- A Side By Side Comparison of a 10 Year Old Deering Goodtime Banjo and a Brand New One. The Biggest Difference & Major Sound Quality Improvement was with the 3 Ply Rim Vs. The Multi Ply Rim. Other than That, The Rest is Mostly Cosmetic.
My 10 year old Goodtime stays in Tune Just as Good as My New One. The Quality of Deering Products are Incredible.
Thank you! I have been searching for the differences between these two. Well done.
I think the gumby head adds tone ,I like.also Diadario medium bronze strings .
Thank you so much for taking the time and making this video. I’m new to banjo and wanted something lightweight, but going on eBay I couldn’t tell what was new or old… You’re a Saint. ❤❤❤
I ended up getting a Gumby (Good time 2 - resonator) with a hard case, doesn’t even looked used, extra strings, lots of picks, leather strap for $499 free shipping! I’m planning on taking off the resonator and using it as my practice banjo since it will only weigh about 4 lbs. I’ll see how heavy it is when I get it and go from there. I appreciate ya!! ❤❤❤
Scored a used Gumby head that was only used in a commercial. It’s unplayed and in perfect shape. I couldn’t get my money out fast enough! I paid $250 for it and absolutely love it. I feel these Gumby heads may be a future collectible.
“Scored?” More like “stole.” 😂😂😂 What a bargain! Congratulations - do you still play?
@@chicksgrowtoosure do! I just added a spillway dam bridge today actually. Sounds much warmer. The Goodtime is my newest banjo; I collect early banjos. My oldest is a 1880 Buckbee paddle head, I have 7 antique banjos, they are all players.
I ordered a gumby head online in 2009 but received the newer style one, maybe because they didn't have any more gumbys in stock. I was a bit disappointed because I liked the look of the gumby head and dot inlays a lot better than the new head and bowtie inlays. The 3 ply rim has delaminated in a few places but it still plays good.
Thank u for such an honest comparrison. So many people act like they can hear all these mystical things from an instrument (ya know cuz it was forged by elves or some crap)
Bit in reality for most of us that enjoy banjo but are not superstar skill level don't hear some of the mystical properties, we just know its fun and sounds good☺
Your Welcome, Keep on Pickin' and Grinnin'
“Forged by elves” totally stealing that line… 😂😂😂
Thanks for the comparision it's very helpful
Very helpful ,thanks.
Nice collection of banjos man.
Thanx Dan, for the comparison, but l have the older Gumby head good time, and l personally would not trade it for a newer one. The head stock is a classic, and deering does not make them anymore therefore it is worth a lot more than the $400.00 dollars that l paid for it. I consider my Goodtime Deering banjo a collectors piece.
I actually Sold the Newer One and Kept the Gumby Head for the same reasons You say. I have about 8 Banjos now and the Gumby is My # 1 Go To ,
... I Play it Every Night.
Thank you! I’m a beginner and bought a used one, (with a resonator) with a hard case, extra strings, picks, leather strap for $499 free shipping. I was initially disappointed knowing that I bought an old one, but now I’m happy! Thank you both so much. ❤❤❤ (I actually bought it because it was lightweight and was going to remove the resonator.)
Interesting! I just bought a banjo and it has the multiply rim and the the plain style head but it has enclosed tuners. there seems to be some extra holes on the back of the head so they may have been replaced. The membrane on the pot seems to have been replaced as well. it shows wear and tear but no logo.
Fine review. Thank you and good job.
+Jeff Davis Thank You For the Kind Words, glad You Liked it.
Does one have fretboard side markers while the other does not?
I'm considering getting another one and turning the older one into a fretless.
Also, new fret position markers on the side of the neck.....
I have been SEARCHING for those banjo bridges. What was the mans name again?
It is called a "Spillway Dam Bridge" , made By Don New.. He Sells them on The Banjo Hangout Site and on Ebay too. Excellent Product.
Do you think the rim design is worth the upgrade?
I Personally Love My Old Deering and for my level of Playing, I didn;t see much difference and in fact I Sold My Newer Deering but it's matter a personal taste
MrDanoconnor the only reason i was considering it was to tear the frets our of the older one and fill the wholes with wood filler. I've been playing since about 2013 now. keep at it, its easy although different tuning throw me at first.
If You want a Fretless Banjo and intend to play mostly Clawhammer and Frailing Style I recomend a PRUST FRETLESS BANJO, I own 2 and absolutely Love them. They are Minstrel Style Banjos with Tack Heads. I have videos Posted of them but you can go to His Web Site, Google Eric Prust Fretless Banjos. Cost me $230 Delivered for the Basic Fretless Tackhead. He is a Great Person to deal with too.
Good Luck... "Book 'em DanO'"
