  • Mark Cavendish and Mario Cipollini, two of the greatest sprinters of all time. But, who is/was better? Comment with your thoughts.

    'The Lion King', Mario Cipollini was perhaps as famous for the custom kits that he often raced in as he was for his results. That said, with a world title, 12 stages at the Tour and 42 stages at the Giro and a total of 157 pro wins, Cipo could well be the greatest road sprinter of the last 25 years.
    Let's move on to Mark Cavendish. Cav also has a world title to his name, which he won in 2011. Cav has a total of 132 pro wins so far - so he could well exceed Cipo's total before he retires. Cavendish's wins include 26 Tour stages and 15 stages of the Giro.
    Who do you think is the better sprinter? Let us know down in the comments.

    Longtime Cipo fan... I miss the late 90s, it seems like much of the "personality" is gone from cycling. No more rivalries like Zabel v Cipollini, Pantani v Ullrich/Armstrong, etc. Doping aside, those seemed like the glory days. Peter Sagan is the only rider I can think of that still has some character.

    • @kimi20F1c
      @kimi20F1c 8 лет назад +2

      +Conor Verbruggen I'm not sure if I agree with that. (It is an insult to call Cipollini a better rider)
      It was a time, when everybody doped. In the subjective way, you maybe can cross him out of the "list of the potential best riders" - or however you want to call it.
      However objective, I think he still was a good sprinter in a time, in which everybody doped.
      For me, as German, Jan Ullrich is a hero. I don't care if he doped in 1997 or not, he will stay a hero. He won the Tour de France during a time, in which everybody doped.
      I also kind of respect Armstrong. I know he violated the rules big time, but you still have the heart to win the Tour de France seven fucking times. You should kind of beat the crap out of him for mocking the whole world, for cheating on the whole world, but you still give him the credit to pull his plan through, IMO.
      However, if they discover that a Tour winner of the years past 2010, he should ripped apart. There should be cut somewhere, and everybody who doped after this cut should really get problems. Thats how I feel. I think it would destroy the whole sport if you point on everybody who doped once in the live. I don't want to hate on guys like Ullrich, Jens Voigt, Andreas Klöden, Erik Zabel, and many more. But thats just how I feel.

    • @pjgarcia2417
      @pjgarcia2417 8 лет назад +1

      +Conor Verbruggen Yes! Marcel displays the best combination of sprinting and hair on the planet!!! Though I'm not sure Cipo has ever actually been found guilty of doping and I like to believe innocent until proven.

    • @conorverbruggen5133
      @conorverbruggen5133 8 лет назад

      kimi20F1c I get your points and I agree with most of them. Throwing lance to the wolves gave a lot of people free reign to be seriously hypocritical and there's a constant motif of scapegoating.
      None the less, here we're comparing an athlete who definitely doped to one who as far as we're aware has not, and in an overall sense, not just their athleticism. I know the era was different I accept that. But saying an athlete who doped is actually better than one who didn't, is that ok? Is it a good message for young riders? "You shouldn't dope, but if everyone is doing it... ahh we'll forgive you"

    Cipo. I guess many people forget that Cipo won a world championship as well, not just Cav. Cipo also won a few classics, Gent-Wevelgem 2002, on his own, bridging gaps doing a climb. That one race alone has things in there I have never seen Cav do. Cav is undoubtably one of the best rockets ever on flat or downhill sprints. But Mario won even out of his own element.

  • @gausselim1474
    @gausselim1474 7 лет назад +5

    What I would like to know is what was the weight difference between the two; I think Cipo carried significantly more weight which is why I don't think he finishes the grand tours like Cav can- which gives Cav more opportunities for stage wins. I think these guys are just two different types of sprinters. Mario took a sprint over much earlier than Cav- they were longer, more drawn out. Cav has this incredible high powered motor that he turns on for much shorter distances. Cipo had the lead out train whereas Cav does it a lot on his own, kind of like Robbie McEwen used to do. They did it a bit differently I think. Because of Cipo's bravado- he usually get's the nod- at least to people who watched the majority of Cipo's career. Hard to debate this one although they both are incredibly exiting to watch. For now, my vote goes to Cipo. No offense to anyone here- Cav is amazing and will be remembered in cycling lore for the ages.

    I'd like it to be Cav but on performance Cipollini has it. When Cav was doing well it was a joy to behold but it didn't last nearly long enough. Plus there were always incidents and accusations of foul play in his sprints. Remember the Hushovd saga? Not much of that anymore. Now he can't seem to finish a tour without riding into a car. The ToB accident was incredible. About 100 riders went passed that car and Cav hit it. Proves he's in the top 1%.

