    more water and less pigment, Jackie :D Yes these are watercolors...have seen reviews of these paints...they are pretty awesome. Try the pastel pink and pastel blue for a nice purple. Your red has too much orange undertone

    • @siliinnorway
      @siliinnorway 2 года назад +19

      Exactly this. You need magenta and blue to make purple since red also has yellow in it, hence you end up with browm

    • @ACWells13
      @ACWells13 2 года назад +5

      This is what I was going to say! You could see when she was diluting the crimson that it was turning orange- way too much yellow pigment in there to make purple!

    • @samscatsandcrochet
      @samscatsandcrochet 2 года назад +8

      Exactly. Since yellow is across from purple on the color wheel, any yellow in the red or the blue will muddy the resulting purple. You want to avoid any red that leans to orange or blue that leans to green when mixing the two for a brighter purple.

    Definitely look into how paint colors mix, it isn't the same as you'd expect from just the idea of red + blue = purple. A lot of paints magenta is closer to the "red" you use for mixing colors than a traditional red that we think of.

    I believe these paints are more dye-based rather than most higher level watercolors which are pigment based. They are totally great for what you are doing but may stain and also may fade if you have them in sunlight for too long.

    It was so nice seeing you relax and enjoy trying something new, and I think you did a great job! Even though it wasn't the purple you wanted, I think it ended up so earthy and lovely in the final painting. Colour theory can be misleading to the uninitiated. Cyan and Magenta make a perfect purple, whereas your typical reds and blues usually make quite a dusky dark greyish purple like the one you created. It was the bane of my purple-loving existence in high school, before I could afford my own paints and only used the school ones, that I could never make a perfect purple haha!

    I found a RUclips channel called Let’s Make Art and they have fantastic watercolor tutorials!! I used to hate watercolor because I just never understood it.
    To be fair I’ve not used the paper paint stuff or the water brush. I feel like that would be a whole different level of learning curve.
    Seriously though, Sarah Cray from Let’s Make Art has an AMAZING way of educating about watercolor! There’s a tutorial series for the basics, not super time consuming at all. PLUS she does children’s projects too, so it’s a less intimidating place to start. So much fun if you really want to try it out!

    Honestly, you're doing just fine with watercolors! I started off messing around just like you're doing, but in coloring books. Color mixing in practice is really weird to learn at first. I think the pink + blue might be a better combination for purple. In watercolor, there's basically warm primaries and cool primaries, and they can be used to mix a lot more colors. The red and the blue you were using essentially neutralized each other to make that grey. If you're not up for learning all about color mixing right away, just try another color from the color family and see if it gets you closer to what you want. Oh, and just change one color at a time, and stick to one of the original colors you picked. Hope this makes sense. Also with the waterbrush, if you want to take it with you anywhere, you can clean it with a paper towel or a cloth and squeezing the barrel a little bit at a time to clean the bristles. Seriously though, just have fun! ☺

      Another thing I will add is some of these are already blended pigments and since you don't know what they are it's hard to predict how they will react to each other.

    Emma Jane Lefebvre is an amazing watercolor artist & has a TON of tutorials (her on youtube) ranging from basics to more advanced techniques.
    As someone who ends up bedbound a lot, I love her... while it's admittedly more difficult to use watercolors while in bed, I still managed, and even improved quite a bit just by utilizing what she taught!
    She's definitely worth looking up and watching if learning how to watercolor is desired! (And, she teaches which colors make "mud" and which make gorgeous colors).
    It's all based on this: two "cool-toned" or two "warm-toned" colors work well together, but a cool tone and a warm tone will create a muddy version of what you want. Your red had too much "warmth" with the orange undertones to go with that cool-tone blue. Don't be harsh on yourself for an honest beginner's issue! Wet-on-wet is also super hard to master. Add in the difficulty of using a water-brush instead of traditional watercolor paint brushes (which tend to "hold" more liquid in the bristles), and ... you well, you get it lol. You did AMAZING, tbh.
    I've wanted to play with Vivia paints, but just haven't justified the cost to myself for my "dabbling".
    Loved this video, Jackie, and wish I could gift you the "free time" I have.

    You were ending up with brown instead of purple because the red you chose was an orangey red and the blue was also yellow leaning, so you’d always end up with a brown as you’re basically mixing a red and blue that both lean yellow. You needed to chose a red and a blue that were more primary to get a true purple (or mix a warm blue with a cool red alternately).

    Make sure when you’re mixing, you’re paying attention to the undertone of the colors. You mixed a “cool” blue with a “warm” red, so the resulting purple came out muddier than it seemed that you intended. Most “mixing” watercolor sets include 2 yellows, 2 blues, and 2 reds specifically because it includes a warm and cool undertone version of each color. This goes into color theory if you’re interested.

    Hi Jackie!
    I'm no colorwheel expert, but I think the reason you found it so hard to create a good purple is you were trying to mix RGB colors. Art on paper, printed or otherwise made with inks and paints, uses CMYK colors.
    RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is how the cones in our eyes detect lightwaves, and also the color model used on computer screens. RGB is an "additive" color model, in which white is the combination of all primary colored lights and black is the absence of light.
    CMYK refers to the ink plates used in standard color printing: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black).
    CMYK is a subtractive color model, and works by layering colors on a lighter, usually white, background. The ink reduces/subtracts the light that would otherwise be reflected, so white is the natural color of the paper, and black results from a full combination of colors.
    In the RGB model, mixing red and blue makes purple. That's correct.
    But in the CMYK model, magenta and cyan make purple, while red is a mix of magenta and yellow (add more yellow to reach orange) and blue is a deeper cyan (either concentrated/layered cyan pigment, or a mix of cyan and black). That's why if you mix red and blue ink, you end up with brown or gray instead.

