I just turned 49 on May 3 and started my dread journey that day. I’m facing “you’re to old for dreads”. Next year I will be 50 and they will be 1. Old folk are still on their life journey.
First month having dreads and I’m loving it. Hardest thing I would say is the odd look from people every now and then but it’s nice because it supports the idea of being different which is what most people with dreadlocks cherish anyway 🤙🏼

I've only my dreads for 2 weeks now but I love them! I'm digging the messiness because I know that over time they'll look so much cooler! Also love your channel! very informative thank you
Thank you for keeping this real with us newbies. I am 24 hours in and look like 'Captain Caveman'. I love them, but will still need the support of a 'lock' family! Last night I dreamed I was sleeping on rocks!
I just started my journey into dreadlocks this past weekend. It's been interesting considering that I work in retail so I'm constantly working with people everyday. Definitely gotten my fair share of odd stares so far but it's not gonna discourage me!
Ive had a dreadhawk in the past that I did with a combination or twist and rip and crochet method. This time around I have a full head of hair and I made the dreads with only twist and rip. Im definitely more aware of how fluffy they are this time around! Considering pulling in some of those loose hairs with my crochet hook!
7 months old.. the thing that I had to move past was the loopy craziness. Great advice when you said to just ignore it! that's what I have been doing, separate and ignore. embrace the looks and keep smiling! :)
CaliSwag Scallywag dude I feel you. It's cold out now and every time I put on my jacket the hook side of the Velcro catches it and every time I go to scratch my head the sleeve Velcro catches it. I went to remove the already caught Velcro from my loc I get the second one caught. Now I have the cuffs rolled in so it don't happen.
I've been growing my hair for 2years now and next month i'll finally get myself dreadlocks!!! I just want to say a big thanks to you for giving me all the important information about dreadlocks via your videos :)
I'm six months into freeforming have plenty of nice tight locks on the back and sides of my head. Back are way more mature then the rest but I love them and love watching them form and change
I've just started some partial dreads and this video honestly helped me feel so much better about my dreads haha I was so insecure about how messy they are at the root. The actual dread themselves are ok and I'm ok with the little bit of loose hair but the roots look nuts when I have my hair up! So thanks for the reassurance! I'm gradually hyping myself up for making a new row!
Getting my new dreads tomorrow! Wish me luck... I am so grateful I just happened across your channel tonight... It will certainly help me in the weeks and months to come!
it took about a year and a half for me to be comfortable with how locked my dreads were. my hair is super soft and it took forever for my dreads to actually lock
I started the towel rub method, in August 2021, so that I could get a freeform style dread but I wanted to give them a little kick to urge them to lock up. Anyway after only two months I have a head full of locks. Yes they are young locks but they are locks none the less so they aren't pretty but they are there and getting tighter and better looking, daily, as well.
Awww man i struggled so much with the itchiness. i was going crazy. Almost cut my dreads off a few times but once i got through my first 12 Month's thing's got easier. If i would of found you from the beginning i think my itchy problems would have been easier. I found you a lil over a year ago, now thing's are completely going the right direction now. So Thank's a bunch to you
Ive been watching your videos for the last 2 years on and off an have been wanting to get dreads, now im sitting here FINALLY backcombing my hair while watching this!!!
I am on my second journey (almost 3 month) and the worst thing is that I started with short hair, so sometimes they stick up and look like nails on my head.
I've had partial Dreads (only the back of my head dreaded) for about 2 1/2 months now and have extensions. What was a really good surprise to me was that the drying of my dreads doesn't take long, they actually dry faster than my normal hair. The worst thing I still have to get used to is the management of washing partial dreads. The dreads themselves are not the problem, just that I have to wash my "normal" hair more often and thus seperate, and that it is so much more difficult to wash the normal hair. But I think partial dreads, although they're so much more difficult to handle, are the best option for anyone who isn't 100% sure if they can handle/want permanent dreads.
