Old Rosin the Beau

- First published in Philadelphia in 1838, “Old Rosin the Beau” likely comes to us from the British Isles. The words and melody are ‘traditional’, meaning there is no known lyricist or composer on record. For the longest time, we naturally thought the title referred to the “bow” that is “rosined” to make it grab the strings of the violin. As it turns out, a version that circulated prior to 1838, actually was titled, “Old Rosin the Bow,” and the lyrics speak of a well-traveled and popular fiddler, now grown old and reflecting upon his approaching death.
However, the 1838 version, arranged and published by one J.C. Beckell, is the more familiar and often raucous drinking song. Because of its catchy melody and swinging waltz-time rhythm, the tune has been borrowed for many other uses: several 19th century political campaigns, among them notably Abraham Lincoln (“Lincoln and Liberty”); various folk songs (e.g., “Denver”, by the 1963 New Christy Minstrels; and more recently by our friend, David Kincaid, who applied it to a rebel treatment of “Kelly’s Irish Brigade”, on his “The Irish-American’s Song” album.
Not surprisingly, we learned the raucous drinking version and that’s the one presented here. Sing along if you like ! Видеоклипы
The 2nd south Carolina String band is my favorite civil war band and this song is really good I love this type of music and I love your version of my old Kentucky home but I know you all sing a lot of Stephen voster songs I thank if stephen voster was still alive he would be proud to see a decated band play his great songs rip Stephen voster and a rebel yell for the 2nd south Carolina String band

Excellent 👍 greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
Love it ...my favorite band ever ...and I’m from London England 👌
Thanks, Chris ! Rule Britannia !!!
God Save Southern culture - another compliment from your English admirer.
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star! Hurrah for the 2nd South Carolina String Band! This music is 1,861 times better then modern music and you guys play it exceptionally well!
Modern music could hardly even be called music 🙄
@@AwRighttttt You said it
Greatings from Poland! God bless you and all the south!
Am Polish too cousin, please do not bless the south. The average confederate fought to preserve the institution of slavery, with Alexander Stephens (Vice President of the confederacy) stating the reason for the confederacy was to create a government that ‘accepted’ the natural inferiority of Africans to white Americans, and that slavery would act as a teaching mechanism. Fuck the south.

I didn’t know you were born in 1838
Same!!!
Those Mississippians, Alabamians, and Floridians spent that first year of the war training, seemingly nonstop, under Braxton Bragg and were some of the fiercest fighters at Shiloh a year later.
Amazing performance! 2nd South Carolina String Band is my favourite band.
THE OLD SONGS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL.

These guys are the best at what they do...authentic victorian string band music. Proud to have been asked to document this weekend of shows for them. This is as close to musical time travel as you'll get.
Gee, thanks MIke ! Check's in the mail... 😃
Honestly this music has been getting me through this pandemic up north.
Glad to hear it !
I admire your authentic musical persona.
Man, I'm glad I stumbled upon this. This is great.
Love this one. I play this at reenactments, etc., and our KCW Round Table Lincoln guy always asks for it. :D But the drinking version is fun. Very Irish. lol
We loved that one too !
I really love the United States and especially the spirit of the South !
Salutations depuis la France :)
MercI vous! Avez vous un translation de le chante "Old Rosin' Le Beau", Si Vous Plait?
Glad to see you folks are still active.
Don't stop! Hope you seek out and train new musicians!
Once upon a time there was a superb band of music...
Thanks again, David. (Check's in the mail...)
I love the music no matter who makes it no matter who they are no matter their past no matter who they support music is music
Reminds me of the tune of Kelly’s Irish Brigade and Lincoln and Liberty
Same tune. Although I don't think Kelly’s Irish Brigade is a period song, couldn't find anything about it being such. The melody is also used for When Sherman Marched Down to the Sea.
A beautiful song. The real People's music. Greethings from Ukraine.
One of my favorite songs to play on the violin, maybe because it’s about a fiddler! I can’t help but smile when I hear the song.
Fantastic playing. The music sounds so much better when it's being played live
You should hear it with headsets on...
I hope I get to see you guys live some day. The music is sensational and I can imagine the crowd is as well.
Long live the south. Greetings from spain.
Somehow it feels like I was back to my hometown. What a wonderful band!!!!
That was a really nice thing to say ! Thanks so much for your kind comment !

Gave up what drinking I was doing which wasn't much in 71 and was coerced into that one and my 3 score and 10 ran out a bit ago. The old codger is a lot closer than he was but he'll not get me till it's my time. My Lord will see to that. So rosin your own beau if'n you can stand it. Love american civil war music, and you guys are probably the best playing them. A Fan from Colombia!
What a fantastic video! I love the many versions of this song, with the tune also being used in “Lincoln and Liberty too,” and “Kelly’s Missouri Irish Brigade!” Incredible to see a few different camera angles in this one (just a side note.) I must say, your voice work sounds absolutely phenomenal in this installment. These are some of the best vocals that I have heard from the band! Thanks so much for posting, very happy to see you releasing more content!
There are many more civil war songs that use the tune as well
How wish I to find such an evening there...but America, its South is huge, especially for a foreigner like me. You're the lucky ones who witnessed that by own ears and eyes:)
Great perfoming, precise entourage and spirit!

I learned to play violin at age 8, so "rosin" and "bow" evoke ancient memories! Rosining produces a lot of dust. (I had actually wanted to learn the clarinet.) Although, unlike you, i was not very ambitious or proficient on the violin, i kept playing in school and then college orchestras, mainly because i loved music and was content to be a part of it. I also learned piano and guitar too but alas, never got highly proficient with them either! I'm far better at graphic arts without even trying. So now i don't play, i just listen to high quality music and am quite content!
It doesn't get better.
Lord bless you all, and lord bless the U S of A! Love yall!
well done even better than clancy bros
STOP it !!! You're making me blush ! You're TOO kind !

the welsh claimed it was a scottish song- was played by my great great grandfather (a fiddler) in Wales- prior to 1884
How cool is that !? Sometimes it seems like all the good tunes are Scots/Irish... Thanks for the comment.
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand just re read the article and it says that a blind man learned the tune on a fife 50 years prior to 1886!

@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Nice! Keep it up!
Hey 2nd South, what did the skit with da lady and da frog mean, of course, referring to lightning in a jar, what was the back story if there is one. I may have missed it
During the 'arc' of our reenacting/performing years, we were fortunate to meet many wonderful, and colorful folks. One of the most wonderful such persons was Chip Breeze, once a very imposing Richmond, VA, detective and larger-than-life personality. He had long collected and studied 19th century 'stump speeches' (many of them comedic minstrel versions), and created a period character, Dr. Hezikiah T. Witherspoon, who would reenact these hilarious speeches at events where we and a few other bands similar to ours would appear. "The Lady and De Frog" is one of them. A “Stump Speech” traditionally followed the first act of a minstrel show.
