I am very impressed by you and your lessons. You know how to get right to the point and when I watch you you look very professional as a player and teacher. You know what you're talking about, I love your lesson so far man. I think they're really on the mark. These are some of the best lessons on RUclips. Don't get me wrong, certainly there are a lot of great teachers out there on RUclips but a lot of them, even the good ones don't get right to the heart of the lesson, they can give fluff. You're really good at getting to the good stuff! Please keep these coming, and thank you Rusty!
Hi Rusty, I don’t know if you read these comments but I want to tell you how helpful you have been to my progress on guitar. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. 🎸
Mr Rusty im 56 been playing most my life and have waisted alot of time with not learning correctly, but your style of teaching has been a gamechanger for me , i love knowing which chords im playing down the neck like your teaching here opens so many doors on other positions also , you have a great gift , thank you , a new follower
That’s right buddy! The more confident you have the more fun, you will have is my saying! Glad you found the channel Arty! Thank you and have a great week👍
Hi Rusty I've been playing for many years but your videos are brilliant. They certainly shine lots of light bulbs. You have a brilliant way of getting these techniques across
Great tips Rusty. Learning the triads and notes all over the fretboard, plus the chord tone/scale relationship and playing the same licks in various places helped me the most. Have a great weekend.
Well, said Ray! If we don’t have confidence the notes that we are playing, we will not move forward in our journey. Thanks for leaving a comment buddy. You have a great weekend also.👍
Hi Rusty, Not sure If I commented yet. However. This IS Tony The 🐅 Tiger! GREAT ! I watched earlier. Just Now Getting it. For Me. It's takes Me a Lot of Repition. Which I know is Essential. I Love this lesson!!! It IS Teaching me the Notes. Thank You Rusty - Keep Rocking it ! 🎶🎶🎶 🇺🇸🎉🙏.
I need to watch and listen to things many times myself. Glad you are getting something from the lesson. Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos. Talk to you soon buddy.👍
❤ This is a powerful lesson. THIS is what I'm going to study today after work.. that penitonic scale at the top of the neck with open strings Golden to learn and able to move around the fretboard
Yeah, I'm at the intermediate wall right now. I feel like I play the same ole' scales and progressions that I have always played. Even my wife has told me she's tired of hearing the same stuff all the time. ;) I watch some RUclips videos and I have learned a few songs here and there, but I like to solo and improvise. This channel has helped me break through some of that barrier, and this video hits even closer. Heck I just watched a short where you showed how to use the Am pentatonic for creating new phrases. After watching that video I was creating new phrases!
Well done Rusty as always. Every lesson has been a great influence with ease of learning. If only Australia wasn't so far away. Warmest regards, Colin (Australia)
RUSTY, I STARTED PLAYING GUITAR AT 14 yrs Old and Know Chords and Progression But I Never Really Knew How to put Them Together,,,YOU I UNDERSTAND....Thank You.
Nicely put . This is how I do it too . Maybe add that if you want to play a solo for any song just learn that the relative minor pentatonic and the corresponding major scale give you all the notes you need to be a good player and open the fret board all the way . ie just play those two scales as soon as you know what the key is and you'll be able to play along . If you learn more and more cool bends and licks within these scales you'll be a competent player quite soon . ( maybe a few arpeggios as well ) Next thing , is learn at least 30 of the great solos and play them to a backing track ., made a huge difference to me . Never forget actually being able to play Sultans to the end . Wow what a feeling .
We can definitely add a few things to this list to make us better players that’s for sure. Thanks for checking out the video Fritz. Always something more to learn. Thanks bro 😎
You know; it's kind of crazy that you can watch, listen, and practice along with many teachers as an intermediate player and never really grasp the info being decimated and then run across a guy like Rusty that just lays it out in a way where it finally starts clicking... That's you Rusty! Thank you! I can't explain the difference for me, but it's working. Thanks again, Jimmy
Hey Jimmy, when I make a lesson video, I think back to what I wanted to learn early on. I really have fun teaching this stuff. I appreciate your feedback. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Jimmy 😎
thats a thing, climbing up the neck with one riff .. a guitar journey..thats what it is.. keep learning ..thanks for the tips... feel the music..nice hammer ons here , Jimi style..2:49 very nice melodic playing ...3:57 basic knowledge of the fretboard will make life easier also you see the patterns and how everything is correlated.