I used to have long dreads that were 3 years old. I cut them and found out I had a lot of sand in my hair from the beach. Now I'm starting over and will definitely take care of these locks better.
I've had my dreads for a year now and when I first made them I was actually surprised about how many problems I DIDN'T have! I washed my hair immediately after I finished them because I had spent four days making them and I couldn't stand it anymore. I also didn't use ties at the roots or ends. They didn't unravel when I washed them. And I've never had any problems with them coming loose. I wash them every other day with a baking soda solution and I'm really pleased with how that works. I shampoo the length once in a while with deep cleansing shampoo. They're really long, down to my butt (all my real hair) so sometimes there's some buildup of baking soda residue. But the only real annoyance I've experienced is having to separate the roots. Ripping my hair is like nails on a chalkboard!
I was wondering what your hair-type was before forming dreads: Did you used to have very dry hair that tangles easily and therefore it was easier for you to get dreads? My hair is very straight and shiny and I have to wash it every 2 days cause it gets oily. It doesn‘t easily tangle or form knots by itself. Would it be stupid for me to try and get Dreads?
@@4dvoc4tethe4byss6 It's straight, thick, kind of dry at the ends but but oily at the scalp so I can't go more than two days without a wash usually. My hair does tangle easily, but at the same time, clips always slide out. Go figure. I definitely wouldn't say it would be stupid for you to try to dread your hair. The method I used was a combination of twist and rip and backcombing. Twist and rip and inch or two, then use a metal (not plastic, it'll break) lice comb to go down the section you just did and pack those knots tight. You'd be amazed how much the section moves up and tightens with this method. I've done my dreads twice now with this method and have had no problems with unraveling. I also do maintenance with a crochet hook to pull in loose pieces.
@@4dvoc4tethe4byss6 Also, I no longer recommend washing dreads with baking soda. It got built up inside and dried them out really bad. Ruined my first set.
I agree,it's liberating but I have at times felt self conscious! Which I was not expecting at all!, Maybe it's cos their young and I have the typical fluff and loops etc
I've been wanting dreads for some while now. I have been watching your AWESOME informational videos for almost two years now, and I have finally started my own dreadlock journey. I prepped my scalp by washing it less for over a month, and even threw away my hairbrush and only started combing with my fingers. My hair is naturally curly and a frizzy mess but it never seemed to tangle... until I started putting in a few dreads on one side of my head. I'm now nine days in and nine dreadlocks in. I currently have to CONSTANTLY separate my natural hair from my dreads! Little sections of my natural hair that have tight curls are starting to dread at the roots. It's mildly frustrating because I'm constantly battling; I'm nervous if I just let the rest of my hair naturally dread up, I'll have oddly placed dreads and possible bald spots because of all my curly cowlicks I have! Question: Should I continue to separate and dread my natural hair? Or just allow it to take its course?! HELP!
people touching my hair!! seriously the weirdest thing to get used to. even if they ask first it's still awkward and they act like I'm rude if i tell them I'd rather them not touch me. i mean really...i don't go around petting "normal" hair...though sometimes i think i should just to make them feel weird when they touch my dreads!
I just started my dreads last night after wanting dreads like my whole life (im 17) and the hardest part for me was just doing the twist and rip method on my own hair because id say it took around 3 hours to do all my hair and i had to take breaks because my arms got so tired and my fingers hurt, but overall worth it, im excited to see how they develop as time passes, ive binge watched your videos and theyve been super helpful thank you so much
The first 6 months with new deadlocks are the hardest. But then again it is during this period you learn a lot about yourself along with humility and patients. With my first set of dreads. I found that that my tips would not lock up regardless of what I did. About 6 months in I added extensions and my tips connected well with them. So when I made my next set of dreads, which was about 8 months later I added the extensions to keep everything locked and to give some added length to be able to get my hair up and off my neck. Dreads and desert heat don't mix well together!
