    Love your video. Just a side note, because we work the overnight shift with ends at 7:30AM, I’ve managed to land 6 or 7 creek chub on the fly rod between 8-9AM in a local creek on the drive home from work. 😇

      Yeah, I mean, it's not a literal rule. But the bite between 1pm and 7pm is significantly higher than the morning bite.

    we used to dig the bank along them creeks for those jumbo big leeches with a yellow stripe down the middle , they`d be about 11" long on the average good for catfishing.

      @@daveallover Lots of guys used to dig them up here in Ohio when I was younger. I never did research them but we always got them when the creek beds were littered with the smaller baby black leaches at that time of year. Never did figure what the heck something that big would feed on or how being I always dug for them. There wern`t any cattle for a half mile but plenty of wildlife. Now I`m curious and going to have to research it.

    Come on Dave, lol! I would have put a whole worm on my hook for that big one man, he would have come back, I hook a whole worm like 5 to 6 times throughout its body to cover the whole hook so the dinks won't rip it off that fast which causes commotion and sound to entice the big one, I don't care if I used the whole container of worms! I would have been pissed the whole day for that big one. 🤣 You gotta go back man, to see what that was, I wanna know, imma say a bass or cat, I don't see it being anything else. Sweet video, I love creeks and rivers man!!!!

      I'm a cheap ass dude! Lol. I was thinking either freak show chub or a maybe a bullhead. Possibly.... a 2lb sucker. But who knows. I have a more recent video of that creek with some giant chubs in it. P.s. my editing skills are way better now lol. You'll enjoy it!

  • @m.h.english4773

    I find that absolutely fascinating because they always rise to the surface to take my flies. One fly fisherman even commented that when using a nymph for his dropper, they would almost always rise to take his foam black beatle popper instead of his sinking nymph. I guess I never picked them as a, “bottom feeder” based upon my own experiences. 😇

    • @daveallover
      @daveallover  6 месяцев назад

      Well they're not JUST a bottom feeder. They're anything but JUST a bottom feeder.

  • @williambowles3007

    Are they easy to keep alive? what type of bait bucket and aeration is needed for them?

    • @daveallover
      @daveallover  2 года назад +1

      I find them extremely hardy provided you have met several parameters. Cool water, and aeration are your main concerns. I've kept them alive in buckets for 24 hours before. Not ideal however. Use ice cubes, and cooler with aerator, but if the ice cubes are tap water you'll need a third ingredient. It's called "bait saver" order on Amazon. It will improve your baits dramatically and extend their life time.

    Yeah, definitely one of the most underrated fish to land on a fly rod. With the nearest trout streams to fish between 30-60 minutes away by car, catching creek chub on a fly rod has proven to be almost equally as much fun. And the creek that I catch them in back in 1974 when President Nixon signed the Clean Water Act was SO POLLUTED, it’s was consistently thicker than a chocolate malt. Now it’s so clear, you can see clear to the bottom of the creek. But they don’t seem to be picky because they just sit there feeding off the foam line. I’m more than a bit surprised more fisherman don’t target them. 😇

    • @daveallover
      @daveallover  6 месяцев назад

      I've targeted most fish in NA. They are probably top 5 most underrated fish for sport. True generalists as well. They'll eat anything from bugs to cutbait to swim baits. Science has them listed as benthic feeders however they are anything but JUST a benthic feeding fish.

    Chubs like to hang under rocks and skinny ledges of rock , used to slay them when we were kids some times 10" long

      @@jschro446 np. There is one method. Look at the river you fish. Find feeder creeks coming off of it. Follow them on a map several miles until they cross a road and fish there.

    When you say, “benthic feeding”, do you mean to say, “below the surface”? Sorry to let my ignorance show, but having always used a popper/dropper combo, they’ve always risen to the surface to take my flies. 🙂

    • @daveallover
      @daveallover  6 месяцев назад

      Benthic zone is the very bottom of the water. A "bottom feeder" so to speak.
