SARB033 & 035 : both discontinued (as is the 'alpinist').... I suspect Seiko 'realized' they were selling their 6R15 movement to cheaply, 'cause now this movement only seems to (re-)appear in Seiko watches twice or three times the price. What do you think?
I have the SARB035 (same watch, cream dial). I bought it 13 months ago. It keeps great time. I wear it with everything. I love it! It's funny, because it's hard to stop looking at it in public. Internet pictures do not do it justice. By the way, well done on the video.
Nice Christmas bonus! The 6R15 movement is definitely worth going crazy over. The SARG line has it, too. If you don't want to wear it one day, just whip-up the crown for a few seconds and it's charged (it hand-winds). And the case-work is beautiful. It's a baby Grand Seiko! Congrats!
Thanks for taking time to post this review! I've owned a sarb035 for a few years and absolutely love. Agree with everything you said here, an unbeatable value for the money. I happen to really like the bracelet and clasp but agree that the "gap" is a letdown. The case shape has so many cool little details, and I love how it's smooth all over (versus sharp corners like you mentioned in your explorer vid). Thanks again for posting
My SARB was shipped from Japan and it arrived safely on the pillow in the box. I also got a SARZ005 from Japan and it was on the pillow securely as well. I may have been lucky though. If I was going to design my own SARB, I too would delete the lume. I'd also delete the date window and the minute hashes on the chapter ring. That to me would be the perfect Seiko.
I might just be unlucky, but my watches are always fallen off the pill and disheveled in the box. It's never caused any apparent problem but I worry when I'm placing an order if my new watch is getting shaken to death while in transit to me.
Un-Named Trucker the watch you described is my seiko SRP703J .. no lume ... simple indices, beautiful detailed watch face ... and 42mm size which suits me better. You should look into it!
I just bought one of these recently, and got it in the mail yesterday. I agree the whole pillow thing makes no sense, I think it was a good idea back in the day, but now, with so many people buying online, there does need to be something more secure. Getting a piece from an AD makes sense for the pillow, but probably not if you are ordering online. Other than that, the piece is nice, and I was pretty impressed with what you get for the price. Nice review!
I wrote a review on this, my daily wear to this day. Agree completely on the lume, they shouldn't have bothered. I agree on the clasp as well, all this time I've been using leather bands but having moved back to Tokyo the humidity here is too much so I'm back on the bracelet. Never having had a proper fit I tried a strapcode bracelet made for this watch and found it heavy and with painfully hard edges that I'd call sharp. The clasp is really the issue, as you say. Thanks for posting, it's a great review.
It's a minor point, but everything goes toward the overall "feel" of the watch, I LOVE the second hand on this watch. The whole watch is just so elegant.
Yeah, it seems to be... I like everything about it, I'm actually stunned that I don't own one... It just seems that when I get that feeling in the pit of my stomach, that "I gotta buy a watch... I gotta buy a watch...", there always seems to be something else I want more, hahah. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but my SKX007 was maybe the 4th Seiko I owned. Isn't that usually people's first foray into the brand ? I bought my yellow frankenmonster before my SKX...
Great review. You should consider wearing cotton gloves to handle the watch during the video so you don't have to keep wiping off the fingerprints. Others here on YT use the glove system and the watches look so glittering.
Nice detailed review here. I really like my SARB033. It's not my favorite watch, but for the price I think it does a lot right and feels and looks like a much nicer watch than it really is. Performance on it is really good for the price range too. Mine averages out around +4-6 seconds per day. That gap on the clasp finally got to me though and I swapped out for a nice black crocodile strap that looks nice.
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it. I might look into a leather strap for mine in the future as well. I like the bracelet, but yes the clasp isn't great, so your idea of a crocodile strap is a good one.
people say weird things about the cream dial too, like there's sunburst which i have yet to see. i love the lume on the 35 as i think it almost matches the dial. one of the best reviews on this watch i've seen thank you!
Great review this watch definitely hits above its weight class! The entry level/mid level $300-$600 range is somewhat of an awkward class due to the fact that these watches are not in the 'beater/don't care about it' category but not yet in the 'heirloom/pass down to your kids quality' A $60 Seiko 5 you can through away or play around with the movement when it breaks. A $4,000 Grand Seiko you care for and pass down through many generations. What do you do with a $400 Sarb when if needs service? Is a $700 Brightz worth the upgrade for better polishing and a better looking dial?
