- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Pioneer league with Izzet Phoenix, a deck from Patreon subscriber Chadwick. This is the default best deck in Pioneer. I've been crushing the RCQ season with this deck and it's my top choice in preparation for the regional championship in DC. This is the last place you can play Treasure Cruise as a 4-of, making it easy to return your Arclight Phoenixes to play and apply pressure. Relatively recent printings of Picklock Prankster and Proft's Eidetic Memory are huge upgrades to the deck that was already great. Cruise from the ashes! MTG

Ah, Treasure Cruise. A card banned in modern and legacy. Restricted in vintage. But there is one format strong enough to handle it's power: Pioneer
I'm not sure if you're kidding, but anyway, the power of any card is generally contextual. Pioneer doesn't have fetch lands, making it much harder to fill your graveyard. The only deck that can run Treasure Cruise is UR Phoenix, which isn't dominating the metagame.
It's getting banned in Pioneer at some point.
@@JohnFromAccountingon a long enough timeline perhaps. But for the foreseeable future, it's unlikely they'll print stable fetches in standard or payoffs to cantrip decks like phoenix. So it's probably fine for awhile.
Re: Phoenix getting down to the bottom 5 cards of their deck... Multiple of my Phoenix opponents on Arena have had face-up lethal on board but were unable to resist drawing _even_ _more_ cards and decked themselves on their own turn with Ledger Shredder.
13:50 I've never before seen anyone beat Amalia after they put Aetherflux Reservoir on top of their deck. But I guess you always call it Ashiok, Game Ender for a reason.
44:25 I think the play here was to attack the big Phoenix at Sorin and not attack with the other two. That leaves them with no good options-they can only trade Vein Ripper for the Phoenix, or let Sorin die and then Vein Ripper can't get lifelink or get bigger and they can't go all out on attacks on their turn without risking dying on your next turn to Phoenices returning (since they don't know you can't necessarily do that). Attacking face with everything as you did is unlikely to work even with just the face-up information because it's basically impossible to race Sorin + Vein Ripper with the lifelink.
About r1g2 , you need to play with uw control, as you can remove a 20/20 kinda easily, counter the aetherflux (or shuffle with field of ruin) and you kinda don't care about the life total, the matchup against amalia is so funny
I've done it with mono-G on Arena by Boseijuing their third land then playing Ulamog a bit later
@@artemiskearney8019 with boseiju it is optional so they can just decline ramping to draw aetherflux, so acceoting is prob a misplay, unless they comboed only with 3 lands Ig in which case sure, oof
I got my RCQ with mono blue spirits. Although it is my favorite I don’t think I’m going to bring it in October. Love the pioneer content especially in the context of tournament prep!
Too be fair a well piloted tempo deck can top most fields but I respect not wanting to put that kind of stress on yourself with a format as cut throat as pioneer.
I played Mono Blue spirits this season as well, and wow the deck has game but it's tough out there.

It’s so good arclight pheonix has a home and is thriving, fond memories jamming it alongside crackling drake in standard. But as for 4 of treasure cruise…
59:57 the line I would have taken here is cast galvanic iteration, then copy lightning axe to slay both niv and yorion, then cruise after to refill and spawn your phoenixes, putting control back to your board and removing the chance they have to cast removal from their yard unless they can bring to light again and have enough mana left over.
Galvanic, while it does so inefficiently, can also turn your fiery impulses into 6 damage spells, which is fine against these big creature decks in game one.
Just my two cents.
This deck is why my Synthesizer deck mains Unlicensed Hearse. That, plus Glass Casket and Portable Hole for the Ledger Shredder and Profs Edict, gives sooo much time to get online with massive tokens. It helps having Ingenious Smith to dig for whatever answer I need.
I miss when this deck didn’t play all these Lightning Ades and you could solo them with Auntie Sheo

Don't you have lethal at 48:11? By just casting a phoenix and swinging with them all instead of channeling Otawara? Or is there something I'm missing?
Looks lethal to me on the rewatch. Probably got tunnel visioned on removing the biggo and/or thought it had lifelink naturally.

at about 1:00:20 you do have another spell you can cast to trigger the phoenixes, if you galvanic iteration you the lightning axe you could kill Yorion and Niv, (you don't get Proft's, but...)
Niv has hexproof.

I'm surprised you call Phoenix the best deck is Pioneer. From my experience, its Amalia... both the highest winrate deck, and the "its everywhere" deck to beat.

New microphone was purchased, but these are all backlog.
This video was recorded literally a month ago. I've been recording on my new mic for a week already. Those videos will go up when the previous backlog is used. They've already started peppering in, it's not a linear release schedule.
Pioneer has been a solved format for too long. There are only 4 viable decks.
