- This slow, ballad version of "The Star of the County Down" comesfrom the 2001 release of "The Best of Slainte". This gives the song a whole new slant.
This multi-generational band had players whose ages spanned 30 years. They were based out of Tacoma, WA. The band was named "Slainte", which means "Cheers" in Gaelic, because they wanted to play enjoyable, happy music. I do hope that you Enjoy!
Personnel:
Jeff Bremer - concertina, bass
Lawson Dumbeck - guitar
Kent Hooper - whistles
Jean Huskamp - mandolin
Anthea Lawrence - lead vocals, fiddle
Bob McCaffery -Lent - guitars, cittern, vocals
Brynn Starr - fiddle, vocals
This song was played at my mothers funeral. She was born and bred in Banbridge, County Down. A true Colleen. 19.10.2016.
I will do the same. The version I think will be the one the two sisters from Kansas play on fiddle and guitar. Although the whistle/recorder and voice here will be a close second
Sorry for your loss, this is such a fitting song, sang in the old tradition.
Ah....I'm so sorry for your loss. Love this song....
Мир праху . Очень жаль.
I sing this version to my daughter every night as she is falling asleep. I've not heard a better version. I want her to keep her roots strong and to appreciate music. Thank you so much for posting this. Anthea's voice is like none other.

Viva Europe
I cry every time I hear this song
Me too
I am from Serbia, but Irish folklore is my favorite and this song is my favorite song of all time. Greeting for Irish brothers and sisters, respect.

❤ This version is simply delightful! What a voice!
The best version of this song to ever exist. Harmony is essential.
This is so hauntingly beautiful yet sad at the same time.
I'm not Irish but i love this song and it gives me goosebumps for some reason. This version really needs more attention!
A beautiful reflection of a beautiful culture that is fast being destroyed on purpose.
"No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke.." That is my favorite line. I know what it is like to feel like this about a woman.
My favorite version of the song by far
I enjoy this group so much. I wish they had not disbanded. Thank you for stopping by, Moppet
I love this version and Lizzy Hoyt 's version so much, despite their completely opposite style (Lizzy Hoyt's version is quite fast). It's amazing how a song, depends on the speed it's performed, can evoke many different emotions.

Best version of this song!
Now this is how every soul should sing this beautiful song. This is by far the most brilliant version I've ever heard.Thank you so much for sharing :) Peace, Love and Happiness to you !
Lyrics (Slainte version):
Near Banbridge Town, in the County Down
One morning in July,
Down the boreen came a sweet colleen,
And she smiled as she passed me by;
Oh, she looked so sweet from her two bare feet
To the crown of her nut-brown hair,
Such a winsome elf that I pinched myself
To be sure I was really there
I'm from Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay,
And from Galway to Dublin town,
No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen
That I met in the County Down.
As she onward sped I shook my head
And I gazed with a feeling rare,
And I said, says I, to a passer-by,
"Who's the maid with the nut-brown hair?"
He smiled at me, and with pride says he,
"That's the gem of all Ireland's crown,
Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann,
She's the Star of the County Down."
I'm from Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay,
And from Galway to Dublin town,
No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen
That I met in the County Down.
At the harvest fair she'll be surely there
So I'll dress in my Sunday clothes
With my shoes shined bright and my hat just right
Win the heart of the nut-brown Rose.
No pipe I'll smoke, no horse I'll yoke
And my plow will rust and brown,
Till a smiling bride by my own fireside
Sits the Star of the County Down.
I'm from Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay,
And from Galway to Dublin town,
No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen
That I met in the County Down.
I want to cry
Such a beautiful song..
Love this tune. Used to play it on a flute
Anthea used to teach me and my sister fiddle music. She had these great books about the wee folk who lived in the forest (I read them when it was my sister's lesson). I love her singing voice.
you're so lucky! both for having met Anthea and for getting to read such an amazing book =)
BEAUTIFUL
Near Banbridge Town, in the County Down
One morning in July,
Down the boreen came a sweet colleen,
And she smiled as she passed me by;
Oh, she looked so neat from her two bare feet
To the crown of her nut-brown hair,
Such a winsome elf, I pinched myself
To be sure I was really there
CHORUS: Oh, from Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay,
And from Galway to Dublin town,
No maid I've seen like the sweet colleen
That I met in the County Down.
As she onward sped I shook my head
And I gazed with a feeling rare,
And I said, says I, to a passer-by,
"Who's the maid with the nut-brown hair?"
Oh, he smiled at me, and with pride says he,
"That's the gem of all Ireland's crown,

Beautiful version.
This is the one...a sweet waltz...it's 1960 for a moment...thank you.
Amazing! I downloaded their mp3 back in decades ago! Glad to find over here. Thank you! This is the best version!!!
This is mighty. I just listened to 20 videos of people singing this song like they'd win summat if they finished it in under a minute. What I've not found is the lovely version in 3/4 time.
I love this so much…
This is pure gold.

