It makes me so happy to see beautiful furniture like this being repaired and restored rather than being tossed aside and replaced by something new of inferior quality. As always you did a fabulous job! Your boss is looking very well!!
These chairs were very well made,it’s had strong joint at the back part which is where most chairs fail. Always appreciated and thank you for watching! 😺👍 Haha he is getting in his 8 hours of relaxation 😂👍
Always appreciated my good friend! I hope you and the very talkative Stella are doing great 🙂. I hope the weather is getting better over there, it’s getting warmer over here now 😥. See you next time buddy 😺👍😀
Cheers buddy! The dark walnut really adds a nice vintage look. The glue up was a bit infuriating, I nicked the varnish in one area which was a bummer. I ended up using my largest clamps instead of the mallet to get the joints tight. Always happy to help my friend. Thank you again 👍🙂😺
@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 I am in the minority here. After you had stripped the wood, the tone was warmer, grain was seen better, was livelier. Any finishes that glow and gloss seem plastic-like. Client wanted old to look new, erases the character and history IMO. Some caned seats had small caned areas, 5 inches or so set back from the edge. Keeping caned chairs moist is a bother, and hard on the tush. Look forward to the upholstered seat.
I would have rather seen you put it back together. I have a similar chair except the spindles. My great uncle made it & the seat is a needle point made by my grandmother. I'd like to see what you do for the seat.
I apologise I should have recorded putting it back together 😅. The glue up was surprisingly difficult, I panicked and was rushing to put it back together before the glue dried. Very nice 👍 your grandparents sound quite crafty. I should be able to upload it in a furniture video cheers 😺👍
I have noticed that Thomas Johnson never removes the old finish and starts from scratch on his pieces. Did you find it necessary to do that on this one or couldn’t have simply been cleaned and polished and finished off with beeswax or some such thing
I’m a big fan of Thomas Johnson as well haha. He has used stripping as a method of restoration, try the mitigating water stains episode, there are others I just can’t remember specifically. You could touch it up with wax and other methods but the owner wanted the chairs to look brand new, which would require starting from scratch and removal of the dents and scratches. It’s all really up to what the owner wants 👍🙂
Why did you not remove the flat board on the seat to reveal if the chair originally had pressed cane in it? It sort of looked like a spline for cane was peaking out in a couple of places under the flat wood of the seat. I would have liked to have seen it without the wood covering the seat hole.
The sheet of Masonite was the only thing stopping someone from falling through the chair haha. It’s an unusual design, it was a hollow square with the sheet covering the hole. I’m guessing who ever made the chair was looking to save on wood. I should have showed the bottom of the chair to make it easier to see 👍😅

Thanks for the adorable kitty break. Nice job with the chair too!
Thanks Rose! Not a problem at all, Hans loves acting 👍🐱
You have a fancy nail puller! Looks like antique. Thank you for sharing!
You have a good eye! It’s quite old I picked it up from a flea market for $2. Works fantastically. Thank you for watching 👍🙂
I love the colour it turned out. And I see that Han is living his best life ❤😺
Thank you Professor ☺️ Haha yes Hans is doing what he does best sitting down all day 😂😺👍
The new finish turned out so pretty, I love the contrast the woodgrain has 🖤
Thank you ☺️👍 it is indeed a beautiful wood, not sure exactly what wood it is but it’s very nice to work with as well 😺

Excelente trabalho. 👏👏👏👏🇧🇷

I learned a lot from this. The finish turned out better than I would have expected. Nice looking. Was the glue up difficult ?

@@ejwoodhouserestorations2796 Those chairs are over 100 years old. Mine is - I guess they needed a place to sit. ;)
I do the love the color now that you told the Shinedown. That shiny varnish was just not appropriate
Yes the oil based satin goes on rather shiny haha, I know it looks like gloss. It’s dries to a satin though, after which is sanded with steel wool. 👍
Just found your channel. Whereabouts in Australia are you from? I'm in Townsville. Nice job mate on the chair. 👍👏
Hey Cathy, I’m in Sydney the Blacktown area. I appreciate you watching and commenting 👍🙂 cheers, I hope the weather is nice and sunny up there.

I notice one of the spindles on the back is not turned quite as identical to it’s neighbours.

Haha just noticed this comment, I’ve got a blue tarp hanging up on the wall. 😅😂👍
All of that "sand" looks like dry rotted foam from the chair padding.
You are absolutely correct, I accidentally deleted vacuuming part so I apologise for that. Pretty nasty stuff to breathe in 😅👍
