I’ve been a media entrepreneur for 20 years, and the problem is not, as Chris Harris says, that “everyone can broadcast to anyone” on social media. And there’s actually quite a lot of money in journalism. The problem is 1) Advertising has moved to Google and Facebook since they offer better targetting and a one-stop for advertisers. 2) Because the internet was brand new in the 90s, no one could really charge for content initially, and a culture of free digital content took roots with media users. It is finally changing, and paywalls are becoming acceptable, but it’s a long process. 3) A widespread system for micropayments is still missing from the internet. Online transactions are still expensive and cumbersome, so a media outlet can’t, say, charge 20p for you to read an article or watch a Vice documentary. The subscription model rules, and it favours a few bigger outlets.

Compairing Vice to Buzzfeed is a bit unfair. Buzzfeed never made one even okay documentary, when Vice has had some of the best reportage of the last ten years. Sure they had their lowpoints but they still producess some of the best online news prodcasts.
As soon as they started fundraising in there videos I knew something was up.. this is really sad and I hope they can still continue giving us exceptional content whatever the outcome
A company with dubious journalistic integrity and ethics, specialising in puff pieces - it is good that they have gone down. Speaking of ethics, perhaps we should be referring to the BBC as "NYT East", given the BBC's reliance on NYT "reporting" and constantly acting as the propaganda mouthpiece of the US Democrats.
Vice was great back in the day and I loved how personal and passionate their journalism was. You could tell the journalists were passionate because they would go to such lengths and put themselves into danger just to get to the truth. My problem, however, was that they became too radical and even extreme left-leaning...to the point they just spread activism rather than the objective truth. It was all about 'feelings' rather than actual news reporting. I'm not sad they failed, I'm happy that such a media corporation spreading such useless stuff is failing.
I watched a lot of Vice when it had cool indi documentaries on. For me, it sold out when it went to TV and all of a sudden the content seemed to go for quantity over quality.
vice lost because they just weren';t producing content quick enough to get people going back. They didn't place ads like the tacky mainstream channels. they did paid editorials, so they'll make a article or video around giving a brand exposure. websites like daily mail gets tonnes of returning visitors and a lot of shares, they can basically gossip about latest influncer gossips and stuff, make a good headline and get people in. Vice was trying to do higher quality stuff and just couldn't compete for people's attention. Add to that, a lot of stuff they were product was not for mass consumption but for fringe audiences.
confirmation bias. I agree. I got a bit of nostalgia when i saw VICE using their old longform format. But it just didn't hit the same You can see the breakage, from reports seeming haphazardly edited, to well crafted narratives with ulterior motives. Honestly, my two cents... their audience got old. Young impressionable millennials are in their 30s now; got that MBA, double masters, with a minor in history... and they know better than to get their news from VICE. VICE got outclassed. Be honest, journo degree isnt hard. Which is competing with history majors and econ majors for attention. I dont care what some soyboy thinks about Ukraine. I need facts, not a propaganda piece. If i was VICE Executive Officer... i'd have taught my staff Spanish. This would all be tragic, if it wasn't poetic justice. Couldn't have happened to a better company. Vice is that teacher that dropped your lowest homework and curved your grades. Millennials are realizing that's why they lose to the kid that took college calc in high school. Facts matter, reality has a low tolerance for bulllshit. TL;DR: if you stopped watching VICE rn, would you miss anything that you couldnt get anywhere else? I meet professors, really cool dudes, too shy to stand in front of a camera, but give him burger and five Heinekens, and he can condense his entire semester long course in 5 hours. All of it peer reviewed.
The daily mail is just as bad. One day they're saying eggs are good for you and the next they're saying eggs kill you. All these companies are the same. They will lie to you to make their money. Can't trust any of them. Vice deserves it as well after what they did to the tate brothers.
Kinda sad but not surprised. I'll miss the sense of adventure some of their documentaries had, such as Shane Smith's siberian train journey to uncover North Korean work camps. I'll also miss a lot of Isobel Yeung's work, as she was a very talented journalist. It's bittersweet to see times change.
Their “legacy” is already based off on something else's, their hitherto-uncredited spiritual-ancestor ever since one of the Occidental Messiahs in "iHindoo IT Cell", Gavin McInnes( no salutation!) was booted-out - leading way to their reincarnation in 2007-ish.