This is awesome…I have had my dreads a little over a year and still trying to get the rest of my extensions in. You have reassured me about the messiness. I was freaking put but you have helped me ease that and I thank you
So happy I found this page!!! I just started my locks about a week ago and I had all these questions. I'm going to just binge watch everything on here and if i have questions ill just link you but just wanted too give a shutout/thank you .
2 days in and I love my crazy dreads! Twist n rip method and started with 6 inches of length at most. They are hella frizzy though and some of my peers are trying to get me to brush them out! Locked for life though! I’ll have my dreams for ever!! I’ve been doing research for over a year and I’m committed
In my 8th month now. When I started my hair was all the way down to my hips and now it's around my collarbone. I only have like 23 to 25 dreads so they are very thick. I've always had to actually fight my hair from dreading (multiple uses of conditioner in a single wash + having to comb my hair with conditioner still in it) so they have matured at a rapid pace :D finally letting my hair do what it's always wanted and it's awesome!
You my man are an angel 😇 Love the enthusiasm and directness 👌🏽. My head is sooooooo itchy haha! I knew it was coming but this is insane. So grateful of your videos that I'm working my way through.
I know you made alot of these videos along time ago. this one I keep when I get frustrated for encouragement. I'm a month in, thank you for your videos. very helpful!. I did not go to a salon. I done hr and hrs of research and done them my self. yours were the most helpful
I was 2 months into my journey and applied to one of the better restaurants in town. I applied for a serving position but got hired as a pantry cook. I was the first "Dready" to work there, and now we have 3. Still there 3 years later. It can happen and good luck.
hi! I'm about 2 weeks in with mine, feeling a bit messy! I just wanted to let you know that your videos have been extremely helpful! I've learned alot about the dread life! thank you!
i actually put 3 of my dreadlocks in today! they look pretty good so far given that i had been using the crochet method. i wasnt expecting them to turn out looking like dreads in the beginning
I'm on day 6 and I wash them more often and palmroll a lot and mine are forming great. I also spray with a sea salt and tea tree oil and have several essential oil sprays that help with the scalp itchyness. Im in love but my hair is curly and my new locs are wavy and curly at the ends
Dude thank you so much for this information. I've watched a fair few videos and you've answered so much already. I look forward to watching a few more as I'm going to be a very young dreadhead very soon. Love you bro ty again 💚
Been watching your vids to prepare myself for when i get my dreads, ive been waiting and waiting for the "right time" to get them, when I realised that there is no right time, so Ive spent the last 2 days doing my dreads :D I just finished them and Im super excited for my dread journey!
At 1 month and I decided to do my locs myself so they are different sizes. Lol I did end up using wax 😔 after the first few days because there were so much lose hair and fluffy not really looking like dreadlocks. Washed at the 2 week mark and wax didn't all come out and only used water. Thank you for sharing your journey so I can learn more about taking care of my dreadlocks.
I am only 1 week into my Dread Journey and so far so good. My hair was waist length and I lost about 4 inches. LOL! To the "how long it takes them to dry... my hair is super thick, large curly and fine in texture. B.D. (before dreadlocks) it could take up to 12 hours for my hair to dry to the roots. Now, it only takes about 2 hours. I guess the matting, right now, affords the air to waft through... Dunno' just loving them.
love you dude , you're so relaxing and you make dreadlock journey not so nerve wracking lol subscribed and I don't even have dreads.. Living vicariously!
mine are 2 days old and I noticed some sections refused to dread like i could twist and ripped and backcombed as much as I wanted to and it didn't help at all so i just did my best or ended up braiding it. But also i find myself being a lot more cautious with putting flowers in my hair cause i love doing that but now i gotta check for bugs more than I normally would. I have gotten strange looks and im starting school in September so they are barley gonna be a month old so it will be interesting to see what people say or how the look cause i have not seen one other person in the whole school with dreads but all in all im so happy i did it and cant wait to see how they turn out in a year from now 💕
I've had a full hard for about 3 days and I think the only thing that I didn't really look into before starting was how messy they look as fresh dreads. Just all the little fly aways. I think other than that I had prepared a Lil bit and was used to having an irritated scalp anyway so it's not too different. Im prepared for all the looks and people assuming they know better but frankly I don't care im sooo happy I love them.
