I just got a pair of Topo Pursuits even though Altra Lone Peak fit well. The Pursuits have a Vibram sole and a nice wide toe box....and the reviews are good so far on durability. They are super comfy!
Columbia men’s Bahama for Summer hiking. I wear them without socks and it’s the best thing I’ve found. When you walk through a streams or lakes the debris gets shot out of the side of the shoe.
I feel the same way about the Lone Peaks. They fall apart on the outside but feel great on the inside. I like the “Stone Gard feature” on the LP’s. I am my Fourth pair and will buy a 5th pair this year.
Plus one for Merrill. They are great, I wear them hiking and around our hobby farm. I have really big feet size 14 wide, so I don't get a lot of choice. Before I wore another shoe(Keen), but they changed the last and did not bother mentioning it. Then they did not fit at all anymore, not even close. I double checked the size just to be sure.
I've hiked and backpacked the last 5 years in Merrell Moab. Comfortable right out of the box and last. They aren't as light as trail runners but have excellent grip. They also have a somewhat thick sole which is good for me as I have a very sensitive spot where a large plantar wart was cut out. I feel every little pebble with a trail runner.
I switch between Altra Lone Peak, which are very comfortable - like a cushioned moccasins, and Topo Terraenture 3.0. I also found that The Altras break down somewhat quickly, especially the outer sole, and aren't nearly as grippy as the Topos. The Topos aren't quite as comfortable, but are still nice on the feet. They are very grippy - wet, rocks, logs, crumbly dirt, mud - like a geko. Nice roomy toe box and low drop too. I reach for the Topos when going on tougher hikes, and the Altras when taking it easy.
Big fan of Topo’s. They have 0, 3, and 5mm drop options with an Altra like wide toe box. The 0 drop on Altra felt like negative drop because you sink into them at the heel. Always felt odd to me. If Altra offered a 3mm drop to counter the sink, I’d probably like them. They are comfy.
I switched to hoka's cause they are super comfy, have very thick soles which has helped a lot because I was hiking a lot of rocky trails and the rocks would hurt my feet. I wear the high tops because I have had so many ankle injuries in the past but they are still super lightweight. But definitely expensive.
I have had the Timps and the Lone Peaks. Probably like the Lone Leaks, and they're heavy in my rotation as I train for something called double Everesting. But both sides, as you said, just don't last long.
Have you ever tried any of the Topo Athletic shoes? I've been reading a lot of complaints similar to yours lately in forums about the durability of altras, and I've seen the Topos mentioned as an alternative. The Terraventures are usually what I see mentioned, but I believe they may have a few other models that might also work.
I switched last year from the Timp 2 (my all time favorite trail runner) to the Topo Ultraventure. For me, it’s not as comfortable over long distances. The toe box is also not as wide. They seem to be more durable than the Timp’s. If I could buy 100 pair of the Timp 2 in a 10.5 I would.
Forget Altra. If you ever decide to switch I recommend Salomon Ultra Glide. midsole is more cushioned than Timp, lighter than Timp, great grip, and currently on sale around 100 bucks.

The Merrells are too boot like for me.

Yea they’re too boot like for me. My feet need to breathe more.
@@HikeOregon They breathe reasonably well IF get the non waterproof. The waterproof trap any moisture that gets inside the shoe inside the shoe.
Topos or Brooks Cascadia/Divide. I still use boots for backpacking though. I wear the Divides as regular day shoes, living in the high desert.
Sticking with my boots for now as I tend to go off trail.. but I would like to try actual hiking shoes one day and these sound comfy at least!

Lone peaks work for me, and I'm getting anywhere from 500-750 trail miles on them before replacement.
Damn that’s awesome!!

I have not tried those.

I wonder if the mileage is based on the owner running rather than walking as the stride would be longer when running. It shouldn't fall apart though.
That's a good question.

I cant do Salomon shoes unfortunately they’re way too narrow.
@@HikeOregon That can be an issue for sure if you need that wider toebox. Bummer.
I like TOPO Pursuit better than my ultras!!
It seems like trail runners are all the rage the last few years. Wonder how long it will last?
Ultra sucks! So try again