Thanks for the comment, and I totally agree, you hit the nail on the head. It is an awkward price point. Still a great watch, hopefully I get many years out of it before having to cross the bridge of what to do with it when it needs service.
A workaround for the lacking micro-adjust is to buy a 'bracelet extender' link for a couple of bucks on ebay. This goes between the clasp and the bracelet itself, doesn't look too bad and mine gives me four micro adjustment holes across just over the length of one link - guaranteeing a perfect fit.
JBF, just an FYI, those hands are actually dauphine style hands. Check out the SARG011 for what are sword style hands. It's a common mistake to make, virtually everyone that's done a review on this or the SARB035 calls them sword style hands.
Seiko SARB models are great watches.Seiko is a very impressive horological company.Definitely on par with any Swiss company. If win the lottery would love to own a Seiko Credor Fugaku.
JustBlueFish Top of line Seiko.Comparable to Patek Phiilipe,Vacheron constantin,etc...$250,000 & up in price.Works of art far beyond a Rolex. If win the lottery Ill be getting a Seiko Credor or Vacheron Constantin repeater.Till then am happy with my Seikos and Tissots.☺
Regarding the pillow and perceived lack of packaging if this is intended domestic market sale Seiko is probably not packaging it for world wide transport. Just guessing. Love this watch and appreciate your review.
Good point, they aren't meant for world wide distribution on these JDM models. That said the package is about the same on most of the entry level Seiko watches I've received.
4 links removed? Holy moly. What size are your wrists? I just got mine and couldn't even remove one link with my 7.5 in wrist. It was too tight. I had to rely on the single micro adjustment. Why oh why couldn't they put one more micro adjustment hole in there?!?!
Oyster style case, oyster style bracelet, 100 meters water resistant... It's a sports watch. It drives me nuts when people call this a dress watch. The Seiko SACM171 is a dress watch.
Yes they are Herve. EVERYONE calls them sword hands and it drives me bonkers. Google images of the SARG011. THEY'RE sword style hands. These are Dauphine.
Great review and new subscriber. Agree with the Sarb and Sarg line. I own and have owned many seikos. I wish they could get their act together when it comes to bracelets/bands on their $300 plus watches.
Mine came with a defective push button deployment mechanism. The clasp wouldn’t fold open when pressing the push buttons, or if it did it wasn’t a smooth easy release. Also, when pushed to close, the locking mechanism would make initial click and then another one when closing. Something seemed wrong off the bet and had to return it all the way back to Hong Kong. Such a hassle. Quality control not good at Seiko at all.
Seiko makes great watches... Most of the time. They're big downfall in these more affordable watches is the quality control. I've never heard of the issue you're having, I'm guessing you got unlucky and it's rare.
I just uploaded a video about it. Seems defective to me. I'm considering returning it, not sure if it's an easy fix, maybe others can comment ruclips.net/video/XfDJvkbu1As/видео.html
I don't have this particular watch, but I have an SNKL795 that has the same dial color quirk: Under bright light, it's kind of a chocolate brown instead of black.
I think I read another thread that said the "C" versions resolved the issues balance wheel issue on the A and B ones. The internet is full of jumping to conclusions and recorded assumptions that we read as fact. I'd ask a watch maker who knows Seiko automatics. Thinking about getting this watch, too.
Yeah definitely a lot of jumping to conclusions out there. I don't know the facts regarding this supposed issue, all my Seikos run fine, just sharing the info I've read.
Thanks for the review, it is perfect! I just dont understand talking so long about the fact that there are no cratches on the sapphire ... isnt it enough to say that you can only scrach it with a diamond?
There are two other minor differences between this and the SARB035. For one thing, the date wheel on the SARB035 is white while the dial is cream. That can annoy some people. Also I think the ends of the hands (where the lume stops) on the 033 are white down the middle, and they are black on the 035. This seems to have been done to improve legibility. The back is Hardlex. I can't imagine that it would present a problem, however.