These are just the simple things that players need to do to start improvising. I was lazy early on, and did not do these things. I always appreciate your feedback, John! Thanks for taking time out to watch the video and have a great rest of your weekend buddy👍
Thanks so much for all these lessons. Your very humble approach to all these tips is so appreciated and makes it feel that much more attainable. Thanks again.
It occurs to me the main trick to not getting stuck is to keep watching Rusty's Guitar channel and practicing methods and techniques he teaches in each video ~ then it's *impossible* to get stuck... Unless you get to where you know everything Rusty knows and can actually play at his level. And let's face it folks, that's never gonna happen for 99.9% of us.
I shamefully never tried to learn the fretboard for a LONG time (yeah, tabs did a huge disservice in my musicianship). I've gotten most of the fretboard memorized and it makes playing more enjoyable. You know where the chord tones are to target and you dont hit the wrong notes that results in cringy melodies. TL;DR: dont me be, learn the fretboard! You're welcome! 🤣 Awesome video as always, Rusty! Thank you and have an awesome weekend!
I agree the tabs are a hindrance in moving forward. Many players rely on them way too much. and you’re right, knowing the fretboard gives us a lot of confidence when playing chords or lead lines. Thanks for the great comment Jason and have an awesome weekend.👍
Fantastic lesson where you encourage us to connect between the pentatonic notes and the chords. Very precious lesson. Thank you very much Rusty. Surely it will keep us busy with good direction for weeks or months. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thanks Rusty! Practice is more fun with good tone and yours is fantastic! Is it through an interface with your computer? Getting much great info from you. Grab your guitar and practice in context and you will get better!
I’m glad you liked the lesson William! I’m using the Revv G 20 amp and driving it with the Revv tilt overdrive pedal. Also some reverb from the Strymon BigSky. The amp goes directly into my interface. Great little studio amp. Talk to you soon buddy.👍
Dang Rusty, this is yet another eye-opening lesson for me! I can't even keep count of how many times you have made a video that cleared up something I'd been working on for a while! It wasn't even the point of this video, but I was able to see how the caged system worked into the chord progression when you moved up to the 7th fret area from the original open chords. It finally clicked in my head! You have been super helpful for my learning so many times! Thank you!
Hey Doug, this comment makes me glad that I am making these lessons! When we start making sense of the fretboard, it’s exciting! I still get excited! When I make these videos, I’m thinking back when I was struggling and what I should have been working on. Thanks so much Doug. Means a lot buddy. Talk to you soon.👍
Your lessons along with the looper pedal have helped me immensely, it is so much easier for me to stay focused and not just wander around the fret board when I have just a simple 2 or 3 chord progression repeating in the background. I do what you suggest and just concentrate on getting to the correct root note with a little 3 or 4 note phrase and it all takes off from there, once I get a groove going the phrases start to get more notes and the licks almost create themselves.
This guy is super great lessons he brings to the table .. I'm a advanced player been playing for years . But this guy has brought my playing and extra step to stardom.. just were you want to be if you want advance in playing a guitar he covers it all . From your scales to your majors and miners. Great guy and teacher .. thanks Rusty. .m
Fantastic lesson, Rusty. I've always been a little confused about what people were doing when they were sliding up the strings like that, but now it makes all kinds of sense. After training with those "boxes" for so long, it's easy to forget the same scales are laid out linearly as well. Them other inmates here at the old folk's home won't know what hit 'em! ;) 🎸🤘
The old folks will be excited! There’s so many little connections like this. Sometimes we need someone to point them out. And it all comes together. Thanks a lot crash.💥 talk to you soon man👍
Thanks for the great tips. It's always helpful to run through your ideas when practicing. I can never get enough fretboard note practicing. I'll be spending some time with your ideas this weekend. As always, many thanks for the work/fun that you put together for us each week. Please keep up the great teaching.
