As a US citizen, supporting the US authorities against Assange is like saying you want to be kept in the dark and not know the shady stuff they do. Which is pretty much the opposite of democracy and freedom..?
It is a double-edged sword, because you can't make your tactics public to the enemy. That's kind of just common sense. That said, as history has shown, humans cannot be trusted (especially your own government). There is just too much corruption and abuse of power. Complicated thing to sort out.
Not to be the devils advocate but some of the stuff that was leaked actually hurt America. As in information we didn’t want enemy foreign countries to get their hands on. It’s a tough topic but it is in Americas best interest to go after these people.
Pompeo just sounds like a bully who's upset that the nerd showed his dirty texts. The US can't play fair when it comes to war and they don't want their citizens to see what they do with their military , but the us citizens deserve to know. It's the lack of transparency that angers me the most.

The issue with the U.S. is that we literally began as treasonous, violent, freedom-screaming rebels (or "terrorists" now). The only reason this country exists right now is because people literally waged bloody war against the government in charge at the time. People seem to completely whoosh on this these days, and they think everything should just be handled peacefully through the same system that keeps people fucked. I'm not saying things like MAGA and raiding the capitol are in that same vein (those were horribly misguided), but it does seem fascinating to me how complacent and docile people are now in fighting back against tyranny, corruption, corporate dystopia, etc.

From James Madison's own notes going over what he said:
"... In all civilized Countries the people fall into different classes having a real or supposed difference of interests. There will be creditors & debtors, farmers, merchants & manufacturers. There will be particularly the distinction of rich & poor. It was true as had been observed. (by Mr. Pinkney) we had not among us those hereditary distinctions, of rank which were a great source of the contests in the ancient Governments as well as the modern States of Europe, nor those extremes of wealth or poverty which characterize the latter. We cannot however be regarded even at this time, as one homogeneous mass, in which every thing that affects a part will affect in the same manner the whole. In framing a system which we wish to last for ages, we should not lose sight of the changes which ages will produce. *An increase of population will of necessity increase the proportion of those who will labor under all the hardships of life, & secretly sigh for a more equal distribution of its blessings.* These may in time outnumber those who are placed above the feelings of indigence. Or from John Lansing's notes of what Madison said at that time:
"The Advantages of Government cannot be extended equally to all ... Distinctions will always exist-that of Debtor and Creditor-Property had made Distinctions in Europe before a Nobility was created-Inequality of Property will produce the same Distinctions here ..."
