Edit: Hell, thinking about it more and how many skeletons there are, there could probably be another 6 part series just on the NDA's Vince has likely made people signed over the years alone. It could literally be a whole spin-off podcast on just this one monster.
Whether it was drugs or not, Fritz Von Erich caused David's death. David was feeling unwell before he ever flied to Japan, and Fritz told him "you never cancel a booking" and made him fly overseas anyway. Dark Side of the Ring did a pretty detailed account of the whole thing.
This. Didn't help that Fritz himself was deteriorating.

True. I watched the Dark Side of the Ring episode, and boy, that whole saga was sad to the end, though the end with the surviving brother carrying on and rebuilding his life was heartwarming.

I used to live in Waterloo, Iowa...there is a wrestling hall of fame there, but until today I never knew why. In fairness "Ed" from Detroit was the son of Lebanese immigrants and at least had legitimate middle eastern ethnic heritage.

Points about Roddy Piper from back in the day... He was never the world champion in any promotion back then because of his volatile personality. McMahon and other promoters wouldn't give him the belt because they were never quite sure he'd go along with a storyline or match outcome where he loses it if he was mad, or drunk , or didn't like the guy he was supposed to lose it to, etc. You can even see this in his history--like, for a really long time he never once lost any title cleanly. He'd always lose it as a stipulation in a special rules match, or be stripped of it for not defending it in 30 days, or whatever. He finally did clean jobs near the end of his career to guys like Bret Hart, Ric Flair, and Randy Savage because he trusted and respected them as professionals in the business. He was famous for refusing to job for Hulk Hogan because he said all the heels that lose to him end up as mid-carders at best.
Cocaine is a helluva drug . The damage he did to his career is nothing in comparison to what coke did to his heart . Piper knew he was not gonna live long enough to claim his retirement
This podcast has a unique ability to take the most horrific events imaginable and somehow still play them for laughs in a genuine way

When I was an exchange student in the states in the mid 80s I had arguments with adults who believed that all the WWF fights were completely on the level. It was weird.

Hackenschmidt may or may not have invented the bench press, but he's the guy that popularized it. He's also the guy that popularized the barbell hack squat, but I don't think "invent" is the right word for that. Barbells already existed, and the barbell hack squat is just a movement pattern.

As a lifter barbend is a pretty decent source. Idk about the bench press business and whether or not there was a similar loft at the time. But even if there was it is very possible that he invented the modern bench form (back arch, slight angle bar path, etc) which might differentiate it from previous similar lifts
apparently, and according to wikipedia, he actually dies at 89 though, so regardless of whether george hackensmidt invented the bench press, he was actually fairly long lived.
This is really entertaining and I look forward to the whole thing, having been a big wrestling fan in a time not too long before Roberts. I think he might be underselling his interest in the topic at the start though. Like a kid with new bmx bike, no helmet and a ramp at the the end of a cul-de-sac, I bet he couldnt wait to take the plunge (6 episodes lol)

The whole wrestling world is full of bastards. It was pretty much the norm until very very recently.. How they escaped the "me too" stuff is beyond me. There is a clip here on RUclips about how Steiner forced a rat to sleep with his "best friend", and the guy who tells the story laughs while telling it, like it was just a fun night..

The story I'd always heard on David von Erich was that he had intestinal problems. He was puking like crazy before flying to Japan, and with the flight and whatnot, that is what did him in. Could just be a cover up, but if it is, the story is consistent with a lot of folks. I'd never heard Bruiser's story before.
The thing is, it doesn't matter - he shouldn't have gone in the first place, and it probably wasn't his choice to begin with. If a boss knows their employee is really ill, if they force the employee to go somewhere they will be hurt further it's the _boss's_ responsibility, not the employee's.

The “gotcha” is a false head you wear while you duck your head like a turtle in between your massive shoulders. You coax your opponent into giving you a headlock only to pop off the fake head and reverse the lock. Gotcha!
yeah my wrestling exposure as an 80s-90s kid was playing Doink the Clown on SNES and constantly slapping people with his bucket. Such tragedies had to occur for me to have a little harmless fun in that game.

I introduced this film to my group of dorm buddies in our freshmen year of college in 1999 and it swept our school's campus like wild fire. You'd go to parties, and all night long, people who'd never even seen an episode of KITH would be celebrating keg stands with cheers of "Gleemonex for Pets!" or "Fuck Happy!" This movie only failed due to studio mismanagement.

Speaking of monsters, can't get behind your choice of guest "Seanbaby," given he ran a "Fat Chicks in Party Hats" website for years which was entirely devoted to taking personal photos from fat women's websites and writing disgusting things about their appearance. If they asked him to take the photos down, he would make more pages mocking them for trying to escape his targeted abuse. He did so under a fake name, but it was attached to his own website, he wrote articles hyping the site, and there are articles on his own website which are the same thing written in the same style minus the fake Mexican accent. The guy is a bully. I guess he's fun to hang out with if he's not targeting you, personally.
