As someone from Hong Kong, I have to disagree here. Hong Kong is simply transitioning its role from "China's gateway to the world" to "The world's gateway to China". Let's say a China company wants to attract foreign investment for development, they will prefer to be listed on HK stock exchange rather than on the US stock exchange for obvious reasons. (e.g. Huawei, TikTok) And a lot of foreign investors also favor investing in China via Hong Kong because of Hong Kong's monetary policy which allows money to flow in and out of the system freely. Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to play this role for China, and China is too smart to abandon it. It wasn't about patriotism, it is about what makes economic sense.
As an international citizen, I think we ought to stop ourselves from telling others what to do, especially when we are not in the position to know their current status quo or what's in everyone's mind. Cogito ego sum
