- and no, it's not tacos ;)
Our first fish caught underway! We stop in Newport Beach and then Dana Point before Rediviva's bow points to San Diego. Our last leg in California brings us just miles from the Mexican boarder and we catch our first glimpse of some Mexican islands.
Thanks for watching!
p.s. I try and reply to as many comments as I can but we are still so so busy so please do not take it personally 💕

After watching the build throughout the process, I was lucky enough to catch Rediviva bobbing in the Newport Beach anchorage. She's absolutely gorgeous on video and even better in person! Great job, guys!
Somehow, RUclips unsubscribed me, though. Bad, RUclips. Bad.
Garrett and Ruth,
Absolutely the first fish that I have seen on y'all's channel that didn't end up in a taco.
Thank y'all for sharing.
Cheers!
Blue Skies and Fair Winds.
Faithfully,
James
You grew not only into a sailing channel but also into a cooking channel! Well done!!! And think about keeping a segment like that from time to time.
My favorite episode of the entire series...
Life is a circle. A dream fulfilled in many ways. Fish caught, meal cooked, dinner date. Sea trials, lessons learned, modifications and improvements to follow. Planning for new destinations and adventures.
Ruth and Garet love you and this channel! Fairwinds and following seas.
Did you know that as a spirit animal, the grasshopper is associated with good luck and achieving what you want most? So, when it shows up, he (or she) could be reaffirming to you that you are taking the right steps moving forward. As a big fan, and fellow gaffer, I thought you'd want to know.
I hope you guys grow old together so you can remember all that you had and shared with those who cannot.
San Diego is my home town. Grew up in the hills east of the airport. Spent a lot of misspent youth by bonfires in the fire pits in the bay and the ocean side of Ocean Beach.
Your enthusiasm makes me smile. Great stuff.
Thanks for the holiday. You have when not having a holiday ! Thankyou I feel better now . Greetings from the land down under xx
Born on the Navy Base Port Hueneme, surfed Jedi in Oxnard, never went to Catalina Island while living there, thanks for the memories and places I never went too..
I'm happy to see y'all living your dream,
Note to self - watch this when it's time for me to upgrade sinks! 🙌🙌
Sweet and so exciting. Thanks for sharing. Jim
Another groovy sailing adventure. Love your stuff.
Fish is always better when you don't freeze it. Of course we freeze them when they need to be stored for a long time, but if you're going to consume them anytime soon, they're better if you just refrigerate them and not freeze them.
So sick to see you arrive at my hometown (619). Where I learned to sail when I was 5 in the late 70"s and where I continued to surf till I left for the PNW. I am a Salish Sea Monster now but sure nice to lay eyes so close to Mexico. Congrats and may San Diego welcome you with open arms of hospitality. BTW..hope you are in Mexico by now.
That's what I'd call SAILING!!! Damn Mexico!! WOO HOO!! It's almost tropical MARGARITA time!! Seven years WELL DESERVED!! Sail on! Fair winds and following seas. 💯💯❤️
I've only installed a couple of self-steering windvanes, but I've seen a pic of a couple of old-timers hanging an umbrella under the installation in order to catch anything they might accidentally drop, so that it doesn't go to the bottom of the slip. Seems like an interesting option...
Happy to watch ,thanks for sharing!! Great episode... I was inspired to build a wood fire an roast a 12 lb. Gobbler an bread for dinner . Turned out yummy... Tho I still smell like a camping fire....!! Too tired to shower... Falling into bed after this video!! Excited for the journey! Garrett that lucky cricket picked you an Ruthie to bless for your future sailing life!! Looked like he enjoyed hanging out too! Rite after you caught the fish!! Ruthie an Garrett grateful for your channel an you both... Seriously thank you!! ✌🏼💗😊⛵
You've already run into Emerald Steel, You're getting close to being in Delos' current stomping grounds too, would be awesome be see that happen!
7 years hard labour... quite a sentence to impose on oneself. All that work and all that anticipation and hope and longing. The consequent sense of freedom and release must be intense. I imagine everyday untethered must have a big sense of celebration in it. Well earned and much deserved.
And we get to come too... clever girl. You are both so credible in your frank what is, and your genuine spontanaity. you look and sound unscripted and spontaneous.
Best of all maybe is the thing itself, your vessel, and the HOW of it. What it means to yourselves and your viewers to get the IT of it in how it was made and WHY it was made that way... which you said as a sort of running credo several times throughout the build. A unique, empiricle manifestation of a working man's version of what he believes and how it ought to be made real. AND, One he and his partner can live on and IN.
Before a lot of time passes and it all gets assumed, I think it's worth saying because it's a rare and uncommon thing to witness someones philosophy taking shape live on camera up close and very personal for all to see and enjoy.