I've had my dreadlocks for 5 months now and I find its hard not to reach for the crochet hook. I realised I was using it too much from research so I've completely stopped. Therefore I'm now dealing with massive amounts of loose hair and messiness. It's hard but I know in the months and years to come it will all be worth it in the end.
I started my dreads by myself a few days ago and so far I’ve had no problems. I love the feelings so far, I love the look (knowing that they’re supposed to look like they do) and there’s been no pain! I’m getting nervous however... it’s too good to be true
Wassup man, how has your journey been so far? I did mine 2 weeks ago, I've already washed them once, but I'm afraid that some of them are washing out (2 of them are really really small but I'd say 2-3 inches long and I have really straight and soft hair). My roots on the back of my head are straight hair too (too much compared to the front ones, 1 inch of straight hair) should I worry?
Realy usefull vid. Made my dreadz about a week ago . My dreads are little ones like 1inch 2 inch , i have little ichienes , found out that making dreads with long hair can increase the scalp pain .
My baby dreads were thin, long and easy to work with. I'm 8 months in and they are fat and short. I lost half of my length and have dreads that are 3x the thickness. That surprised me. I was also surprised at how readily the dreads formed, especially advancing after swimming.
My dreads are pretty young still. I've had them for a couple weeks now and people are giving me such negative comments. telling me that dreads can't be washed, "I want to take a comb or hair clippers to your head", " you'll never get a job. or don't you want a job?" and so much more. It gets on my nerves and nobody listens to what I have to say when I try to tell them the facts about dreadlocks because apparently "they know better". it's frustrating
I used dread extensions which added alot of length to my dreads, considering how short they originally were. For me, what I found the hardest to get used to was sleeping with them. Even with having them wrapped up. And of course getting my scalp used to the weight difference of each dread
I just started my journey for the second time on July 14th of this year! My hair is definitely getting nappy and I'm pretty excited so far. My hair is pretty short, maybe like 5 inches or so, but I have curly/wavy hair and they are heavily damaged with bleach so it's sectioning and dreading pretty quickly. I am doing a neglect method, and whenever they do try to merge, I'll be separating them. Because of job situation, I'm trying to keep my hair looking neat as possible. I'll say that's my only difficulty I'm facing so far.
I got my full head of dreads 2 weeks ago now, everyone seems to think I can't shower. It's hilarious! Honestly loving all the questions I'm getting though! So many people are so interested, it awesome!
haha, that will never go away. A month or so ago my boss and I were working on a job site and the elderly hippie lady homeowner was fascinated with them and asking me all sorts of questions, when she asked about how I wash them my boss interrupted and said "HE DOESN'T!". I just blankly stared at him and asked him "How bad do you think I would smell if I haven't washed my hair every damn day in these last 3 years we've been working together?" The lady laughed her ass off and we went back to talking. lol
I reached 4 years last week. Since I live in the 'murder capital' of England, the comments I've had over the years have been awful, but you just have to stick it out :p
2 week old dreads! I love them but the frizz is the hardest to maintain for me. Had itchy/sore scalp for a few days but it's gotten much better already.