    This is adorable! it's cool to see you enjoy yourself!. The purple didn't work not because you don't know your colors, but because you used the wrong red! One thing I learned in art school was that even primary colors have variations, and if you want to create a beautiful secondary color you need to be aware of that. Purple is a cool color, which means yo need a cooler red to mix with a warmer blue to create a pretty purple!
    Same goes with other secondary colors, you need a cool yellow and a warm blue to create a nice green. I hope that makes sense! Watercolors are very difficult but they're my fave technique and def worth trying!

    Also, to make a good watercolour purple with really dark red and a normal blue you should use only a tiny bit of red with a lot of blue. You can get pastelness by adding a little bit of white which you didn’t have but you an replace that with the happy yellow. The key to making a good color is to go slow.

    Oh I backed these when they just started out in kickstarter, they are great fun and very portable indeed! And yes, they are watercolors!
    If you wanted a pastel purple you definitely need to start with light blues and reds. The thing with watercolor pigments is that as you mix pigments together, you end up with very dull, blackish colors. So you’ll definitely want to use light colors, and also use less pigment.

    these are in fact watercolours. I had a set of these, but because they reactivate very easily, I don't like them as much as my other watercolours :)
    For someone who doesn't have much experience with watercolour I would recommend you use a regular paint brush, as it's easier to control how much water you have on your brush, because a waterbrush always has some waterflow, which makes it hard to be consistent. Also, I find it hard to mix a purple using red and blue. It's easier when you have a magenta or permanent rose pigment to mix into your blue :)
    And my No. 1 Tip: don't be afraid to experiment with your watercolours.

    I paint with water colour all the time and what I learnt from is this no wrong way to use it really. It's up to preference on how to use it and it's quite flexible in my opinion ☺️
    But I recommend to go to light to dark when painting because it's easier to build up the colour and shadows, other than that I say play with the paint and find a way you enjoy to paint with it

    Your muddy color mix when trying to make the purple could be the particular pigment mixes in the colors. Some just don't react well together. It might have something to do with the high concentration of pigment required for the sheets to work. Since purple is a cool tone you might want to start with your blue and mix small amount of a really light red. Like with your pink paint.
    The wet on wet is a really nice try! My advice is to start with light washes of color and build up your layers after to avoid dark patches. Start on your edges and drag it in to unpainted areas to make a gradient avoiding areas already with paint so you don't get those lines where they touch. You want to work quick because if part of it dries while doing wet on wet you get patches.

    When you started mixing, I was reminded of my favorite childhood story "The Color Kittens" an old little golden book that I've had forever and still read to my son all taped up and faded.
    It was great to see you try something different and experiment and create! ❤❤❤❤

    So happy to see you relaxing with art in your comfy NerdEJackie form. This looks beautiful and has so much potential. I’m also really glad you have put mail unboxing compilations here on RUclips, as someone who doesn’t have Instagram. I actually debated getting it just for your content.
    As for your recent announcement, as a fairly salty ADHDer myself, I will be trying to scrounge up $29.

    I really have fun watching your video. I'm studying art in university, and I'm really into watercolor. I have this product and it's gorgeous but you have to know that they have produce two other palette (one with glitter effects) and they also have notebook. The paper is thick and perfect for watercolor!!

    Finally got to watch this and oh my! I now have a mighty need xD. I've always enjoyed watercoloring, but never got the chance to really get into it (among other things because it can be a bit expensive to get started).
    I like seeing you get creative and showing stuff you care for. If you want and have the time, keep posting your creativeness 💜.

    Less water, smaller amounts ( like dots) of the paint or thin lines around the edge. it will bleed and flow where the water is. Trick is when you wet your area to paint , lift the paper, and you should see a shine but not a puddle. So if the water is dripping off the paper when you tilt is , dab gently with paper towel and reapply a small amount of water. Always, always less is more. I learned from another Canadian RUclips @EmmaJaneLefebvrewatercolour She lives in Ontario and coincidentally also used to be a teacher. BTW I love your sense of adventure and joy when trying anything new or old. Joy is what arts and crafts are all about. ❤❤❤❤

    My old heart likes this "2014-in-spirit" channel. Gonna buy that awesome salt shaker set for my awesome gf. It's honestly surprising me that the colour swatch doesn't match by now. Would totally love to see you work more with watercolours. I'm working on learning them myself, and I already have your other channel's videos on loop while I draw sometimes so....

    The problem is you used a cool blue and a warm red. The warm red leans toward orange and has a little yellow in it, the blue leans toward turquoise and has a little green in it. That tiny bit of yellow in the red will give you mud when mixed with blue. The tiny bit of green in the blue will give you mud when mixed with red. It's a really great way to make neutrals/grays/browns. To make a true purple you need a cool red, such as one made from PV19, Permanent Rose or Permanent Magenta. Add the cool red to a warm or neutral blue such as ultramarine, or french ultramarine and you'll get a beautiful purple.

    I 've got the basic set of the viviva color sheets from a scrawlrbox and love them. Just bought the spring set last week, can't wait for it to arrive. Little tip: The label boxes are actually for swatching on them. This way you always have your swatches with you.
