against India in their last outing in the tournament. Bowling first Rashid Khan's men conceded 181/8 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav scored a half-century and top-scored for the Men in Blue with a knock of 53. Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi picked up 3 wickets each. In response Afghanistan's innings never got going.
They lost three wickets inside the first five overs and were always chasing the game after that. Azmatullah Omarzai showed some resistance but with no support from the other end he too perished trying to up the scoring rate. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers finishing with magical figures of 3/7 from his quota of 4 overs.
Afghanistan were bowled out on the final ball of the match for 134. Afghanistan might look to change their combination and bring in Karim Jannat in place of Najibullah Zadran who has failed to leave his mark in the tournament so far. Can Afghanistan put an end to Australia's unbeaten run in the T20 World Cup 2024?
What to expect: There's something very special about St Vincent. Despite being so close to slightly more major eastern Caribbean islands like St Lucia and Barbados it's got a more natural and untouched feel to it. Even if it has got a lot of exposure over the years thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Just like the pitch here has over the last week or so ever since the T20 World Cup came to St Vincent. There's been less talk about the incredible setting of the Arnos Vale Stadium which is right next to the eastern Caribbean Sea but more about the 22 yards in the middle with spin degrees having been the buzz word about the matches played here already.
The weather will be cloudy and the outfield will be fast though and it could potentially be the most intriguing match Super 8s so far. The team have faced off only once in T20Is previously Adelaide Oval T20 WC 2022 Australia winning a last-over thriller by 4 runs. Australia vs Afghanistan June 22 08.30 PM Local 06.00 am IST (June 23) 10.30 am (June 23) AEST.
