@@whattheflyingfuck... they were crazy, but bluntly speaking that did not DESERVE to win.. Not a screaming song in a song contest. High quality, but not winning quality. THis isnt just about the spectacle - though its a big part of it
This is a variation of a folk song and dance, called a vesnianka. These songs and dances were used to awaken spring. In the folk version of the song, Shum has a green fur coat :)))
This song is basically a cover of the old Ukrainian folk song that is around 1000 years old. As others have already explained, the song is a ritual. They're inviting spring to come. Also, the instrument is not a flute, it's a Ukrainian folk musical instrument called Sopilka. Great reaction ❤
Yeah, she had a tumor in her lung so they had to remove it, so she only has one working lung. It's impossible for her to sing in a more "regular" way, which is one of the reasons why she got into this type of singing instead.
"Out of America experience" 🤣 I feel this is a spring ritual, where she is spring personified - a goddess. They can't see her, but they can feel her, and through that connection she has them under her command, and they're giving into it.
Fun fact: The guy with the Ukrainian flute participated again the following year - this time as part of the Ukranian Kalush orchestra, which won the contest. 🙂
Kateryna is a QUEEN. Saw them in concert at the end of October and it was magical and spiritual. Honestly incredible and powerful. If you get a chance, watch their set at the Pinkpop Festival 2023 for a taste of their magnificence!
This song is a call to spring. That's why the trees are winter without leaves, and Kateryna is in a green fur coat. The song was very relevant after the covid pandemic.
OK, so the flute is actually a sopilka - traditional Ukrainian instrument (Ihor plays a lot of different kinds of them). The song is about the awakening of the nature at the beginning of spring so the trees are the winter ones while the singer represents the deity of spring and forest - Shum (hence the green fur coat). The original song of which this is the version or remake - goes back thousands years - that's probably why you feel you've been transported to some ancient place))) Greetings from Ukraine!
I'm still obsessed with this song! I discovered them the year before with their 2020 entry and have loved Go_A since. Kateryna is such a Queen! Their mix between Ukrainian folklore and techno is so brilliant ❤👍
“Shum” honours a “vesnyanka”, a traditional Ukrainian type of song attached to the spring ritual. This season is the protagonist of the song: “Oh vesnyanka, vesnyanka, where have you spent your winter?”. Nature is another theme: “Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants, Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones”. Yes, that’s what the catchy “Siyu, siyu, siyu” means.
they were my absolute favorite that year their concept and music is so refreshing and cool and even though they ended at 5th place they are now official Eurovision legends
The flute is a Ukrainian instrument, called Supilka (edit: Sopilka, sorry)! Fun fact: the musician playing it, is also playing bass a year later in ESC, with Kalush Orchestra (Ihor Didenchuk).
no beards and no ale)). Ancient Ukrainians drank honey and its derivatives (medovukha). then beer, wine, horilka and fruit liqueurs (nalyvkas). the beards were shaved. wore a “potty” or “oseledets” hairstyle. only very old men or priests or a Jew (the owner of a tavern) wore beards. the taverns were called "korchma" or "shinok"
That song remains one of my favorite Eurovision entries ever. From folk to EDM, with a specific Ukrainian flavor and a slice of cheese. Great stage presence, arrangement, and choreography. Also, their "unplugged" performance while cooking is awesome too. The lead singer can really sing!
The singer Katheryna had half of one of her lungs removed as she had cancer as a kid - she's an absolute legend. It was a honour that us in the UK had our first 12 points from the Ukrainian jury announced by her. Go_A are from Chernobyl.
It’s a Ukrainian song in a techno-folk genre. This song type/tradition is almost a millennium old, it's a ritualistic song about an ancient pagan forest deity called Shum. The song is meant to call Shum to bring Spring faster and say goodbye to Winter. And the instrument you hear is of a flute family but actually a traditional Ukrainian (or rather old-Slavic) wind instrument - "sopilka". This is one of the most used instruments in Ukrainian traditional songs. She is singing in a traditional throat singing style, also called “white voice”. It's a beautiful combination of Ukrainian traditions and modern sound :) P.S.: the meaning of the song is also about season changing. In this context, the ending of the pandemic (the Winter) and the beginning of a new era aka new Spring.
In 2021 after the pandemic, all contestants had to record their performance in their own broadcaster, what they called "live on tape" just in case they could not be in Rotterdam to perform. After the contest, the Eurovision RUclips channel uploaded the live on tape versions and Go_A was fantastic, I would say it was better than the final performance. The part of the runners looked incredibly real, like if the White triangled-shaped stand was floating in the space while giant runners came from the back and filled the whole space. Magnificent moment.
Well, you’re right about the wooden staff😂😂 We drink horilka(the Ukrainian name for vodka) and a lot of people like beer so you’re not that far away.😂😂The snacks are usually some meat(you can google also what salo is) also can be baked potatoes etc. And the song really has these traditional ukrainian vibes and lyrics. Thank you for listening to our music❤️ Hello from Ukraine! 🇺🇦
aaahahah im from Ukraine, and we definitely don't have that in our bars🤣🤣🤣 I'll explain a bit about the song: it sings about spring, that's why the trees are white, they symbolize winter
So... just to answer some of your questions: 1. Our bars look exactly like any average bar (unfortunately😂). Though we have some that look like old taverns but they're mostly for tourists. 2. And no, we don't live in cabins. More like plain boring 5/9/16 story buildings. 3. No, we don't have white plastic leaveless trees here 😂 I really loved your video and your reaction. I get such a positive vibe from both of you. I'll be waiting for your next video!
Go_A is just something else :D the guy with the flute, Ihor Didenchuk, also contributed to "Stefania" and I love him. Kate Pavlenko is the singer, she does this thing called "White Voice" which is a folk music technique and she is georgeous. On their YT channel they have a cover of "Lasha Tumbai" and it is all we need in life :D Most importantly though, help the people of Ukraine! We had a coworker from Ukraine and she'll be moving back tomorrow (to Mariupol) because her aunt is very sick. She was crying when we gave her a farewell gift with local stuff from our town and I hope she will be ok. War is terrible.
Ukrainian traditional tavern was made of wood and it's walls were painted white with lime. The roof was either wooden or made of staw. When you walk inside you are welcomed with a smell of delicious food, candlewax, wood and tabacco. The tavern is crowded and loud. There are overworked villagers celebrating the end of a harvest, students from the big city who returned to their home village on the weekend to drink and maybe start a fight with landowner's sons and even the priest from the local Orthodox church who despite preaching about the devil who lives in that tavern comes here every Sunday after cermon. The mistress welcomes new people, serves drinks and cooks amazing food. You can order beer and snacks to it (smoked spiced meat, salted rye bread crackers, salted pig fat, smoked pig ears or dried fish) or you can have a nice dinner with borchst, perogi, porrige or meat stew with vegetables or sour fermented cabbage. And you can order something stronger to drink with it. Usually it's horilka i.e. vodka, but I would recommend you various nalyvkas (plant extract dissolved in pure alcohol). You can order vyshnivka (cherry nalyvka) which is sweet and gentle and always the crowd pleaser, or spotykach made of various spices and sugar ("spotykatysya" means "to stumble" so don't drink much or you'll not be able to walk), or honey, or black currant (my favourite), or hot pepper, or even horseradish which is very hot and very strong. That's a traditional tavern, "shynok". But I would say that modern Ukrainian pubs are not very different from that.
You HAVE TO check out Netherlands 2022. The singer is S10 and the song is called De Diepte. Also, Slovenia 2023: Joker Out - Carpe Diem. You´d love it.
