KEEMO KIMO

- The melody of this comic tune comes from an early 18th century fife-and-drum tune often referred to as "Frog In the Well." By the mid-19th century, it had acquired a set of popular nonsense lyrics of a distinctly Southern flavor. Like many contemporary so-called 'plantation songs,' "Keemo Kimo" has the lyrical construction of a 'cadence-counting' piece, ideal for accompanying labor common to the plantation - or on the march. An individual would sing out the verse and the marching column or company would sing back the refrain en masse. Such songs, when sung on the march, often helped to keep morale high and make the 'work' (and miles) pass more pleasantly.

19th century lyricists coming up with absolute nonsense were geniuses in their own right.
It's 23pm o'clock. I'm going to bed with your music in my heart.
Thank you so much.

Greatest Civil War Band EVER!
It's 5 AM, and I'm listening to this. And I love.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
I AM FROM BRAZIL 🇧🇷
Tragic that you had to remove the first stanza
Hahaha, a tragedy indeed. All that's missing is Lovecraft's cat and some lesser-thans to make up the trifecta.

Joe if you read this I saw your interview on emerging civil war just recently and it was nice to hear about the band after so long. I have very fond memories of you all in Gettysburg. My father used to portray General Pickett and I remember you two having a few beers at O'Rourke's in maybe '06 or '07. I cant remember exactly. He passed away in 2016 but the bands music and my times in Gettysburg I will cherish forever. Thank you all
Yes ! I remember your dad, and I remember meeting him at O'Rouke's. Not so clear about the year, but I bet you're in the ballpark. I'm sorry to hear he's passed. If I recall correctly, he was having health issues back when I met with him. We corresponded more than a few times on Facebook and email. I liked him. May he rest in peace.
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Very fond memories for sure. And like you said the music is timeless. I'm glad our paths crossed that's for sure. He had a heart attack so at least not a slow decline, so I'm at least grateful for that. I'm glad to see you're still beating the drum and I always look forward to your uploads. Keep on truckin and many blessings to you and the family!
Always a great day when 2nd South Carolina String Band uploads. This was great in 2 ways, not only musically but also a peak into our own history. You can really see the technological advancements we've seen in 20 years. Thanks for your work at preserving our heritage!
Just realized this song is really similar to Old 1812, I had wondered if anyone had ever put lyrics to it, I never imagined nonsensical lyrics like these however.
I love this band so much been listening to it for a while now

To be fair, this song is silly *on purpose*
You guys make the best Music
This is great stuff, really puts a spring in your step!
Uma canção que produzia tanto efeito no moral dos Confederados levando os a se engajar na Campanha
Muito bom 😢
Would love to see you guys live!
We love your history and cultural insights to these historical songs. It’s not just a song, it’s history. The past may not be now, but it was. And people lived it. The highs and lows of war were real just as my day is to me today. You bring those times to life, if but just in these songs sung by many in the past. Long live the Bonnie Blue!
To sing along with you guys is a must !
Makes my heart burn with patriotic rage.
KERSHAWS BRIGADE !!!
Wonderful!
Is this from the Lightning in a Bottle recording? If you have video of it it would be great if we could see the entire concert, if possible.
Very good!
Wonderful! 🇮🇹♥️🇺🇸
it's 2:14 in the morning.
reminding me of chubby parkers version of froggy went a courting
I can easily see that this was just meant to boost morale, it is funny though!
I think this song was sung by the mule-mounted mail carrier in the Movie Sergeant York.
👏👏👏👏
Have you guys ever recorded Little Brown Jug written by Eastburn in 1869?
Looks ;like you got a whole orchestra so God less ALL Yall!
Keemo kimo chemo kighmo.
Keemo therapy
Sounds a lot like Australian Bush music.
All English language folk music comes from the same place originally
I would expect some similarities
I can't access your official website anymore, why? Is it closed?
Folk sounds the same in all accents
Hi.
Ur profile pic is bad
Amazing song! the tune is so catchy. I do not like the racist lyrics at the beginning of your other versions of this song, but a great melody anyways!
Where can I find that? I searched the channel and it didn't pop up.
You’re a yankee wimp then. In South Carolina the Dar-keys really do go “keemo kimo”
Is this a racist song?
Sorry the other two versions on your channel have quite a bit more racist lyrics. Since it's a historical song.
You have to remember that at that point in history, it wasn't racist. That was just everyday life
@@Kingofovertimea Uh doesn't make it any less racist.
@Alexandre L yes by today's standards like I said it was written when it was an acceptable part of society
@@Kingofovertimea See the thing is its never acceptable. I don't care about todays standards in fact I consider myself a white nationalist. I still think its racist.
