- This beginner blues harmonica lesson assumes that you already know how to isolate notes. You don’t have to know how to bend for this lesson. Of course your blues harmonica soloing will sound best when you can bend.

I’m playing a C harmonica in 2nd position, in the key of G. Any 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C will work for this lesson. Alright, let’s learn how to play blues harmonica!
While there are many variations of the 12-bar Blues, the most common and simplest chord progression is this:
I I I I
IV IV I I
V IV I I
Here are the harmonica tabs for the 12-Bar Blues Harmonica Chords:
-234 -234 -234 -234 -234 -234 -234 -234
456 456 456 456 -234 -234 -234 -234
-4 -4 456 456 -234 -234 -234 -234
Here are the 3 Killer Harmonica Blues Vocabulary Tabs
Phrase 1: The Question

Phrase 2: Answer
-4 -4’ -3’ 2’
Phrase 3: Trill

Harmonica tabs to my blues solo using these 3 phrases:
The point of this recording is to show that you really can play an entire solo with just these 3 phrases, and sometimes repeating the first or last note of the phrase. In this solo, I play 3 times through the 12-Bar Blues form (labeled 1st Chorus, 2nd Chorus, and 3rd Chorus in the tabs.)
1st Chorus
-2 -3 -4 4 -4 -4 -4’ -3 -2 -2 -2
-2 -2 -3 -4 4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4’ -3 -2 -2 -2 -2
-2 -2 -3 -4 4 -4 -4 -5 -4 -4’ -3 -2 -2
2nd Chorus

-4 -4 -4’ -3 -2 -2 -3 -4 4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4 -4

