  • “The Glass Ceiling” is well known as a metaphor for sexism in the workplace. In Silicon Valley, however, the term has been adapted as “The Bamboo Ceiling,” by Asian workers who describe a similar workplace barrier based on race. While the predominant narrative has become that Asian representation in tech is high, stereotypes still keep Asians and Asian Americans out of key leadership roles. In addition, it erases the differences within Asian cultures, both in race and class.
In this piece, we follow Pandora diversity coordinator, Lisa Lee, as she describes the experience of being an Asian woman in tech. What does it look like to come up against both glass, and the bamboo ceilings?

You think Asians are underrepresented in Tech? That’s funny.

Asian American women are under represented and Asian Americans are under represented in executive positions.
