Joe was giving lessons on the spot. A wealth of knowledge. I understood almost none of it and I agreed with it all. Learning new things in a field i know nothing about keeps my interest and respect for those that can apply that knowledge.

I’m going to watch his dissertation a few times, just for the fun of it. Now I’ll worry about my walls rotting.

Wood insulation under a slab is something I never would have ever thought would be a feasible idea, interesting to hear though. I’d still go with an inorganic material though.

If your looking for a really old library, with expert librarians who often have Doctorates in Specialist subjects but also Doctorates in being a librarian from this place called Oxford University.
Well they work at library of record i.e they are required by law to hold copies of everything published in the UK including all forms of media, and the Library is located in place that was only founded one and a third millennium's ago and it was only about half a millennium ago that it became a city and only 450 years ago did it finally incorporate a Universith from a bunch of colleges and became the first University in the English Speaking world. I am of course talking about Oxford and its university and its universities library: the Bodlein.
Which if you can show good cause to need access and be recommended by someone of good Academic standing (Ma/Msc or higher) you can pay a fee for to gain access typically for a year of Research at a time. Personally as a member of the Bodlein I can highly recommend both its staff and its services.

Good info on drying with air permeable insulation and sheathings. I would argue that if you use air impermeable materials like CC SPF and Polyiso board sheathing you don't need to worry about barriers and as long as you drain the rain and manage the interior environment you will have no durability (CONDENSATION) troubles and a better performing High R value wall.

8:48 "a systems approach" is a smart term from the marketing department and rings better than "proprietary" or "walled garden" approach.

Not pertaining necessarily to this video specifically but i have a rep who is anti Mineral wool because of some bad experience with it becoming saturated on site. He trusts Steves knowledge and has brought him up as a source of information to me before. Perhaps next time you get a chance to cover mineral wool, you guys could go over the different types and what they are used for (ex: comfortboard, comfortbat, cavityrock, etc) along with some site logitics concepts of storage and how long it may be exposed before getting your rainscreen cladding installed on top.
This rep sells xci ply along with other wall assembly materials (no mineral wool) so ofcourse hes biased. That being said he reps our sintered ceramic, acm, 3mm aluminum plate , granite and BIPV panel systems. Mineral wool is the standard we use for wall assemblies here in Canada.
We sell our panel system across North America and I see tons of different wall assemblies as an estimator.
I just want to find a video to send him thats not from Corning or Rockwool that talks about water absorbition and effects if saturated and how it becomes unsaturated if it does during construction.
Ive been following for many years! Great work with everything and developing the build show network and the group of experienced builders. One of the best sources of building science info and building product info online today.

Appreciate the kind words. I’ll see what we can do on that video. In my experience it’s tough to get mineral wool saturated as it’s naturally hydrophobic. However in a flood situation I understand it can dry out and be reused.

That TimberHP guy is absolutely obnoxious. Really... a bunch of old country stereotypes? I like how folks stop laughing and he has to point out to laugh...
