They Sucked. Sorry, middle class white college girls with safety nets. Oh, and Hanna is married to a Beastie Boy... alternative music connections + alterna cred = multimillionaire husband. Gosh, what a rebel grrrrl ! *VOMIT*
For political music, if you're willing to stretch your tastes a bit, Phil Ochs is my favorite of all time. He was what a protest singer who sang about exactly what was going on without any poetic Dylan symbolism. If he was going to dodge the draft, he said it outright, instead of creating a longwinded metaphor. He had an amazing voice, was a brilliant guitarist, and his lyrics were always direct. One of the best of his songs is Crucifixion, which describes the cycle of sacrifice that happens when someone speaks out and ends up a martyr. The studio version is chaotic and, in my opinion, back in 1966, was ahead of its time, prefiguring the Beatles before Sgt. Pepper's and Pink Floyd's Pipers at the Gates of Dawn, all the musical experimentation that was happening at the time and what was to come.
man, there are some angry people in this comment section. I have a feeling that all that hate against other people comes from not being the person you want to be yourself.
Hendrix volunteered for the army and if he hadn’t been injured in Airborne training he’d have been a combat veteran. If you think Hendrix mentioned Vietnam as an afterthought it just goes to show that you aren’t old enough to remember how things really went down. In those days it was really risky for a rock musician to even mention Vietnam unless it was in a Fuck the War, Fuck the Establishment context. No one thought of the soldiers except as part of the war machine - even tho most had been drafted. There was NO “support the troops” feeling in the air. No retroactive compassion for the Vietnam vets for...oh, 15-20 years. Hendrix went out on a limb to even mention the soldiers in Vietnam. The only soldiers recognized by the anti-war community were domestic soldiers fighting thru demonstrations and political means. I love you so much, Henry. Please re-examine your assumptions about this incident.
My understanding with regard to Hendrix' "Band Of Gypsys" album (anyone who has better knowledge on the subject are certainly welcome to correct that understanding if wrong or incomplete) was that he was having a dispute with his original record label that put out the earlier Experience albums while he was in between studio albums at the time; so, in order to record and publish the material that appeared on that album, he changed the name of the band from Jimi Hendrix Experience to Band Of Gypsys and recorded the music in live concert format rather than in-studio.
With regard to "Machine Gun" and specifically his dedication to soldiers fighting in Vietnam, although as a late '60s psychedelic rock musician he was seen and presented as the posterchild of hippie counter-culturalism, it must be remembered for those who don't know details of his earlier history prior to entering the music world of that era that he enlisted in the Army (I believe that was the service he joined, that is) in the Airborne division.
The story I heard from the Band of Gypsys documentary was that after The Experience dissolved, Jimi tried experimenting with a new group called Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. This is the band that performed at Woodstock. Simultaneously, Jimi was having problems with his record deal, which was terrible as most tend to be. He was a huge star, but mostly on white radio. This was a source of frustration for Jimi as he wanted his music to reach everyone. He was also a dude who played with different musicians all the time as he basically lived in the studio, hence why they built Electric Lady Studios. Combine all that and you get Band of Gypsys, which was composed of his friend Billy Cox from the "chitlin circuit" and army days. The group also included Buddy Miles who was a bigtime soul/R+B/funk drummer. The three friends combined to make a live album that would get Jimi out of his contract and also to debut the new sound they were working on.
I keep reading comments on this that make me cringe. I'm going to be honest, most of you guys don't know what communism is. You don't know what capitalism is either. I'm not going to give a huge RUclips lecture but I hope you all end up wanting to question what you think you know, and that you learn for yourselves how the world truly works.
Funny what he says about that Black Flag cd being the only one you really need. I owned pretty much every Black Flag at one point in my life, but it doesn't hold up. Teenage angst made by people that are 20+. Most of it is crap, but I kept that cd and still listen to it.
I think the 'hiding money in other countries' is more of a bumber sticker to rally around than a definition of how things operate. I also don't know that the 'rich' don't operate within the law. Its easy to assume and demonize the idea, but yet again i don't believe its a definition of how things happen. As far as contributing to the system that allowed them to florish, I believe thats the jobs the company provides DO contribute. This leads to a better question...What is 'proper capitalism'?
In all these videos, Henry always cites bands (it seems like) everyone already knows and listens to. John Coltrane, Hendrix, Public Enemy, The Clash, Black Sabbath, Joy Division these are all extremely well known, (mostly) multi platinum artists. How about some more obscure bands like: Current 93 Do make Say Think Q and Not U Mercury Program Legendary Pink Dots, Black Sheep Eric Dolphy Kryztof Penderecki Scott Lafaro Don Drummond Death in June The Swans Dorothy Ashby Helmet Prong Death The Rachels Mad Season Hum, Autchere, Boards of Canada, Quantec, Slick Rick Young Marble Giants Paleface Television Will he venture into new territory, or in his next video will he be onto how great Nirvana's Nevermind was?.
Yeah, I can confirm that the vast majority of people do not listen to any of the bands listed in this video besides a few public enemy songs that hit the charts and and a few clash songs from later in their career. Everyone who is an avid listener listens to this stuff, but most people don't really venture outside of that top 40 area.
dude has an einstürzende neubauten tattoo and used to hang out with lydia lunch and diamanda galas back in the day. i’m pretty sure he knows his shit…just talking about great music that’s accessible for everyone and that many people enjoy. that’s what’s great about music, is that people can like all kinds of it.
"What is 'proper capitalism'?" Capitalism that is anti-corporatism is proper and good capitalism! Such as, being anti-Walmart, anti-Citizen's United, anti-big business, supporting the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, being pro-worker and not necessarily pro-union, being against illegal immigration and not being a racist asshole, etc.
Capitalism is an outgrowth of capital, the wage system and the class system. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD OR PROPER OR DECENT CAPITALISM. As long as the Haves rule over the Have Nots the world will continue to be a giant ball of shit!
Your problem is not with Corporations, it's with governments that collude with evil corporations. The answer is not more government - more government begets more corruption.
Anti-trust legislation was intended to prevent corporations from essentially becoming monopolies but it’s has been gutted...and what’s left is not enforced. I don’t know if it would’ve helped in the 21st century. It was too difficult to extrapolate today’s economic/political environment in the late 19th and early 20th century.
im not against proper capitalism , i just dont think the gap between those of us who work hard for our wages and those who sit in a chair ordering others to figuratively whip us while we work , earning money off of our sweat and contributing nothing to the system , while hiding thier money in other countries so they cant even do the patriotic thing and care for the nation that helped them to success , i dont want the rich to give up their wealth , i just want them held accountable to the law
That's where you're Clueless. If you think the people sitting in the chair ordering people around are only responsible for that, and somehow won a lottery to get there ... well, that explains why you work for them and not vice versa. But go ahead and keep thinking that flipping the system over this somehow going to benefit you. You will still be you, unfortunately for you.
Corruption exists in all systems friend...Capitalism, Socialism, Communism....All of which have merits and flaws. I prefer Capitalism. To each his own.
The main problem is corporations become too powerful. They begin to privatise the profits and socialise the losses (too big to fail). Also, having a lot of capital makes it easy to accumulate more capital (the rich get richer the poor go nowhere)
do you appreciate the hard work people in the police force , the firefighters , and the teachers do? if you do , then why do alot of right wing individuals cast them as essentially evil when they ask for better care , it seems a bit hypocritical to me to love a group for providing people with services , and then slandering them when they ask for better treatment. Because we care about our public servants we march in solidarity with them to help them receive better care.
you insult my personal character without knowing me , you make a ignorant judgement call about my age without doing proper research , and you consistantly try to regulate me below you by calling me a "boy" i care about my fellow human beings , life matters more then nationality.
What a funny little list of the “greats” by Henry. The defiant 1978 Rolling Stones’ evisceration of socialist England “Hang Fire” didn’t make the cut, Same with Dylan’s rousing defense of Israel against international criticism “Neighborhood Bully”. No mention of Merle Haggard’s legendary cannon blast aimed squarely at the swarms of America-bashing protesters, “Walking on the Fighting Side of Me”. Clearly, “great political songs” is an evasion by Henry. This is just a celebration of that most loathsome of musical genres, the “protest song,”. A form of expression absolutely integral to the political identity of the sanctimonious, personally miserable,, and invariably ill-informed haters that comprise the American and European Left.
For every women that I've objectified I've been snob buy ten because I was a broken nerd in Colledge. Half of the one night stand that I had didn't evolved in something serious on my decision and the other half on the girl's decision. For one ass that I chewed on with workers I had my ass chewed by three site managers, one engineering director and one engineering V-P... I guess I had the temper of a guy forced to work 60/70 hours per week when I was in the U.S. ruclips.net/video/n_4UmAY852I/видео.html
Run along, boy. Marxian is commonly used to describe philosophies pertaining to Marx. I don't watch television. I read books. We? Follow the status quo and see how far you get. I have no time to argue with teenagers.
"And that's really all the black flag you'll ever need."