I'm so glad you left your comment. You are a true poet at heart! I also loved the response you got...You all are on top of things even when I'm not. I thank you for this! My best to you and please keep commenting. It's a blessing to read when you are "housebound" and some of my songs have zero comments w/over 1,000 views + a lot of "likes". No one comments. I appreciate you very much, Moppet
After Dark radio brought me here. Great song.
devilix Thank you for coming here. I don't know After Dark radio, but need to look it up. So glad you stopped by to visit. My best to you, Moppet
Yes, After Dark Radio brought me here too. :)
Me too. Was aware of tune, but not this version :)
Matt King Piano I need to thank After Dark Radio! So glad you found this here. I have a Celtic Playlist on my utube Channel which has some neat music. You have to sort through it a bit, but I have some stuff that is pretty rare. If you explore, I hope you find some treasures. My best to you, Moppet
***** Thanks so much for listening & I need to thank After Dark Radio, also. Wishing you a good week, Moppet
p.s. I have a great Celtic Playlist on my utube Channel. You are welcome to explore at any time.
Such a beautiful song! Just amazing!
What wonderful memories!!! Thank you for sharing this story. I really enjoy getting comments and this is a special one. She has one of the most beautiful voices I have heard. Thank you for listening and commenting. My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)

This is beautiful! Thank you:)
How do I find you? Slainte?
I like this line, too - and that they shift to a minor key when they sing it puts a whole new, somewhat creepy feel to it.
@MsAndi63 Thank you and I am so glad you enjoy this! They sing it more as a ballad and I like that. Of course, I like the faster versions also. Greetings from a raining and damp Ohio! The music on your site is so beautiful I just had to join! I am glad you stopped here or I would never had found you! My best to you.
:)
You have given me my "Smile for the Day" in the comments. Thank you so much! Barbara (Moppet)
Enchanting.
+Uttam Paudel so glad you enjoyed. Thanks for letting me know, Moppet

Too bad i don't found this version on spotify 😢😢
best version of this classic song... so beautiful
Very nice music !!
I like it.
Love the tune, none more beautiful fast or slow, 3/4 or 4/4. But the words just don't live up to the lovely melody...unless you were a genuine colleen from the County Down.
ruclips.net/video/B4Mcmdc20s8/видео.html
The tune is 17th century English.
Very nice.
***** Hello. You left a comment a few months ago & I'm just seeing it. Thank you for listening to Star of the County Down. I collect different versions of this song (and a few others) & enjoy hearing the approaches. I'm glad you found this here & appreciate you letting me know that you enjoyed it. My best to you, Moppet
MyMoppet52 Star of the County Down is one of my most favorite songs ever

Enjoyed reading your comment. I love this song, The Queen of Argyll no matter which spelling, She Moves Through The Fair, & a few others. I'm glad to meet someone who loves to find different versions of the same song, also! I will go through & see my other versions of "Star" & send you a link. You've probably heard them all, but sometimes you can find a tidbit here and there. Will do this a bit later tonight. Hope you don't mind. I'm NOT spamming you. If you don't want to look, that's not a problem. Just trash my links. My best, Barbara (aka Moppet)
MyMoppet52 Thank you Barbara, I was raised on Country and Bluegrass ,Living south of Nashville Tennessee, but I love a lot of different kinds of music.

I love bluegrass and old timey fiddle music. Mountain music also. They sort of cross over. Think Tim O'Brien is incredible. Listened to my folks stuff...early bluegrass & Southern Gospel growing up. I have Playlists of all those genres. I'm gonna look for the links & try to post them here...

Sorry, I have only made 4 videos & I messed up and had to make one private. These two aren't traditional. I will go through my library & add making a few more of the versions toward the top of my "to do" list. I have some very lovely versions. Perhaps I have a version you haven't heard. Perhaps not. My best, Barbara
I'm here because of Dayz HellRetex mod cassette tapes.
Que bonita melodía.
Pues si wey nomames :'v
True! that's my favourite line too :-)
Although it goes 1by1 with this part:
"That's the gem of Ireland's crown.
Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann,
She's the star of the County Down."
Which probes it's an ancient tune. If it were a modern song, it would say "that's hot Rosie.McCann@Banns" ... far less poetic :-)
I’m doing this version for a state competition solo I’m so nervous
I am the only Arab person who listens to this music 😂

Great! Like it slightly better in 3/4 though.
1354 views. Well, I am a démocrate and respect majority, but really, sometimes my ancient greek ancestors are proved right when saying "Ουκ εν τω πολλώ το ευ" , which means "The fine is not in the much"
Who is the singer
Where can i find this song With a good quality?
Which is the band that sings?
+MasterZeusHD They disbanded some years ago. They had perhaps 3 albums. I've been searching the secondary market for cd's for sale. Amazon & ebay to name 2. I haven't found any of their music for sale. I did find a site with a download. I don't know about the site or any virus or cookies it might have. That is up to you to see if you think it is safe. the link is archive.org/details/Slainte
thank you.
I am fond of this kind and I found a compilation album where this song had a final with male voices but cnatante was the same.
I'm going crazy to find it!
Thank you and bye
MasterZeusHD
I ran this download through my computer and my virus and malwayre didn't stop it. My virus protection stops most anything, so I'm guessing it's a safe download. Good luck. I think it's been out of issue for so long, it is not being sold online even.
Me gusta más lenta que rapida
The Fighting 69th Song has the same tune.
Which is English.
the flute is beautiful but I'm not down with this slow tune .. I like the fast upbeat version better. ... ditto for I am the Lord of the Dance
