This video made me realize that I've never really brainstormed any of my stories before, let alone my MCs! I usually get an inspiration for a story and just think about it for a long time, hashing things out in my head. This video was really helpful in teaching me how to brainstorm, which sounds so funny coming from someone who's been writing since they were 6!

I realize this series is long past complete and I enjoyed it for the most part. I just hope that if you do this again, and I hope you do, that you make it a video series and not a live stream series. It's extremely difficult to watch a replay of because so much of the video has nothing to do with the experiment. It's talking and it's interacting with viewers about topics that really aren't part of the series. I think had you taken the footage and edited out anything that had nothing to do with the core of the experiment it would have been a much more popular videos series. Having said that, I still thank you both though for the time and effort put into it.

Maybe the sisters are indeed twins, but there's a prophecy or curse or something that had a specific wording that there only could to be one child, so they kept the first-born child and gave away the other to a monastary far away, or some other place, in order to pretend like there was just one child. And the second-born sister as she grows up, suddenly realises she has powers of some kind that she didn't know about, maybe her powers "awaken" once she gets in contact with her sister again after many years.
Maybe the monastary she was sent to thought the prophecy would only end in disaster and therefore sent the second-born sister to kill the other in order to stop the prophecy from happening. If the parents shielded the first-born from the world in order to just train her and/or keep her safe, the monastary could be unaware that the one they sent to kill her is the twin.
The first-born is confident in her use of magic or shapeshifting and other powers, but are maybe scared of the outside world. The other can be scared of the powers she is discovering, and she also ends up being the most powerful of the two sisters. One sister is then more focused on discovering the world, while the other is focused on discovering her powers and how they work.
This was a bit all over the place, (English is not my native language so I apologise for strange grammar too) but I thought about this when waking up this morning afte the stream last night, and had to get the idea out of my system. Really looking forward to hearing what you decide next week!

I am a 53 year old first time author. The book is in my head my ideas are floating around and I am right now just at the beginning of this video. But I will say that my protagonist goes for a tarot reading with a very old haggard woman. This woman first card out is the death card. That is how my story is going to begin. My protagonist panics. It is going to be young adult fantasy

Latecomer, but the twins being a different race isn't too odd. In Tolkien's mythos, Elrond and Elros were half-elf, half-human, and Elrond chose his elf side while Elros chose his human blood, founding the line of the Dunedain (and becoming ancestor to Aragorn). Just to give an example of halfblood twins in fantasy.

I am so late coming to this (2 years) but I still wish that I could get the outline notes you guys created and go through it now. I signed up for the newsletter but I couldn't find where to get the outline at all the stages. Even if I can't get those, I am going to go through all these Save the Cat vids and try to learn and create my own outline. Thank you both for all you do to help other writers and us first-timers who are trying to make a writing dream come true.
Some of this reminds me of Three Dark Crowns (triplets with powers that fight to the death for the crown)

I think I may use Save the Cat for book 2 in Half Angel Urban Fantasy series. Night of the Half Angel was more introducing the world and the key players, it's sequel Dawn of the Half Angel is for sure a "heroes journey"

You want two main, crucial characters, in part so you may each write one of them, which is a cool idea.
But maybe that just adds up to: One of you is going to write the hero, and one of you is going to write the antagonist. No need to get involved with sisters or twins, especially if they are both on the same side, so to speak. I think I would consider jettisoning the twins idea and probably the sisters idea.
I have thought about some of the sister-related issues in connection with a story I actually called “The Sister.” I started out with twins, and ultimately rejected that. But they are not co-protagonists-one of them is killed, and it turns into a vengeance-type story.
Also, as you know, Brody distinguishes between “generic” themes and the “beat sheet” type of theme. I think ultimately you will want to create a beat-sheet theme that is a well-defined one-sentence proposition. Personally, though, I wouldn’t worry about the theme(s) until much later on.

wish I'd seen this when you two were actually doing it but I'm finding it very helpful and interesting even now
im a year late... but it would have been cool for both sisters to be half half but only one sister has the ability to shape shift. Humans hate the Shape shifters and there for to protect the 1 sister they separated them at birth. Humans fear the shape shifters and have brought them to near extinction. So the more human sister fears/hates shapeshifters until she meets her sister that is a shapeshifter. So you can also have the sister that is a shapeshifter fear and hate humans that kill her kind. However their opinions of humans and shapeshifters chance once they meet each other, and built an external conflict from there

Yeah! Bethany and I both loved that idea too but we both have dragons/creatures that can shift into dragons in our other WIPs so we might not go with this idea here sadly....

Sisters that are put against each other.... each raised by different people.... maybe one with magic power and one bounty hunter vigilante robin hood warrior girl?
