It's good but i'm not blown away by it. It really makes me think, in a good way, that owning all that Elektron gear isn't a magic bullet to make anything worth listening to. Thanks

jesus christ Jay, just listened to this track and honestly it's so awe inspiring. The work you did with the A4 and Mono sounds freaking amazing. Been listening to this all day and probably for the next few days. Really awesome work you got here man!
Once again you’re single-handedly tilting the scales for me to get more Elektron gear :) got RYTM and after watching this I’m now very sure about digitone…now if AnalogFour could make the cut that would be something. Thanks for the endless inspiration, Jay!

Wow Most Hardware only synth jams are kinda eh But this is so compositionally, and musically incredible. On top of having incredible sound design Props to you for bring the music back into hardware
Was seriously about to ask you, on another of your videos, if u had ever used the Zoia.... and then this track jumps n my feed. Amazing work by the way. As a drummer, I really dig the polyrythims u end up with. Again, great track, great work
I had 2 different monomachine, something was wrong with both of them, but will never get rid of octatrack, and going to upgrade a4 for sure, that bass is deep!
Synth wise do the earlier/newer Elektron gear have any differences tone wise? I’m looking into the Analog Keys, Digitone, and Mono specifically. I’m new to music producing and I’m interested in Elektron gear. Especially the FM synthesis. There’s really not that many comparisons between the models and would like to get some opinions around. Thanks
Very different sounds. The Analog Keys has a very warm analogue sound. The Digitone is quite crystalline and has an enormous amount of sound-shaping ability. The Monomachine is gritty and squidgy and (in my opinion) an extremely pleasing digital-but-not-too-harsh sound. The only drawback to the Monomachine is that it doesn't have some of the perks of the newer devices (e.g. setting "scale", or step resolution). Hope that's useful.
Sounds excellent Jay 1000%. Question: I assume the tempo is set the same on all the machines, using midi sync between them, but how did you program the sequence trigs on the A4 to move slower (1/4th) of the MNM and Rytm trigs? did you do it by setting the steps on all the machines to different values by Page setup? I am just starting to use multiple machines at once. Do you still have, and like Rytm mk2 ?
The entire current Elektron line-up allows you to set "scale" (i.e. step resolution) for each track, so I set the A4's step resolution to be less than what it is by default. And no need to set each unit's tempo; the master will send the correct tempo to all, so you just need to set each to receive start commands and clock. And yes, still have the Rytm Mk2, and like it a lot, although it takes more setup to make it "performable" as compared to the DrumBrute Impact or OP-Z or something. It's worth the extra work since it sounds so great. Best of luck with the multiple-machine setup!
@@JayHosking Thanks for the reply. Yes, 'Scale' is what I meant (OS 1.40 update on A4 mk2), allows to set individual scale (speed of track playback set in multiples of the current tempo) per track; and of course MIDI send/receive settings of each machine. Thanks.
@@weepwow Bought a new OP-1 and the thing broke within three weeks (screen flickers white). The only repair person in Canada is not an essential service, and thus not available to repair. Frustrating, because both of TE's flagship devices have been of poor quality when I bought them (my OP-Z battery has never worked properly). Doubly frustrating because they are great units in terms of creativity. Just wish they weren't so shoddily built.
@@JayHosking haha, my first OP-1 I bought a year ago was brand new, sealed and when I opened it, and tried to charge it up, it never held the charge...I did everything as suggested to boot from Factory etc., so assumed it was defective, and returned it. Now, a year later, I bought this used OP-1 and hopefully this one works as it should, so far so good, just learning it. I think buying a used OP-1 is actually better, any problems would have been addressed already...maybe.. I hear lots of issues about OP-Z, so gonna stay away from that. Plastic candy bar...
In a DT/DN combo, would it be possible to apply an amp envelope to DN's master similar to what you did with the mono? Or from one device's midi track to the other device in some capacity? Thanks for the great content!
I don't think so, no. The only modern Elektron that can apply envelopes to the sound is the Octatrack, which is why I first picked it up (though it turned out there are a ton of great reasons to use it).
Whether you think, you are, or ain't, an ELEKTRON guy, I'm here to tell you, you so deff. Are, and an Octatrack will probably be the perfect Swiss army knife, should you take the plunge, - 👑
I'm wondering now if i should have got a zoia with the 1/4" inputs/outputs instead of my euroburo for connectivity reasons. I wanted to get a digitakt to pair with it or use my 101. did not think that through lol
Can anyone tell me how the monomachine compares in the bass realm with the A4? The A4 really just sounds so breath taking to me, and I want to know how capable the MnM is outside the realm of the outlandish sounds.
There is no comparison. The A4 is almost singular in its bass (beaten only by the Moog Minitaur, in my opinion). The Monomachine is capable of adding many great things to a track, especially in its audio-processing capabilities, but it can't compete with the huge bass of the A4.
thank you very much, looks like the A4 will remain on my wishlist. I asked because I recently got a monomachine secondhand and was wondering if I made a choice I would regret.
Zoia is adding “glaze” (perfect choice of words from you!) to the Digitone arpeggio only. A lot of the other texture is coming from the Monomachine. And thanks!
