Here's legit advice from someone who was on their college panel for scholarships:
Prioritize scholarships issued from your own college as you only have to compete with classmates and not a whole state, or nation.
Read up on the scholarship itself and what the donors prioritize. Don't go for scholarships that don't match your interests 1 to 1 because chances are there is someone else that's a better match and will be picked over you.
If you're a minority or the government declares your family low income, use that to your advantage. Mention your struggles in your letter and how that affects your studying/life/opportunities and how much better you would be if you had that money.
Fill out your FASFA and any other documents as that sometimes disqualifies you from the scholarship. Good luck.

@@roon66568 General rule of thumb is that public colleges will have less tuition costs and some will offer scholarships packaged into your admission depending on how good your transcript is. As for private colleges, they usually have a web page dedicated to any scholarships they may offer. I'd also look into any state wide financial assistance programs in addition to your FASFA. Illinois has MAP and Pell grants that absolutely helped. Even scholarships that may seem small monetarily like less than a thousand, can add up if you get multiple.

And while I worked hard for my academic scholarship, it’s not what is paying for the majority of my education, the military is. So yes, do what you can to avoid debt, BUT i hate the narrative that if you just work hard for scholarships, you’ll be covered because that is NOT the reality of this situation, nor is it the reality of MOST situations. I will say, it happens (rarely) and that’s great, but I just hate when messages like this get pushed because they aren’t fair to everyone who works hard and doesn’t have a built-in advantage (like military coverage).

Double majored in STEM and my 60K worth of student debt was paid off in two years. Student debt isn’t a problem if you have any sense of plan going into college. It’s people who go “just to go” and get a worthless degree that complain about student debt. Not everyone needs to go to college. Nor should they.

I agree. The issue is that we have too many students going, dropping out, accumulating debt, or otherwise getting worthless degrees. Guaranteed loans are also a massive problem.

    2 things to add here:
    1. Student loans suck, but can be used to your advantage since they act as essentially a free and cheap credit builder since for whatever reason you get bonus credit multipliers for paying back the government
    2. If you really want to avoid loans and endure 4 years of suffering a full time job can pay for in state tuition as long as your college isn’t ultra prestigious
Besides that, I find it laughable to say “get scholarships”, since the people I know who got full rides more often than not lived on the privileged side (see this video) and had time to build up a great resume because they didn’t ya know, have to work in high school so their family could get by.
Don’t feel like using loans is a failure on your part. the system is broken and we’re all trying to work with the hands we’re dealt

It's really simple either you qualify for academic scholarships that make a college degree worth it
You pick a major that has high paying job prospects that can justify the debt think STEM fields we all have Google for average starting salaries for a given major at a given school calculate the debt vs the payoff
Or go to a trade school out of high school it's cheaper and trades are in high demand
Never take out loans for a program that will never give you a return on investment don't do it its a trap

People aren’t used to getting help from their parents and so they project… parents are supposed to put their children in a position to be more successful. Because most people don’t have that privilege, it’s seen as an issue when that’s how it’s supposed to be in the first place.

Well, she had the advantage of the military connection and scholarships are not always an option or available for everyone, plus her degree doesn't sound all that useful, but she clearly had some ideas how to navigate the system, the importance of speed and not wasting time, and clear awareness that loans are ultimately bad. Even if you must take out student loans, having an attitude like hers won't hurt you. Way too many people enter college with too little focus, drag it out too long, stack up more loans than absolutely required, and don't early appreciate that those loans are a problem.

“Try to not”. Why didn’t I think of that? No wonder she’s graduating early.

She could just say "my dad is military" and that's it. None other factor played bigger role for her to avoid student loans.