    Cipollini for me. Cipollini is a boxer and Cavendish is a street fighter. Who else would disrespect Cipollini during the time-trial stage of the Tour of California by taking one foot off a pedal as he went past to make it look like he could overtake the Italian with just one leg? "It's probably just the way he is," Cipollini said. "He probably hasn't figured out how to behave. I don't think it's clever to do that to a rider like me. I could be his father and I think he should have more respect. He's fast but he's still a kid." Cav doesn't care about promoting the sport and you can't be the greatest without that.

    I'm a little late here but I'm also really shocked only one guy mentioned him before: Zabel!
    Maybe not as stylish as Chipo ... but Zabel is really the man!
    12 Tour stages, 8 in the Vuelta ...pretty good number! about 201 victories in total or something? Tops Cav and Chipo!
    2 times in yellow as well, 6 green jerseys in a row, 3 points jerseys in the Vuelta in a row - but the best thing is: we're not done yet
    it was way more than just being a top notch sprinter in his days, he was even a really good classics rider: 4 San Remos, 3 times Paris-Tours, 1 Amstel!!, 1 overall World Cup (wow!), 3rd in Roubaix, 4th in the Ronde (2 times), 1 Cyclassics victory, 2 times on the WC podium, 2 national championships
    and then, besides all these huge victories, there's still the tons of "shit" he won ... like 2 days after winning San Remo he was back winning the first stage of the "week of Catalunya" back then
    ...he's the man! as much as I admire the others, but he is the man

    Hi guys, you could compare both Valverde and Purito Rodriguez. I talk from my spanish point of view, and although they were team mates at Illes Balears some years ago (currently Movistar) they have been contesting each other for many years at La Vuelta, some classics and other races. They are friends but when in 2013 Purito didn´t become World Champion(Rui Costa did) many supporters and media pundits told Valverde didn´t help Purito as he should...I don´t think so. Indeed Valverde helped Purito at the last Olympics...but these guys are two of the best riders I´ve ever seen. I´d like you talk about them. Cheers!

    Both Cipollini and Cavendish are in my top 10, maybe top 5 of best sprinters of all time. But we are talking of all time here. And for me, undisputed #1 is Freddy Maertens of Belgium. If you want to be educated, just check the Tour of Spain (Vuelta) 1977. 13 stage wins out of 19. And his 8! stage wins in a single Tour de France. Or his 7 Stage wins in the Giro out of 8 stages before he fell. Or his 54 wins in one year.

    Newbies to the sport would fangirl over cavendish because currently he's the best sprinter (although I'm pretty sure he's past his prime). Once we start to dig into the history of the sport, best sprinter without a doubt, cipo. Epitome of style and finesse.

    Hard to take anything in Cippo's era seriously. I'm not naive enough to think the peloton is completely clean now, but it's sure a lot cleaner than it was in the late 90s early 00s.

    two words: Erik Zabel, 12 TdF stage wins and the green jersey from 96-01, also managed to transition into a a superb classics rider in the later stages of his career...added bonus: no messy hair or northern brashness. There is the doping thing of course but hey, who didn't do that in the 90s, Cippo certainly did...

    To be fair, Cipollini missed many tour de France because his team was not admitted, even when Cipollini was world champion in 2002.

    as much as I love Cipo...Cav has never been shadowed by doping scandals while Cipo's name appeared in Dr. Fuente's lists putting more than some doubts on his 2002 world championship win in Zolder...and he was positive to EPO in 1998

    C A V!!!!! I watched Cipo in his racing days and I loved him then.. BUT he never finished any tour once the roads went up he was gone.. So it was very easy for him to put all his energy into just a few stages then go home...

    Cav is the greatest.... of my generation. Although saying that, one of the things I love about cycling is that its all down to the cyclist and not the equipment, meaning others such as Sags and the Gorilla could all beat him on there day.
    All in all, I think cycling is the winner

    Cav was the man to beat during sprinting's most competitive era. His blowout win in on the Champs Elysees in 2011, after losing his sprint train, then launching solo and making the rest of the sprinters (including Thor Ushovd, no less!) look like Cat 3 hopefuls, sums him up entirely. Cav for me.
    And Pauline F.P is out of this world, as far as female cyclists go.

    Cippo added interestpersonality and variety to the peloton andc was instrumental in creating the lead out, without which Cav wouldn’t have won a thing. Cav was just a petulant kid who sulked when it didn’t go his way Cippo had his own style.. there’s no contest imo... Cippo always!

    Watch Cipo bridge to the winning break in 2002! it was insane. Cipo 100%. The peloton needs outspoken riders like Cipo and Sagan. Cav wins a lot but we all can't wait to see what Sagan will do next just like Cipo they add a level of insanity. Cav is just to controlled and seemingly worried about his image to provide that kind of excitement. ruclips.net/video/SedHmKRnwpk/видео.html