Being too political and too biased is what led to this. One of the reasons RUclips removed the dislike button was so that people and networks like Vice could continue lying to the average listener who doesnt have one clue how to think Autonomously but thinks Vice videos are cool and "Refreshing". Ive been seeing this coming from Vice for the last few months, Vice's social media presence REALLY SUCKS BAD.
They started off as an incredible news channel and maintained a great reputation in the consumer news community, but eventually they started to fall off and you could tell that a lot of their funding was swaying them "too far left" which turned their news into a bias source of information. Overall, I could definitely see this coming because they were an independent news organization and after a while of being directed by their investors to do irrelevant news topics, they lost viewers. You can't just have any old investor come in and run your news channel. If you're being funded to cover stories that don't relate to what your channel represents, then you're self-sabotaging your own organization at that point.
I am really sad to learn this, it is a bit of a shock for me. I thought that they might be over extending themselves. Like with the presenter, for me it was Crimea 2014 and the ground breaking journalism of Szymon Ostrovski for example.
I really hope they survive. As a foreign consumer of Vice media, it is refreshing to see that they are self-aware of all the “vices“ and biases of the anglo speaking rich countries. You can see that they try to have a worldly style, and generally, they can achieve it.
Maybe VICE shouldn't have purchased all those offices and minded their budget. Overspending is the issue. People are spending to much during a time they should be saving.

The philosophy of the rich and the poor is this: "the rich invest their money and spend what is left. The poor spend their money and invest what is left".
Hi there, I don't know anything about investing and I'm looking to invest, any help? As well who can I reach out to?
I do see it that forex and crypto trading is one of the profitable money exchange services that elevates investors and their financial status.
I will always recommend Expert Sarah Wright to anyone who wishes to invest in forex/crypto trading, her strategy is working for me. I'm making good profits from bitcoin trading
She's awesome she has managed my investment so well and my weekly returns are mind blowing.
Having monitored my portfolio performance, Sarah has made me a jaw dropping $370k from just the past two quarters alone. I have learned why these experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market
Vice was awesome. They had a completely different way of approaching journalism. The Vice guide to North Korea was my favorite. It was doomed the moment shane smith left. RIP vice.
Vice was good once upon a time. I remember the Russian Roulette series with Simon Ostrovsky.... They did some other series sending reporters in deep into warzones. After a while they did some interesting stories, a little like Louis Theroux esq.
Few years back they changed and the content became really shit.
Roman Roy was right all along!
A failing business with good assets.
Motherboard was just a hate outlet and vice became just as ignorant when they lost gavin
Says the guy with a german hate symbol as his avatar? 😂😂
@@operator9858 I'm glad you recognise it's a German hate symbol that the Ukrainian army use
Sad they're gone, Vice mews used to do hardcore journalism when going to North Korea.
Young people now don't want news they want memes and to be told what to think.
shame, their war coverage is always top notch
I agree
They did some great reporting.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@djbbdfggh Not saying it was all gold.
People here so sympathetic to Vice, true that their past video and journalism is top notch but now Vice had fall into talking more about US wokeism