Henry has impeccable taste in music!!

They Sucked. Sorry, middle class white college girls with safety nets. Oh, and Hanna is married to a Beastie Boy... alternative music connections + alterna cred = multimillionaire husband. Gosh, what a rebel grrrrl ! *VOMIT*

Wow. I went through phases of almost everything he talked about musically. I'm sure a lot of people have.
conflict - from protest to resistance
He actually Interviewed him years ago on his short-lived IFC show. It's on RUclips if you want to check it out...
Thanks for your insights.

Billy Karen was the guitarist for Bikini Kill, he must be a good sort to be in the all girl band and never get full credit for his presence.

I wish I’d been born with your sunny outlook on like. Not sarcastic.

Should have picked Sandinista! by the Clash. Nevertheless any Clash will do. Respect, Rollins!
Cut The Crap won't do. But every other Clash record makes the cut.

Correct, Shruggz. If he hadn’t broken his ankle in training he would’ve been Vietnam bound himself.

Oh I know that, I just wanted him to talk about him in this video.
Wow. There are a lot less CDs at Grimey's these days.

I wonder if Billy Karren was unhappy to hear that Bikini Kill was "all girls," according to Henry.
Thomas Molony Billy Karen was the silent partner in Bikini Kill
He probably doesn't give a rats ass because it would be such a stupid thing to get bent outta shape about.
@@jackburton3540, bravo; you're a hero to the people.
Hi Henry what's your view on anarcho punk,C.
Hello nurse.

I wanna see him fight Marilyn Manson.

The Jimi Hendrix machine gun song was in protest of the asbsurd carnage going on in Vietnam. It was a bring the troops back home song.
