Years ago the Chieftains would play in Toronto at Massey Hall and then go to a pub called Dora Keough's and sit in with the Irish music sessions on Sundays. There were times when there were more musicians than customers. A wonderful time and I miss it.
The hymn tune Kingsfold, which is adapted from SOTCD, sounds like a dirge. I'm an atheist but some hymn tunes appeal to me regardless. For example, Kingsfold is pretty if they speed it up. Here is Kingsfold "sung like a dirge" which I was familiar with before I heard SOTCD: ruclips.net/video/5YeHsap14qg/видео.html SOTCD is much better than the hymn, precisely because the hymn tune is gloomy.
He smiled at me and he says, says he, "That's the gem of Ireland's crown; It's Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann, She's the star of the County Down".
Superb. Listened to it thousands of times. Never get sick of it.

I really love this song. Not the best version of it but by far the most authentic
Beautiful. I think Van's having a right blast here.
The star of the county down
Aye apile of drink and good looking women
Get to the county down boys
This is the first version I learned. It confused me greatly when everyone else sang it like a dirge.