At some point Vice did start to spin out so much bullshit content that one was beginning to wonder how was this viable. I guess we now know it's not. Should've had more focus on what they're best at - gonzo reporting from active conflicts and the underworld, instead of reviewing 30 types of noodles from some japanese vending machine.
This piece misses completely that the content of Vice changed. As many commenters are pointing out.
ashame, but for me they were hit or miss from the beginning and never truly took hold
“Ashame[ _sic_ ]” of what?
Are you sure you weren't referring to yourselves?
@@maazkalim f u talkin bout bruh
Vice used to have a free magazine. Glossy, high quality, good content and great photography.
Though I lost my interest to the majority of topics Vice tried to cover, but I will never forget their amazing on ground reporting and ivestigations.
GO WOKE GO BROKE
Everything is uncertain
To the WOKE....yes.
Good to see a respectful assessment of the challenge facing vice
Not that the British State broadcaster has got much of a choice.
it hurts a lot to see vice news to be facing such crisis
This is what happens when you spew propaganda instead of facts
Man , their documentaries are my favorite. Sad to hear about this
Go woke go broke….
The nostalgia from I get from some vice documentaries is crazy there will never be anything like vice again
That first sentence sounded so smug!
That's good news. They were getting too biased with their reports.
when their office in Brooklyn expanded in 2011, it wiped out a bunch of DIY-arts spaces
I'm glad these sort of channel's go back curpt
My heart is breaking. VICE News has always brought us honest and non-biased news.
ha ha.....
Go woke, go broke
It’s the VC treadmill. It’s just simply not compatible with the rate of return they were expecting
I watched a lot of Vice when it had cool indi documentaries on. For me, it sold out when it went to TV and all of a sudden the content seemed to go for quantity over quality.
and nothing of value was lost
Vice should unironically cover their own bankruptcy and tell the story of the Shane Smith selling out and Fox bleeding out their soul
LOL 😂
FOX® “bleeding out their soul” is relevant, how?
Also..
Who did Mr Shane "crass-tongued pro" Smith exactly “sold out to”?
ngl, that would be a cool send-off.
Didn’t vice receive a billion investment from legacy media?
vice lost because they just weren';t producing content quick enough to get people going back.
But it just didn't hit the same
You can see the breakage, from reports seeming haphazardly edited, to well crafted narratives with ulterior motives.
You're wrong actually, they went woke, and went broke.
The daily mail is just as bad. One day they're saying eggs are good for you and the next they're saying eggs kill you. All these companies are the same. They will lie to you to make their money. Can't trust any of them. Vice deserves it as well after what they did to the tate brothers.
Those documentaries w that Indian dude going deep into the Congo were the best.
Andrew Tate must be LOVING this 😂
there is a old say i think fits pretty well, get woke go something something, i cant remember
3:26 Why is there a ninja casually walking on the white house roof? :)
Yes, Isobel's work is amazing!
Vice didn't filter anything and that's why people loved them
Well it's down to the decline in both quantity and quality of content
Are you one of those cable-news pundits from FOX® Business or globally-accessible CNBC® network?
Really hope the legacy lives on
Their “legacy” is already based off on something else's, their hitherto-uncredited spiritual-ancestor ever since one of the Occidental Messiahs in "iHindoo IT Cell", Gavin McInnes( no salutation!) was booted-out - leading way to their reincarnation in 2007-ish.

Vice was great, went wokeish and lost most people including me, it’s not rocket science to figure out what happened
I am very sorry to see them go.
I love Vice & Vice news. Means I Absolutely Love them. Love the way they works, the content they make, the facts and ground truth the put out to the world and damn their courage. They did an absolutely amazing job. I am a huge fan of Vice. But never saw this coming. I'm deeply saddened.
They became way too woke, so the rest of the world gets fed up of them.
I'm sure their horoscope department saw it coming
was funny seeing Andrew Tate make fun of the vice reporter who also works for BBC
The Murdoch deal was the beginning of the end ... I found them back in the day before RUclips, Shane's trip to the DPRK was the stuff of legends
Vice went so woke
When they tried to shut down Top G...... This what you get
They started off as an incredible news channel and maintained a great reputation in the consumer news community, but eventually they started to fall off and you could tell that a lot of their funding was swaying them "too far left" which turned their news into a bias source of information.
Who'd have thought that Vice turning their focus to nonsense and drivel would turn out to be a poor choice.
I am really sad to learn this, it is a bit of a shock for me. I thought that they might be over extending themselves. Like with the presenter, for me it was Crimea 2014 and the ground breaking journalism of Szymon Ostrovski for example.
excellent series i remember watching in the basement of my college apartment
Oh dear how sad.
Who's next? The BBC?
I really hope they survive. As a foreign consumer of Vice media, it is refreshing to see that they are self-aware of all the “vices“ and biases of the anglo speaking rich countries. You can see that they try to have a worldly style, and generally, they can achieve it.
well people spend more time on TikTok. Long videos are getting less popular now
they have great resources and cover topics other media can't, its unfortunate to say but they did their best.
whoaaa i was waiting when is it coming
Maybe VICE shouldn't have purchased all those offices and minded their budget. Overspending is the issue. People are spending to much during a time they should be saving.
What a shame!!!...,loved the investigative journalism they provided on topics and issue that mainstream news media wouldnt cover.