Love your shows. You guys rock. What an awesome work ethic for all these years.
Please remember to control the volume in post so we don't have to be a volume jockey 🙂
Rad! Get jigs from fisherman’s landing. Ask them for yellowtail jigs, you will love yellowtail! JRI, Salas are the best.
last leg of the california coast that's pretty dern cool. Pretty soon you'll be in some tropical waters. congrats.
Ruth, I have been watching your channel since you were working on the boat on land. You have come so far. You are an able bodied sailor now, as well as a competent boat builder. I have so enjoyed watching your progress. I am so proud of you. You are easy going and very supportive. If I had a daughter, I would want her to be just like you. You are a total package. Oh, but only to meet you.
Kinda weird dude, there's 2 of them, they both came so far, they both are great boat builders. Kinda creepy.
Garret... boat builder, sailor & sushi chef extraordinaire . Quite the catch you have there Ruth.
I agree, but Ruthie is an equally fine catch...and the reason why I watch every week...for years. And I'm 66. 😃
Yes… Ruthie is such a great combination of beauty, intelligence, talent and skill. Her sweet disposition and inner beauty is like a beautiful wrapping on a priceless gift. Truly a wonderful person and a joy to watch.
cant wait for the tacos lol xx
It's a good omen that the dolphins escorts you wherever you go
Your finest catch will always be Ruth.
MEXICO!!!!!! Ya all are going to make it, that's gotta feel so good after 7 years of building. You two are my hero's, keep up the awesome video's.
6:49 - Now I have seen it all. 🤣
7:41 - Into the pot for fish soup.
One of the advantages of having two masts is that it's easier to get the boat to self-steer downwind.
A vane is always nice. But some boats absolutely must have one to self-steer downwind.
It is interesting to note that at least two Golden Globe racers quit because their vane steering broke down.
Their boats were close to REDAVIVA in proportion and keel type, but had Bermuda mains and were sloop or cutter rigged.
Congrats! On the fish and reaching this farr south!
Great video, loved the food prep!
Garrett the master chef … who knew?! Best couple of dudes afloat … big ups, guys! 🎉❤
And special admiration for Ruthie’s ever-thoughtful, empathetic commentary - capturing every moment and making the ideas breathe. 🎉❤
Well done
РОМАНТИКА!
Y'all just keep getting better and better... in so many ways. Thank you!
Oooooh, I need to get a copy of that book. Thanks for the heads up ✌️
I'm so happy you're including the technical side of sailing! Thank you!
Your new friend did you a great favor - that is a pretty "rare" book (hard to find and expensive when you do!) Put some library wrap on the dust jacket - it looks like a really clean copy! I have a pretty huge marine library and don't own a copy!!!! When you get back to Morro Bay to visit, look us up and well entertain you on our Lyle Hess cutter MINKE - Charlie Nichols....enjoy the ride!
Love the beat music 🎶
Great video. You have enviable, inherent storytelling skills that keep each issue fresh, newsy, charming. And most of all, our spirits are lifted by your success, dedication, and delight in each other and the world.
Ancient mariners like Jason & the Argonauts didn't have any wind vanes; I guess that's why they got lost heading for home
Grasshopper. 😝 Love the video!
Thanks
Glad to see yer 7 years of hard work(the build) is paying off👍 Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
If you are planning to stay in a Marina for sure talk to Joe at Shelter Island Marine, they are the best and allow you to get stuff shipped to the hotel plus give you a towel a day for showers, have an awesome pool and spa, and you get 20% off at the bar and restaurant. I loved it for my stay.
Salt and Tar, Happy Thanksgiving. Do what you do and well follow you. God Bless
sweet job on bonito
Looks awesome
Awesome
as somany "viewers" have already said --- GOOD ON YA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am very proud of Your accomplishments !!!!!!!!!! I truly wish You Guys all da BEST As Garret would say HOLD FAST !!!!!!!!!!
You both have done it. Built your dreams 1 year after another. Now you are on your own schedule. If you haven't thought about this ( day cruises on a real sailboat). You can get 4-6 people 1-2 times a week and charge what you feel is right. There are nobody else who has a boat like you hardly left. I would give $200 for a 8 hour sail on your boat. Even a deal like 2 adults and 2 kids for $300 or something that works for you. Or do a whole week of day sailing in an area then have extra money to move on. I just feel you have a knack for this.
I've got my🤞there is a meet-up along the way in Mexico with Brady and Bule and then Delos.
Back in the water
Rightfully proud of that fillet job!
Thank you for showing the kindness you did to the fish...so many don't and it saddens me x
Love watching, Thank you so much.
I can't believe you ate that bonita. We used to throw them back because they were known to be strong and fishy tasting.
Its nice to see Garrett enjoy doing some cooking in the boat you guys took so long and with so much sweat to complete
I really needed this today guys. Thanks so much. Sail-on!