And wanting dreadlocks for about 3 years now my dreadlocks or two weeks old only started half the head but love it so much my next day off I'm going for the full (of what hair i have lol ) i I think the only crazy I get is the frizzy I just do a lot of palm rolling and crochet hooking and I always sleep with something over my hair love love love love your videos
Over a month for me: The one thing that has set me back was that I decided to dye my hair from platinum blonde to dark brown a couple weeks prior to starting my dreads. I thought that it would be much easier to dye my hair while it was loose instead of waiting until they were mature and locked. Little did I know, that this would make it much harder to lock. I was washing my hair only once a week and had not given my newly dyed hair a good wash from the residue of all the dye that was still standing in my hair. This led to quite a bit of "loosing" on my top layers of dreads. But I can see a big difference it has made of getting rid of the dye residue that had prevented my dreads from, well you know, LOCKING 😏
Hey, I think I will get some dreads this summer. Already have two, one done by my friends, one done by myself. Probably I will get a scarf before getting more dreads to hide the fuzzy hair.
Ok ne week just starting after 2 years without dreads and now I'm on it again so I just loved them, nothing to apply, they were messy but so lovely and cute 😊😊😊 I'm so excited
My dreads are one day old! I was wondering if you could do a video of palm rolling, and is it necessary in the beginning stages. If you have already done a video on it my apologies. You're awesome and thanks for all the great dread advice!
This is the first time i have dreads and after i saw one of your videose, i was totally relaxed and not worried at all. i just let my dreads do what they want to do :) thx for your advice!!
My dreads are approx 2months young. I'd say what I didn't expect is that they have eaten themselves. I started with shoulder length hair and used twist and rip. I started to get lumps and bumps after a month. Then the lumps in the middle decided to make 90degree angles. Which then folded in half and got sucked into their dread and tightened from there. So now half of my dreads are approx 3 inches. They are tight, tiny ball like things!! I don't do maintenance besides separating. Im not necessarily freaking out but going from 8-12inches to 2-3 inches in 2 months was definitely a shock. I use Dollylocks shampoo and wash my hair every other day. I know that seems like a lot but it is summer and I work out so I sweat a lot. I think getting wet and drying so much has helped them draw up so much. Plus I don't do anything to protect them when I sleep. I have had zero itching, or dandruff. I HOPE this is okay. I'm going to continue to believe that this is a good thing and let them be. It's about the journey as much as the destination. Your channel/social networks rock! @lazydreads! Thank you for all the help from the Dread Community. I also have a special needs son and appreciate your work with the Special Olympics.
hey keep up the good work I tried starting my locs this month and found that because I washed my hair everyday before locking that my hair got way greasy way fast and my locks wouldn't stay and thanks to you I found out what I need to do so that I can restart my locs
It's all these dang flyaways!!! I saw in another one of your videos that it might be best to just not crochet them in the first few days/weeks and my dreads are only a couple of days old.
I done my dreads 2 months ago now, an am only now starting to notice a change in them, majority of my mates are rope heads. One big family we are 😂 they like to kid about how they look but give me heaps of advice as well as your videos have helped 👌

I went to remove the already caught Velcro from my loc I get the second one caught. Now I have the cuffs rolled in so it don't happen.
Trueeeee
Well done for preserves ring! How are they now? I'm reserching loads.. I just feel I should have them just got to start my Journey xx
Damn your channel is a lifesaver. I started my young dreads yesterday and these tips gained me some confidence and reduced stress by a lot.
So Thank's a bunch to you
I have a bad internet connection right now so this is the first time I read the transcript in the description. Thumbs up for that!
Ive been watching your videos for the last 2 years on and off an have been wanting to get dreads, now im sitting here FINALLY backcombing my hair while watching this!!!
I'm a week and a half in my dreads and this video reassured me of my worries and questions
I am on my second journey (almost 3 month) and the worst thing is that I started with short hair, so sometimes they stick up and look like nails on my head.
Drokas me too lol the struggle
😂😂😂😂hush
Thank you for reassuring me that I'm not the only one putting up with others looks & comments!
my dreads are at 7 1/2 months old. The hardest/best part of having dreads was everyone seeing that im not afraid to be unique
Right! I'm learning more about dreads and I'm planning on getting them soon!