This is just nothing short of Rusty doing what he does best! 👍🏻 fantastic playing my friend, and the way you’re teaching us all is awesome. Thanks buddy, I’ll have a good go with this tomorrow. Have a great weekend mate 👍🏻🏴🎸
Rusty, this is all great stuff. Some review and some new stuff. I'll be putting it all together and practicing this over the weekend. Thanks for all that you do.
Good lesson. Back to basics. Everybody needs to get back to basics once in a while..It's nice that his presentation and tone are nice and clean. These simple concepts will lead to a world a world of musical possibilities. Also see Dave Brewsters lesson on tough love. Without these concepts and habits you probably won't get better. Just sayin Bye for now.
Yes, I love that little amp! I play out with it all the time! They are the stack saddles that came with the guitar. I bought it used. So I’m not sure. But as I look at them, they do not have that chrome color. So you might be right! Thanks for checking out the video and have a awesome Sunday.🙏
This is terrific I am totally going to spend some time with this today. Once again I really appreciate your teaching style you seem to have a real knack for breaking things down in such a way to where it's easy to follow, understand, and then apply so thank you have an awesome weekend sir:)
I’m really happy to read this message! I’m glad you were getting something from the lessons. If you ever have any questions, let me know. Have a great weekend and talk to you soon.👍
Thanks again for this fantastic lesson, Rusty! Just one question… where can I find the backing tracks?? Can’t find the “description” you mentioned… thanks again!
Hey Craig, underneath where the title is click on where it says “more” There it will show the written description. And the backing track link is there. Thanks so much for checking out the video. Let me know how it goes buddy.👍
You're good Rusty but we don't need a metronome. Indeed sometimes you actually want your timing to be a half beat off or whatever. Sometimes you can string a whole run of disparates and it's off time, but it gels. You know what we mean of course.
You are right! Lol! I thought it would make me look younger, but I was very wrong! Thanks for checking out the video buddy. Have a great weekend lmli ✌️
I played so much last week I'm stuck in a rut a little perfect lesson for today, after running around I'll sit down with my guitar, I do need to restring and clean n polish along with a few drops of conditioner on the fretboard, I have a lot of projects I should've taken care awhile ago so better late than never so thanks Rusty have a good day btw I don't know when you did this lesson but it just popped up on YOU TUBE and the timing is perfect 👌
It really sounds like you’re having fun on that guitar Ray! I’m glad the video popped up, and you checked it out! Thank you for all your support! Talk to you soon brother 😎

Never hit the subscribe/bell so fast.
Glad to hear it Michael! Hope you take away some ideas from the lessons! Thanks man👍
nice channel
Thank you 👍
You're good Rusty but we don't need a metronome. Indeed sometimes you actually want your timing to be a half beat off or whatever. Sometimes you can string a whole run of disparates and it's off time, but it gels. You know what we mean of course.
Thanks bro 😎 Enjoy your Sunday 🙏
Go Rusty !
Thanks a lot 👍
were do you get the background music at and could you devote alittle time to this subject
There is a link in the written description. Let me know how it goes! Thanks, Mack👍
Man I wish I was rich... Id fly you out to where I am and hire you to teach me everything you know...😅
Well, that’s kind of you to say, Raymond! Let me know some topics that would help you along! Later buddy🤛
Knowledge without application is just a ball of worthless information! 👍🏻
Right on man! Thanks Ray! Catch you later 🤛
Rusty you look older with your shaved moustache 😅
You are right! Lol! I thought it would make me look younger, but I was very wrong! Thanks for checking out the video buddy. Have a great weekend lmli ✌️