Absolutely seamless use of audio & visual aid with an amazing teacher complimenting it all. Thank you so much. This will live on forever. Rock on
Aw thanks Aaron. I really appreciate your kind words!
Aloha,
Luke
Thankyou. I have watched a lot of videos in my attempts to get to be able to play solos and your demonstration of how to make a fantastic solo with just three phrases and four notes really helped. All your explanations were really clear too with just enough info to cover everything necessary without drifting off into whaffle.
You’re very welcome Robin. Glad you liked the lesson!
holy crap ! now I'm going to have to practice all night :) awsome, and thank you for posting
Yes Robert! Do it! Play all night long!!!!
Dudee! This really unveils the mystery. I watched loads of videos and I'd say that's the best explanation I could ever find
Thank you for you kind words. Rock on!
You couldn’t have explained/demonstrated any better. Outstanding! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
As an oldie of 74, (I started at 72), this is a great instrument to learn. Stick it in your top pocket and doodle, it starts to make sense. I play blues and I've just started playing it in the band. This is a great place to start learning. When you start to bend notes you get a great kick! Thanks Luke.
Right on David! CONGRATS. you're most welcome my friend.
Rock on,
Luke
Wait! You're in a band too! WTG
I just love how Luke creates and teaches these lessons. He is such a positive influence. Now I just need to break out the harmonicas and start learning how to play!
Hi Pammy! You're just the sweetest lil sweetie aren't ya?
You are a great teacher. This is exactly what I have been searching for. Thanks a million.
Right on Deryck. Thanks for your kind words. Glad you liked it!
Amazing! I've never been an explanation so good for this subj. Great, man! This lesson gave me motivation to come back to my harmonica's studies. Thanks ;)
Hey, Raquel, that’s great news. Keep it up. Best instrument!
Having the knowledge is one thing but being able to communicate it, to share it with others the way you do, it's totally another set of skills. Congrats oh great teacher Onizuka
Carlo - how kind of you. Thanks so much!
That last line made me crack up ngl, nice reference
I just got my G harp delivered today and this is the first lesson that has been much easier to follow! So excited to learn 😩
Right on Carol! If you haven't already I encourage you to check out my Chords for Beginners and Single Notes for Beginners as this lesson is a little bit more advanced. Rock on!
Having knowing your Instrument Well is one thing, teaching it to others is another skill.
You have them both!
Thanks and God Bless from Jerusalem.
Thanks Hanan! God bless you from Hawaii. Happy harpin’!
Great videos, really loving following your beginner blues lessons. Please keep them coming!
Glad you like them! More to come!
Hey, Luke, awesome job explaining on this video. I mean, you do everything right (teaching rhythm, chord progression, technique etc.) without getting too technical. Watched a lot of other videos for beginners, but they either didn't explain things (assumed I already knew them), or they went so fast, that I couldn't follow them, even by rewinding the video and watching again.
I'd really recommend your videos to anyone new to the harmonica! You take things slow, you don't make assumptions about what I might already know, and you're very encouraging. Keep up the good work!
Wow thanks so much Lee! You words mean so much to me. ROCK ON MY FRIEND. 🙏🏼🎶
The best blues lesson ever! Great job, many thanks!
Helmut - Haha! You rock! Thank you, and you’re welcome!
This is without a doubt the most brilliant beginner's lesson I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them) I'm staying right here, and thank you for your talent not only in playing but also in your ability to convey the content. Very good concept and execution.
Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it! Rock on! 😎
If you are struggling to understand second position, this and the previous video about chords are really helpful and so far the only videos online which have truly helped me to understand playing in second position without switching harmonicas
Hey Logan - that’s awesome. I’m so glad the vids are helping.
What an EXCELLENT lesson. I'll replay it again and again while I play along until I get some of those phrases into my repertoire. Thanks Luke.
Very cool. Yeah, there’s a lot of years of information condensed into this short lesson. Bears repeating for sure. Thanks for you kind words.
Wow that was one of the best single videos about blues harp i think I have seen!
Jonathan, glad you found it helpful. Rock on.
@@Harmonicacom dude this is amazing
Thanks, you are one of the best in teaching and understanding of the harmonica. ..
Thank you so much!
Nice job, Luke. One of the best harmonica videos I have seen to date. Thank you.
Aww, thanks Mike. You’re very welcome. I appreciate you!
Great lesson. I consider myself a beginner and watched this several times. Getting better with it every time I watch.
Awesome. So glad to hear it.
man , you're a very good tutor... like your methodology.. I bought my harmonica 3 days ago.. watched hundreds of videos. but yours are amazing... I've been able to bend today and keep up with you on this Blues solo.. Thanks a lot :))
Wow, Andre! That's very impressive. Just make sure you get those good fundamentals on mouth position:
ruclips.net/video/3a_aXi1q8oY/видео.html
And Isolating single notes
ruclips.net/video/v4mDMJzsnoU/видео.html
As long you are keeping those fundamentals solid, bend away. But typically I recommend not worry about bending at least for the first couple weeks, or longer...
Luke, you are a great teacher and the visual aids work very well - thank you for doing this video. I've been playing for many, many years and can bend and twist the harp many ways, but somehow haven't be able to really get the structure of the blues as you have laid out so well and clearly here. This may be what I've needed to see what I've not be able to do. Thank you for making it clear for me the way you teach!!!!
YESSSSS! Sounds like a whole new beautiful world may be opening up for you. Honored to be part of your journey.
Rock on,
Luke
Ive spent hours trying to learn to bend and wah from different videos, this videos isnt even about bends or wah or oys but his calls are so simple I got it so fast, thank you so much man
Right on Dominic! CONGRATS!!! 🙌🏼 You're so welcome!!
Best tutorial I'v e seen. Very easy going, and helpful. Makes me feel comfortable whilst watching and learning (unlike some other teachers, who are also great players of course) Thank you very much!
Glad it helped! You are very welcome, my friend.
Rock on,
Luke
Wow, thank you so much for this fantastic lesson. I finally understand the blues structure, I can't stop practicing this. You explain every thing so well and make it a joy to learn.
Ha, that’s what I like to hear. Glad you’re having fun. Rock on!
You took the words out of my mouth. I saw those blues phrases for 20 years and nobody ever explained them properly. Now I know. Thank you so much Luke.
Broke down simply... Great teaching method... Thanks a bunch, Luke...
Right on Bruce. Thanks for the note!
Man! It's really nice watching your tutorials, I have learned so much! You gave no ideia how good teacher you are. Hugs from Brazil!
Thanks meu irmão!
After trying other RUclips tutorials and not really vibing with them I found this channel and wow, I finally am getting it. With an hour or so’s practise with Luke’s instruction I was able to go from struggling to play single notes and not being able to bend at all to being able to play along almost perfectly with the solo.
WHAT!?!? RIGHT ON!! CONGRATS!!! THAT'S AMAZING!!
@@Harmonicacom Cheers mate, I have invested in Beginner to Boss and am having a blast with it. By the way, do you remember what harmonica you are using in this video? It looks like it could be a crossover? it is the exact sound I am looking for (I'm currently using a blues harp and its a little flat in comparison although that could be entirely my fault)
Talking form Brazil! Great job, thank you
Helvio - thanks meu irmao!
Thanks Luke. Your instructions are the best and lm having fun learning the different techniques. Really appreciate your style of instruction
Right on Roland. Thanks for the note!
The Best harmonica tutorial ever! Thanks a lot! Hope to see more tutorial like this one.
Ha - thank you so much, Alessandro! Yes, there will be more in the future!
It was very cool !!! I finally found what I was looking for so long!!! Even with my bad English, I understood almost everything)) Great positive lesson! This can not be found on russian-language channels. Thank you so much from Ukraine! Definitely like and subscribe!))))
Right on, Ihor from Ukraine. Great to hear from you. Rock on!
Thanks Luke - Had a great time learning yet a bit more from you.
One of the best pieces of advice that I got from you was in a previous video lesson and all you said was take a break when playing a tune and don't try to play through the whole song.
It'll sound a lot better with breaks.
That advice was what I needed to tone it down and it works and sounds great.
Then you get to kill that solo on your turn.
Thanks again
Vince
Loved this lesson Luke. Thank you!
Yes Vin! You got it, man. Some restraint will pay HUGE dividends. Not playing is the easiest thing to do….and yet it’s actually the hardest!
@@Mihauros You’re welcome, Mike. Glad you liked it. Thanks for the note.

Thanks so much Marco!

Aw, thanks. You're very welcome. Glad you're learning! That's the key. Learning and having fun.

Great 1st half. 2nd half might take me 2 weeks to get down. ( I am a total beginner). All in all, best instructor I've found so far.
Thank you.

Thank you Luke!! I been playing the guitar for most my life, am 60 now, and am hooked on 12 bar blues. Recently started learning the harmonica, basically to accompany the guitar. Fantastic, I made it also using a Shuffle using the Fender free app and works so well. The chords in the video seem to be wrong but the correct ones are in the description, thanks for a splendid video and lessons. I just grabbed my cheap Hohner harmonicas which are enough for learning.
Just started playing today, amazing tutorial, got the hang of it quickly. Thank you!