Lol..next time you're gonna use wooden sticks, try soaking them in water for a bit Before you introduce them to the flame.
This was so much fun. Thanks!
Garrett and Ruthie, I just wanted to say Thank You! I've been watching your adventures from the beginning and yall are an inspiration for the world! Keep up the great work!
Love the boat and love the channel. I am looking forward to your upcoming adventures and I am so happy that you decided to take us all along for the ride. Take care!
My boat was built in Newport Beach, I don't know if it will happen but it would be cool to sail it back there 🏴☠️
I enjoy that fish also. Smoked it is outrageous! Just remove the head, and cut down through the ribs in one side(butterfly). Very low heat with some smoke, salt, and butter. 👍👏👍
So excited to see your seven year build culminating into a life at Sea
That's a grasshopper (also known as a locust, if part of a swarm, or plague) A cricket is a different kind of insect.
Great vid enjoy your time
Congratulations guys
You are an inspiration
Great video
Better and better!! Thank you so much for allowing me (landlubber) to live vicariously through you!!
You both look healthier and happier every time i see you. Must be that salt air and Benito...
Once again, thank you for the well presented, fantastically narrated Vlog. (NZ Fan)
If you get a chance stop by McDini's Baja and have a beer or 3. My old haunt in the late 80's and early 90's and much of my ill spent youth.
Haha right on!
@@SaltandTar 8th street in National City. Used to be filled with US Navy Sailors...
Im so bummed that I had to leave San Diego right before you guys came in. Its been a dream of mine to see you all sail for the past 4 years and I missed it by just a few weeks.
glad you guys are having fun.
You guys seem sooo much more relaxed and at ease than year ago. Smooth sailng !!!!!
Spent most of my life in OC, tons of time in Newport, in the harbor and at the Beach in High School. I truly miss it there but forces beyond my control moved me to Florida after 65 years in SoCal back in 2020. Hopefully I can make it back one day. Thanks for the memories
Next stop Mexico 🇲🇽! You are well on your way to becoming globetrotters! I am sure you'll enjoy Mexico 🇲🇽 with its relaxed lifestyle and I hear the food is fantastic! Congratulations on your first fish. I'm glad it was a bonito and not a mahi mahi because I have heard that mahi mate for life and if that is correct I would hate to break up a happy couple!
Bon voyage!
I have been watching since day 1 and wow, what an amazing journey. It has been a pleasure watching your journey. Congratulations., you did it!
Crazy. OUTSTANDING.
And congrats on the fish. They're be more of that for sure.
May your learning curve be a shallow incline.
Another fine job I really like your channel
Have you considered a "Free Hand" self steering? Mike Anderson builds them and he's pretty close to where you are - may be worth a look while youre waiting on delivery. We have one, but haven't mounted it yet - prev owner bought it and sold the boat before he got it mounted all the way. We'll get that done (on the list) - but it is a pretty cool way to steer a boat - different than most set ups.
Thank you for that sailing lesson Gerrit! Great info - for someone who did learn sailing A G E S ago and hasn't done a lot of it since. Great one!
the apporach of ruth's monologue after that lesson sums it up greatly! There is on the one hand physics to understand - and on the other hand simply age ... eons old experience to absorb.
For me this is one more aspect that I didn't think you'd bring that keeps me watching after you left the building phase!!!!!
Great tutorial on self steering with sails. My only experience is with Marconi rigs, and the gaff main must act as a massive wind vane as the bulk of sail area is at the leech and high.
Thank you so much for this. So beautiful :)
SOO SOO Cool for you two! Thanks for sharing some with us. Steve rhome tx.
You guys are going to get me through the winter! Haha
Really like what you guys are doing....it's very inspiring! As an old carpenter I would love to build a sailboat. You two have done a great job. Your tenacity, skills and mutual support have made your dream come true.
Do take a look at John Fleming's Hebridean servo pendulum vane. He is in Inverness Scotland. His inexpensive kit uses wood and stainless but it has now been to Oz and around Iceland etc. It has a special geometry allowing a truly horizontal pivot (giving more steering correction power in all conditions). He has sent a number to the US.
Also I remember how much detailed woodwork it took to build the galley and seats and table and so on
Yours is such a beautiful, beautiful boat.
Nice bit of knowledge on that sail loading
Beautiful sailboat from a distance👍
We caught a lot of Bonita as a kid , Dad taught us that if you're eating Bonita make sure to cut out the red vein along the backbone . We also smoked Bonita & Barracuda both very good smoked . Happy Thanksgiving are you still in San Diego .
Your content and video editing, converting footage into an excellent user experience. Turn south for the Pacific, knowing the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas is waiting for you.
Major respect and love to you both