I agree,it's liberating but I have at times felt self conscious! Which I was not expecting at all!, Maybe it's cos their young and I have the typical fluff and loops etc
Best decision I ever made. I'm loving seeing how each one is taking shape :)
HELP!
Thank you! It's good to hear from someone who has been there
people touching my hair!! seriously the weirdest thing to get used to. even if they ask first it's still awkward and they act like I'm rude if i tell them I'd rather them not touch me. i mean really...i don't go around petting "normal" hair...though sometimes i think i should just to make them feel weird when they touch my dreads!
Day two of having dreads!
How has the journey been?
Day 2 for me kinda flat but not too much and tbh I’m kinda loving it
2 days in for me
You got bad ass dreads dude
I JUST finished twist and rip method and my hair looks INSANE! but I love it!!!!
You my man are an angel 😇 Love the enthusiasm and directness 👌🏽. My head is sooooooo itchy haha! I knew it was coming but this is insane. So grateful of your videos that I'm working my way through.
Just got new dreads yesterday, so thank you for all the great info! Looking forward to the years to come with the maturing process. :)
I’m already a goth and I’ve worn synthetic ones plenty of times I think I’m ready to be started at XD
I'm scared I'm gonna pay all this money to get dreads and then they are gonna fall out 😂
Same. I'm getting dreads on the 3rd of July.
Dunno' just loving them.
started mine 4months ago frizz, looping the lot! bring it on. 52years young and still locking 3rd time around. doh!
I love your videos. Glad I found you. I am a newb and the hardest part is my scalp feels dirty and flaking.
I have new dreads and i’m in school I itch all class so everyone asks me if I have lice I always have to explain dreadlocks to everyone
love you dude , you're so relaxing and you make dreadlock journey not so nerve wracking lol subscribed and I don't even have dreads.. Living vicariously!
you are my fave, I'm back at the beginning after my 4 month removal but it helps after having freeform dreads for 18 months
mine are 2 days old and I noticed some sections refused to dread like i could twist and ripped and backcombed as much as I wanted to and it didn't help at all so i just did my best or ended up braiding it. But also i find myself being a lot more cautious with putting flowers in my hair cause i love doing that but now i gotta check for bugs more than I normally would. I have gotten strange looks and im starting school in September so they are barley gonna be a month old so it will be interesting to see what people say or how the look cause i have not seen one other person in the whole school with dreads but all in all im so happy i did it and cant wait to see how they turn out in a year from now 💕
i'm freshly new to dreads. my second week.
and i just look like a palm tree with alot of messy hair.
can't wait till they really lock !
2 weeks right here, honestly I really enjoy having messy dreadlocks, and I really enjoy croche hooking them ( I spelled that wrong I know)
I've had a full hard for about 3 days and I think the only thing that I didn't really look into before starting was how messy they look as fresh dreads.
7 days today!
A little bit ITCHY!
But coming around. I'm really looking forward to the journey!
My baby dreads were thin, long and easy to work with. I'm 8 months in and they are fat and short. I lost half of my length and have dreads that are 3x the thickness. That surprised me. I was also surprised at how readily the dreads formed, especially advancing after swimming.
What about sleeping with new dreads? I feel like when I sleep they just keep getting looser and looser
Had my dreads twisted up 2 days ago, your videos are helpful man Defo.
1 month with a lot of compliments and a lot of people saying "nice braids" I went with the twist and pull technique...
I just blankly stared at him and asked him "How bad do you think I would smell if I haven't washed my hair every damn day in these last 3 years we've been working together?" The lady laughed her ass off and we went back to talking. lol
Just had my dreads done and they are pretty short so I'm rocking the side show bob look🤣 I am loving the looks I've been getting haha
I reached 4 years last week. Since I live in the 'murder capital' of England, the comments I've had over the years have been awful, but you just have to stick it out :p
Good advice as usual. Your locs are looking tops! Cheers
