Fronius and BYD Battery Backup - Blackout Real-world Test

  • A recent weeklong power outage saw my family and I perform the ultimate real-world test on our Fronius inverter and BYD battery backup system.
    The outage occurred between Christmas and NYE during a time when we had family visiting meaning there were 14 people in the house all vying for the valuable energy.
    In this video I walk through the experience both good and the bad and things we learned along the way.
    Specifications
    Inverter: Fronius Gen24 Symo 3 phase / 10kw
    Battery: BYD Premium HVM, 5 modules, 13.5 kw/h storage and 6kw maximum charge/discharge
    Panels: Sunpower, 15kw

    Good video, thanks. I have a very similar setup. 2x22kwh towers 10kw Gen 24 and 6kw symo. We used to have a lot of blackouts, a little improved now. Of interest maybe that there are two settings to reserve battery in the gen24. One is with the power on, and one in backup mode. The first one when reached the system with go back to full grid. I have this set at 40%. The second is to protect the battery and that is set at 7%. This way I know I have enough to get me through a night blackout. The other thing I did was put a dropout contactor on the aircon, oven and HW booster so when power goes out they dont overload the system. (system is in the shed remote from house). anyway great video. learnt some new things.

    Very clear and precise video.
    Good information to be learn Fronius should share your experience.
    The manuals are some time too confusing.
    We share similar setup, Fronius Symo, Byd, Unifi and the Hass to connect all information.

    I'm definitely going with a DIY system using a used 30kWh Leaf battery. There is a video online and forum on how to do this. Less expensive, more reliable and much larger capacity.

    Great rundown of the system operating for long duration blackout when monitored. We have 16 same setup unmonitored. One problem I don’t think you 22:49 encountered was a black start. This is when BYD reaches 5% during discharge and shuts down. Fronius and BYD both agree system will not recover when sun comes up until grid power returns. Ever see this?

    You can try a microgrid setup and you will not regret it. It's usually made with a Victron setup with small 48 V batteries with its own switchover capabilities as a UPS would do and will provide 230/ 400V 50Hz for the main Fronius unit when the grid goes down. (of course, the Fronius inverter will treat the situation as a normal grid-tied operation).

    This is very interesting. I was having a discussion with a mate who lives on the mid north coast of NSW, he believes he will be subject to blackouts in the coming years. He decided to not go with a battery, but instead has had an 8 KVA Gen-set installed. Working on the theory that having an old school power source . So during the day he has solar, and at night the generator. Even without sun he can fall,back on the generator.

      It’s a very good solution. Lots of people around here do that. Really as long as you can keep the fridges running! Just make sure the inverter can cold boot without grid.

    That's the limitation with three phase. I have a 6kw single phase inverter so I have been able to work it right up to 6kw draw from the batteries.
    System works fine during blackouts but If the batteries run low I isolate the system and revert to a generator.
    Not worth buying extra storage if it's only going to get used 2% of the year.

    Thank you for putting out this video. I recently installed a single phase Fronius Gen24 10kW inverter. At the moment I am doing my research into battery storage. I am finding it hard to justify BYD when compared to the Powerwall (and even Sonnen). Your video is very informative on the points to be aware of the Fronius-BYD system. The Powerwall seems to have more pluses. The BYD option does not seem to be significantly cheaper either with the Fronius Hybrid inverter. (Installers that I have spoken with have tended to suggest going with Powerwall even though they install Fronius inverters.)
    Thanks also for sharing your WiFi router setup with a UPS.

    Great video. I have the single phase Fronius inverter 10Kw with BYD battery (installed this week). Excellent tips on how to manage the system, especially the ups for internet backup. I notice when when you showed the fronius dashboard that even when you are generating solar energy and charging the battery, now and then it pulls energy from the grid (small between 10w to 100w). I thought it was a fault of my inverter, but it just seems this is how fronius inverters work. Cheers.

      They all work like this, they try to keep the voltage on the house side just a pip above grid, so there will be some leakage, but in the few MS it takes for it to read and adjust output loads and push it over or under. Powerwall does this too.

    you can wifi connect locally to your fronius gen 24 that would have sorted out your issue with the lockout at night, use your finger to swipe the white light and it generates its own wifi signal use the local ip address i dont remember it right now ( have it stored in my phone and you get into the settings screen that way.

    Thanks for this. I'm soon to install the same setup as you most likely. Some very valuable info for my use case. Like you, I have a three phase home supply. Does the Fronius smart meter exist on the same network address as the inverter, or does the inverter / meter both have their own IP? (and also like you, I'll be integrating with Home Assistant. Ha ha, and you use Unifi!! We must be related!)

      Home Assistant connects to the inverter and all data for smart meter etc comes through that. They do show up in HA as separate devices though.

    Hi great video, I have a similar, although smaller setup my self (4.92kwp of solar, 5kw fronius gen24plus and a BYD HVM 11.04kwh ). I intent to go for the off grid smart panel as well as another 2.73kwh of battery module. I have a question though, what was the software you are using to monitor the different aspects of your solar?

      I am using Home Assistant that outputs to a Grafana dashboard. I'm planning a video on it - will see how I go over the next few weeks. That said Home Assistant integrates with Fronius kit super easily and you get some fantastic visualisations and tracking out of the box.

    Hey Jordan,
    I believe the Australian Standards say that the battery has to be minimum 900mm below an eave but your installer has installed them almost up to the eave. Do you know how they were able to do this and comply as I currently have HVM 5 stack and want to go to the 8 stack but due to the above rule can’t.

    Jordan - I feel you'd have been better off with a single phase inverter and all your essential loads moved on to that phase. I'm assuming the only 3 phase device is the air con?

      Induction stove top and car also 3 phase. Main reason was for the car however - in extended outages we can at least get some level or charge up and running. But yes, ultimately for short outages 1 phase would do fine!

    Get a Chinese Deye or similar hybrid inverter for your critical /UPS load. The switching from grid to battery/PV is under 100ms.

      That’s great to hear! For my ups I went with Eaton because I know the brand. But I am not a UPS expert!