I've never seen the Sarb035 in person, so I wasn't aware of those cosmetic differences. Thanks for pointing that out. And for clarification on the case back crystal. Maybe I can get a loaner 035 and do a comparison video one day.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Regarding your question about your watch, +14 seconds per day is within specs for the 6R15 movement. The acceptable accuracy range from the factory is between -15 to +25 seconds per day. So it’s nothing to get too alarmed over. That said I know the disappointment of having a watch running double digits fast or slow. Will it settle in? Honestly I doubt it. In my experience with a number of Seiko watches, the idea that they settle in is a myth. That’s just my opinion. I never see it happen. What do I suggest? Set the watch to an accurate known time source as exact as possible. I use the website Time.is for this. Then wear the watch 14 to 16 hours a day and keep track of how fast it is each day as exactly as possible. So at 9am every day check the time against the website and see what you get. After 2 weeks what we are looking for is consistency. Is it +14 all the time, or is it +10 some days and +18 others. If it’s consistently fast the same amount have it regulated and your problems will be solved. It’s easy to do I’ve done it myself on Seiko watches but you need a timegrapher to do it right. Take your time and evaluate it carefully, and you’ll get it figured out. In the end though, +14 per day isn’t terrible. You could set the watch a minute slow and after a few weeks when it’s a minute fast reset it. Not a big deal.
Will this watch fit a 5.5 inch wrist? When I look at the side of the links, it looks like I can remove as many links that I want until the watch fits my wrist, am I correct?
That was a poor review of one of the greatest watch for the price ever. So many "I'm not sure". If you're not then do your homework first. It's also strange because I saw a few of your later videos and overall your channel contains rather good quality content.
Hi man, big fan, I think you have the best reviews on RUclips. I recently decided to purchase the sarb033, but after seeing your review on the Hamilton Khaki Field 38 mm I fell madly in love with the Hamilton. I think there is something more special about it and has more personality, also it has that Rolex Explorer feel (maybe because of the elongated lugs) that I love, I know you were crazy about the Explorer as I am now. Anyway, since you have the both of them and if more people are interested in it, maybe you could do a comparison of the 2. I know one is a field watch (could be quite dressy on a leather) and the other one a dress watch, but they have similar dimensions, price points and kind of look like a Rolex explorer in their own way. So I was wondering from your perspective, how do they compare and which do you prefer ?
Just to be clear, so I'm sure I understand, you'd like a compare of the Hamilton Khaki Field and the Seiko SARB033? Unfortunately I don't have the SARB anymore. I sold it a while back along with several other watches when I was putting together money to purchase the Rolex. I had intended to replace it and get another SARB033 at some point, but it got discontinued! As they say, you snooze you lose. It's a shame, I do miss that watch.
Question for watch afficiandos. I recently tried some CK watches, yes Calvin Klein, yeah they're Swiss made. I was totally blown away by their fit and finish. I'm not talking about the movement, just the case and bracelet finishing, design n craftsmanship... Just immaculate, reminded me of my Sarx 033. Sure CK don't have sapphire crystal, but their domed glass looked a thing of beauty, no automatic movement n they're a fashion brand, but they're owned by Swatch and i was simply impressed by the finish of their watches. Would you advise me on picking one up over a possible Japanese watch? My main req is finesse and sharp quality of case n bracelet n crystal
My Casio costs $14.95 on Amazon. Waterproof, has a light, has dual times, has alarms, has countdown timer, and has not drifted more than 5 seconds from the Official US Naval Observatory Time since I bought it 9 months ago. And it doesn't scratch my laptop. These watch reviews are so gay.
Thanks for watching and for sharing this incredibly relevant comment, it’s value to the community will be celebrated by everyone who reads it for all times. You sir are a scholar and a gentleman, an absolute asset to humanity, and a true gem of a person. Your insight on the subject of horology is no less impressive then Einstein and the other great minds of our time. I’m humbled by your presence and can’t thank you enough for sharing with all of us your time and knowledge! Thank you my friend, thank you.
You should get a nice quartz dress watch for more formal events. Other than that the casio will do everything better than the mechanical toys these geeks drool over.
To me a watch is supposed to KEEP TIME, LOOK GOOD and have GOOD QUALITY BUILT. A quartz watch can look even better than an automatic since you can get the movement in a much slimmer case. Also they keep better time. If you want to wank over a gears and springs mechanism that your simple mind perceives as being "complex" or "intricate" then, by all means, don't let anyone tell you how to spend your money. If you want to look like a complete moron, go tell someone with a quartz Patek that his/her watch is a "shitter" and why.
I don't wear a watch as jewelry. Well, 99% of the time I don't. My day to day watch is a g-shock gwm5610-1, it's solar charging, syncs with atomic time and all that. I use it to tell the time and guess what, it's more accurate than my smartphone since it syncs every night. For formal ocasions I use one of my nicer looking watches (Seiko, Tissot). Also I own the watch in this video, to answer your first question. Mechanicals are fun, but in no way superior as a tool. And yes, I think of watches as mostly tools, I'm the kind of man who doesn't dig jewelry.
800mEric you are the one bullshitting here. I did NOT compare a 15$ quartz to an expensive mechanical piece. Let me rephrase: using the same quality materials on the glass, case, dial, strap/bracelet a quartz watch is a better watch at what a watch is supposed to do: keep f time and look good! How f hard can it be?
Am i the only person who watches reviews on watches they own?
Definitely not the only person.
I do it minutes after I ordered the watch..
Same here lol
Nope!
Big E here :-)
SARB033 & 035 : both discontinued (as is the 'alpinist').... I suspect Seiko 'realized' they were selling their 6R15 movement to cheaply, 'cause now this movement only seems to (re-)appear in Seiko watches twice or three times the price.
What do you think?
I’ve thought the same thing. Seiko is pushing the 4R into mid tier watches and moving the 6R up.
Probably
@Magister Ludi Same as 7s26 without hand winding.
I also think they stopped the “baby grand Seiko ” to get people to move toward grand Seiko
Yes, and the new (in 2019) SARY/Presage series watches are $400-$500 and come with the $50 NH35; same movement as in the Invicta Pro Diver.
I have the SARB035 (same watch, cream dial).
I bought it 13 months ago. It keeps great time.
I wear it with everything. I love it!
It's funny, because it's hard to stop looking at it in public.
Internet pictures do not do it justice.
By the way, well done on the video.
Thanks for watching enjoy the SARB.

I have the 035 and it runs about +8sec per day. It's a beautiful watch and extremely good value for money. I'd highly recommend it to anyone 👍
I had a debate with myself over which to get, the 033 or 035, both are excellent. Can't go wrong either way.
JustBlueFish - I do like the 033 but two of my other Seikos have black dials so I decided I'd go with the 035. Enjoy 👍
My SARB was shipped from Japan and it arrived safely on the pillow in the box. I also got a SARZ005 from Japan and it was on the pillow securely as well. I may have been lucky though. Un-Named Trucker the watch you described is my seiko SRP703J .. no lume ... simple indices, beautiful detailed watch face ... and 42mm size which suits me better. You should look into it!
This one is a "must have", no doubt.
Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching and for the comments. Enjoy your new SARB.
It has lume simply because it is not a dress watch but an all-rounder. A dress watch would not have had a bracelet as a standard but a leather band
Thanks for watching.
I agree this is more in line with the styling of the Air King
Thanks for the video I just picked up a new old stock one 👌
I wrote a review on this, my daily wear to this day. Agree completely on the lume, they shouldn't have bothered. Great review this watch definitely hits above its weight class!

Hello.
What's the difference between Sarb033 and Sarb033 spirit? Would like to know at the earliest as I'm about to make a purchase...
I think the markings are off because the markings are 1/5 whereas the beat is 1/6. Beautiful watch nonetheless

Looking at the tag, the SARB033 is not under the Presage line is it?
No I don't believe that it is.
Will this watch fit a 5.5 inch wrist? When I look at the side of the links, it looks like I can remove as many links that I want until the watch fits my wrist, am I correct?
Thanks for watching and yes you can remove links to size it to your wrist.
That was a poor review of one of the greatest watch for the price ever. So many "I'm not sure". If you're not then do your homework first. It's also strange because I saw a few of your later videos and overall your channel contains rather good quality content.
Haha sorry you didn’t like the video, but it is 2.5 years old. I don’t think it was bad, but let’s be fair, even TGVs early videos sucked.
@@JustBlueFish like I mentioned before, a present content of your channel hold it's value like Rolex GMT 16710 😜
A "brown hew" of the dial is evident even in your own video.
Thanks for watching.
What's your wrist size? , did you need to remove any links.
My wrist is roughly 7" and I pulled out 2 links to get a good fit.
Is spirit different from regular sarb033
no it's the same thing.
Someone who don't really appreciate watches. For automatic watch under 500 bucks. It's great. LOL
Definitely a great watch for the money.
Yeah, and there is no pillow protecting the crystal.
Where did you get the watch from?
For Seiko, I always buy from Amazon or LongIslandWatch.com depending on price and availability.
Can anyone tell me how much it costs go service the sarb033?
Question for watch afficiandos. I recently tried some CK watches, yes Calvin Klein, yeah they're
Swiss made.

Thanks for watching.
Seiko have thousand of model.
Great review. Thanks-
